Newmoon Jung Obituary

Newmoon N. Jung, Sr., age 89, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at Carolinas Healthcare System- Main, Charlotte, NC after several years of declining health. He was born November 10, 1926 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of the late Daniel and Ine Lee Jung. He graduated from J.W. Cannon High School in 1944. He played 2 years in junior football and 2 ½ years in varsity football. At school he also found time to be Monogram Club secretary, Quill and Scroll President, Beta Hi-Y President, Assistant Editor and staff photographer for the “Cannon Report,” and the 1944 class reunion chairman for 57 consecutive years. He married Virginia D. Wright on September 12, 1947 who died in November 2014 after 67 years of marriage. Newmoon was owner/operator of the Kannapolis Laundry until 1961. From 1961 to 1985 he operated the Buyers Market, a combined furniture, carpet, and appliance store. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II and served on the liberty ship U.S.S. Felix Grundy. Newmoon was an active member of the Beaver-Pittman American Legion Post 115 where he had served as past Commander, named N.C. Post Commander of the Year for 2006-2007, membership chairman, publicity chairman, and program chairman for 15 consecutive years, 2 nd vice-commander, 1 st vice-president, and commander. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC where he had served as a past secretary and substitute teacher for the young adult Sunday school class, and past athletic officer, coach, and player for fast pitch softball church league. Newmoon was named one of ten heroes of Kannapolis in March 2006. He also help recruit WWII veterans and in other ways for the Spirit of '45 Celebration held at the Embassy Suites in Concord, NC on August 28, 2016. Newmoon was active for many years with the Boy Scouts of America where he had served as a patrol leader, senior patrol leader, den chief, was a 2 year counselor at Camp Cabarrus, vice- president of the Order of the Arrow organization in scouting. As an adult he also served 3 years as Neighborhood Commissioner. He found time to serve as a camp counselor at the former Camp Elliott during summer camp. Among his many civic interests included Past Division Chairman for Community Funds, Past Division Chairman for the United Way, Past City Chairman for the Red Cross, Past City Chairman for the N.C. Heart Association, and the first person from Kannapolis to serve as their county president. He later received the N.C. Heart Association “Founders Award.” He was charter president of the Towel City Lions Club for 1 ½ years where he served as secretary for 5 years, treasurer for 14 years, and re-elected president. He also served Lions International as Zone chairman and district chairman and the first full time District 31-E Chairman for the N.C. Eye Bank. He received awards like the Lion of the Year, Lions International Key Award, Master Key Master, Extension Award, and N.C. State Eye Bank Award. He was a charter member of the United Commercial Travelers and a past NASCAR scorer. He was awarded the Order of the Long-Leaf Pine on September 27, 2016 by Governor Pat McCrory. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Wright Jung; a sister, Mazelle Lee; and two brothers, Walker Jung and Lincoln Jung. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Don Davis. Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum, Kannapolis, NC with military rites conducted by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of a son, Tim Jung, 2610 Lamp Post Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081 during the interim. Survivors include his three sons, Newmoon N. Jung, Jr. (Juney) & wife, Karen; Danny L. Jung & wife, Judy; and Tim D. Jung & wife, Jane; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dr. James M. Jung from Buies Creek, NC and Kineson Jung of Ft. Walton Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to American Legion Post Beaver-Pittman Post 115, P.O. Box 123, Kannapolis, NC 28082. On-line condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com.
