LaFayette Witherspoon Obituary
Born July 9, 1940 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Leonard Witherspoon and Magdelene Witherspoon.
Educated in the public schools of Rowan County, he attended Dunbar High School and retired as a self-employed brick mason. Early in life, Mr. Witherspoon was also a boxer.
Mr. Witherspoon was an avid gardener who enjoyed being outside cutting his grass, trimming trees and shrubs and planting flowers.
Those left to forever cherish his memories are his wife, Betty Jean Massey Witherspoon; children, Satalia Jefferson (Stanley) of Arizona, Johnna Massey of Maryland, Lafayette Witherspoon, Jr. and Jeffery Witherspoon (Yvette) both of Maryland; sister, Barbara Gillespie; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Arrangements: Services are Wednesday, August 21, 2024 in the A.R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Inc. with Visitation at 10:30 am and Funeral at 11:00 am. Interment following services at Rowan Memorial Park. Minister Donnie Witherspoon, Eulogist.

Former Mason Tender at Long Masonry, 7639 Fullerton Road, Springfield, Va. Some of the crew called him "spoon". We worked at Severn/Ft. Meade and Columbia, Md. job sites with many the guys young and old. The bricklayers kept us busy. My brother Lewis knew "spoon" too. I last saw him in 1999 at an Exxon station on Charles Street in Baltimore while filling my car. He was always a pleasure to work with as was the other crew members. I remember telling him I was a 1976 Mervo graduate and he told me he lived close. May God bless all and give you peace.
