Sally Ann Weathers Morgan, 77, of Mount Ulla, N.C., passed away on November 7 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.
Sally was born on July 17, 1948, to James Fulton Weathers and Mary Ruth Lowder Weathers in Spartanburg, S.C. Sally is preceded in death by her parents as well as her siblings, “Jimmy” Weathers, Judy Weathers, and “Ricky” Weathers. She moved to Salisbury, N.C., in 1962 and graduated from Boyen High School in 1966. She studied psychology at Catawba College, where she made the Dean's List.
Sally helped at her Aunt Frances's Beauty Shop as a girl and eventually took over the shop. She retired from her self-run Sally's Beauty Shop in April of 2019. She kept her customers smiling and laughing with her sparkling personality, Lance crackers, and Coca-Cola. Everyone who went in the Beauty Shop came out looking and feeling better. She always left everything better than she found it.
In June 1967, Sally met her lifelong love and friend, Don Robert Morgan, in Downtown Salisbury. Sally and Don were married on April 5, 1969. They had two children, Deborah Suzanne Morgan and Robert Alan Morgan, and three grandchildren, Savannah Nicole Morgan, Katherine “Gracie” Morgan, and Wyatt Alan Morgan. Sally was “Mama” and “Granny” to every friend of her children and grandchildren. She never wanted anyone to go hungry and would offer to whip something up for anyone who set foot in her kitchen.
Sally was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and was chair of the Social Ministry Committee. She loved organizing and running Meals on Wheels. She would chat with all the meal recipients when she made deliveries. She also helped organize the church's Christmas in the Mountains Ministry. She bought, wrapped, and delivered countless gifts for children and families in Ashe County, N.C. She was always helping out in the church kitchen, bringing meals, desserts, and sweet tea to any church event. She taught Sunday School for many years and loved sharing knowledge and love with children. She volunteered at the church up until the last moments of her life.
Sally loved gardening. She grew up as a city girl but quickly learned how to plant and prepare any vegetable after she met Don. She canned and froze countless vegetables from the garden. She loved making pumpkin pies and strawberry custards, vegetable soup, tomato juice, and even fruit preserves.
Sally started every day with a cup of coffee and a cigarette on her back porch. She enjoyed watching the birds, especially hummingbirds. She kept her hummingbird feeders full with homemade hummingbird food, and she would talk to the birds that flitted around her. She could chat with anyone and always had a story to share.
Sally worked her whole life to ensure everyone around her was taken care of. She surrounded her family and friends with so much love. Sally was hairspray and cigarette smoke on the porch and warm plates of food. She was sweat and red dirt in the garden and hard work. But most of all she was love and kindness. She took care of everyone, people and animals, and she is greatly missed by the family dog, Gus.
We will all miss our Granny so, so much, but we are grateful for the time we had with her. We will cherish our memories with her and share stories about her life. We will remember everything she taught us and continue holding and feeling her love.
The family will receive friends and family at St. Luke's Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Bear Poplar, N.C., at 1 p.m. Friday, November 14. The memorial service will follow in the Sanctuary at 3 p.m., and the family will receive a meal after.
Donations can be made in Sally's memory to Meals on Wheels Rowan or St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
