Alan Holyoak Obituary

Alan Bruce Holyoak 1929 ~ 2006 "The Music Man" Alan Bruce Holyoak, 76, passed away at his home in Sandy, Utah Wednesday, March 15, 2006. He was born in Burley, Idaho November 13, 1929 to Albern Lovell Holyoak and Anne Lenore Lewis. He married Jeanine Myers May 9, 1952 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Alan loved people and music. Both dominated his activities throughout his life. He attended schools in Burley, Idaho and graduated from Burley High School. He then went to the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho when he was called to serve an LDS mission in the North Central States Mission (Minnesota, North Dakota, Eastern Montana and Wisconsin). Handwritten on his mission call, he was instructed to bring his saxophone with him to the mission. When he arrived at the mission home, he was informed that he would be part of the Mormonaires Dance Band, which toured throughout the mission playing for junior and senior proms and various community programs. He served with the Mormonaires for two years, whereupon his mission was extended for another six months. When he came home, he went to Brigham Young University where he received a B.A. degree in Music. While at BYU, he also met his future wife. They were married six weeks after they met and spent 54 happy years together. They were blessed with six children, all of whom graduated from Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City, were married in the Temple, and have blessed them with 32 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, among them, 10 served or are still serving honorable missions for the LDS Church. After receiving his degree in music, he worked a short time with his father on the farm in Idaho. Then he accepted a position in Sugar City, Idaho as the band and chorus teacher at Sugar City High School and taught there for two years. Alan then moved his family to Grantsville, Utah where he taught band and chorus for three years at Grantsville High School. During that time, he started the marching band program, which received the honor of being at the head of the Days of '47 parade in Salt Lake City. From Grantsville, he went to Northwest Junior High in Rose Park and taught there for two years. He then moved to Salt Lake area and taught for various schools in the Brighton area of Jordan School District-Elementary as well as Junior and Middle schools. He taught both music and mathematics for years at Eastmont Middle School, where he retired in 1991. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many church capacities, such as Sunday School and Priesthood instructor, chorister and choir director, several priesthood leadership positions, a bishopric member, and a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple until the time of his death. He and his wife also served a mission as temple workers in the Los Angeles Temple from 1999 until 2003. Alan set an example for us always busy in the service of others. He rarely complained or became upset, and was a great example of kindness, charity, and integrity. He is survived by his wife, Jean; children, Carla (Kay) Cook of Sandy, Mark (Jana) of Sandy, Scott (Tracie) of Tomball TX, Lisa (Jim) Wyciskalla, Doug (Charisse) of Cortland IL, and Brad (Jean) of Providence UT; siblings, Merrill (Bobbie) of American Falls, ID, Richard (Nola) of Burley, ID, Loren (Linda) of Burley, ID, and Laura Lee (Richard) Vorwaller of Burley, ID. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jared Cook; and daughter-in-law, Tina Holyoak (Brad). Funeral services will be held Monday, March 20th, 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Buttercup Chapel, 1600 East Buttercup Drive (10075 South) in Sandy. A viewing will be held at the same location Sunday evening March 19th from 6 to 8 p.m. and immediately preceding the funeral at 10 a.m. Interment will be at the Mountain View Memorial Estates, 3115 East 7800 South.

Dear Aunt Jean and family,

I was sad to hear about the death of Uncle Alan. I remember as a child, the family get togethers we had, and how much I enjoyed those times. Alan was always a great person. He loved and was interested in the welfare of his nieces and nephews. My best wishes to you and your family.

Sincerely,Tim Holyoak

So sorry to hear of the loss of your husband and Dad. It's been a long time since we were acquainted, but I used to live in the second house down the street from you in Sugar City in the "olden days." I especially remember you, Jean, because I wore your wedding veil at my wedding!
