Martha Raper Obituary

Martha Hall Raper

SALISBURY - Martha Elizabeth Hall Raper, age 61, of Salisbury, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

She was born July 20, 1946 in Winston-Salem, the eldest daughter of Mary Catherine Cheek Hall and the late Dr. J. Cullen Hall of Salisbury. Mrs. Raper attended Boyden High School, Mars Hill College and Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Winston-Salem. She retired from Rowan Memorial Hospital as Head Nurse of the Coronary Care floor.

Mrs. Raper was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Salisbury, where she was a founding member of the Adam and Eve Sunday School Class, as well as a member of the Adult Chancel Choir.

She was a member of Salisbury Jaycettes, on the Executive Committee of Salisbury After 5 Club and belonged to the local Multiple Sclerosis Support Group. After moving to the Lutheran Home, she continued a personal ministry of encouragement for other residents.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Earl Raper Jr.; mother Catherine Hall; sister Patricia Sue Hall Lumpkin of Raleigh; brothers Joseph Cullen Hall, Jr. and wife Pamela Rhyne of Salisbury and William Leslie Hall and wife Carol Flynn of Durham; eight nieces; and two nephews.

Services: A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. February 10 at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Stephen D. Haines will officiate the service.

Visitation: Friends are invited to visit with the family following the service in the First United Methodist Fellowship Hall.

Ms. Hall,

Wanted to let you know our prayers are with you on the Home going of Martha. I went to school with Martha and I visited her with you when you showed my husband and myself around Trinity Oaks. What a comfort to know that she is not suffering now but at home with Jesus.

Dearest Ray and Ms. Hall,

I am so sorry for your loss and happy for Heaven's gain. My best times during my 26 months at the Lutheran Home were getting Marty to giggle. She was always happy when I visited and especially when Gracie licked her face. She was crazy about that puppy. And, I was crazy about Marty! God bless each of you.

To The Raper and Hall families:
Marty was a delightful person, never complaing but all ways thinking of others. I'm grateful our paths crossed as nurses at RMH.
She was a great example of what nursing is about.

The Raper family:May God bless you at this difficult time. I worked with Marty in 1975. I was her unit secretary on the old 1-north unit at Rowan Memorial Hospital. We had so much fun working on that little unit. I was working with her when she was diagnosed with MS. She was always such a strong person. My prayers are with you and your family

Marty was the symbol of bravery and inspiration. She helped many people by just being herself. Heaven has a new angel.
