Alice Packard Obituary

Alice Earl Packard 1932 ~ 2008 Alice Earl Packard passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband and children on June 5, 2008. Alice was born July 9, 1932 to Kenneth Owen Earl and Vertie Ann Leavitt Earl in Bunkerville, NV. She married Floyd L. Packard on Feb 8, 1951 in the Idaho Falls Temple, thus beginning their eternal journey together. Alice dedicated her life to her husband, her 14 children, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She and her husband settled in Carlsbad, California for 49 years where they raised all their children. She loved her country and was influential in all five of her sons earning their Eagle Scout Award. Alice loved music and passed this love on to her family. Her compassion and determination helped her successfully raise her large family. She possessed a beautiful smile and refreshing laugh, which always brought a twinkle to her eyes. She was a quiet pillar of strength and support to her husband as he served in many positions in the Church. Together, she and her husband presided over the Florida Tallahassee Mission from 1984-1987, served as the first president and matron of the San Diego, CA Temple from 1993-1995, and served a couples' mission to the Washington D.C. Visitor Center from 2001-2003. Floyd and Alice recently moved to Highland, Utah where she continued to strengthen her family. Alice is survived by her husband of 57 years; her 14 children; her 101 grandchildren; 41 great-grand children; and many friends. She will be deeply missed! Her family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses for their kindness and exceptional care. A public viewing for family and friends will be held Monday, June 9th from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Anderson & Sons Mortuary, 49 E 100 N, American Fork. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Highland South Stake Center, 9600 N 6800 W. A family viewing will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Perpetual Education Fund.

What lovely tributes to a lovely lady. So sorry to hear of Alice's passing. You Packards left a grand legacy of goodness, energy, and service in the Tallahassee area. What a treat it was to find you in Washington, DC a few years ago! Much love to your family from those of us blessed to have known you.

Dear President Packard and family,
My heart goes out to you at this time of sadness. Having just lost another older brother I have a glimpse of the emptyness created in your lives. Family times will be bittersweet for a while. We do have the knowledge of knowing we can be together for eternity and I have no doubt that will be the case in this instance. As a young person growing up in the branch then ward we learned much from both Floyd and Alice. This part of the vineyard was blessed indeed to have had Alice as the ward and stake mother. Much love to all of you.

My thoughts and prayers go out to President Packard and the his family in the loss of their wife and mother. President and Sister Packard were truly role models to us during our many years, as Marine assignments dictated, in the Carlsbad Stake, from 1955 to 1978.

Dear
Preident Packard & family, Our deepest sympathy to all of you. You
helped me & my family so much from the time we started coming to
church & I joined the church. At times it wasn't easy but you were
always there for me. We have so many memories, 47 years worth of them.
We are very grateful for Project Temple that Floyd & Alice were our
sponsors and because of that we were able to go to the Temple
and were sealed. Except for our son Bob who was 20 yaers old at that
time.We will do his temple work for him next year as he just passed
away.
I can still name all of the children with special thoughts of each of
them. Besides all of the things others have said about Alice, the
sparkle in her eyes, her love of the Savior & the gospel, Her love
of her husband & family, I think of how she was always so practical
in her ways of doing things.
We know there was great rejoicing in heaven when "Sweet Alice" was coming home.
We love all of you so very much and have missed Alice & Floyd since
they moved to Utah. We hope to live our lives so that we might be able to meet her again.
Love you all

What a fabulous lady! What I remember most about her was her capacity to work and her ability to make work fun. As a boy, when I would go over to the Packard home to play with David, Sister Packard would usually put me to work weeding the garden or helping clean the kitchen. (Of course, I also enjoyed eating the yummy meals before we cleaned the kitchen!) To this day, when I decide that I need to get some work done in a hurry, I tell my family that I'm shifting into "Alice mode". Thanks to her, I also feel quite comfortable putting my children's friends to work when they come over. Sister Packard and her exemplary family have had a tremendous impact on my life.

President Packard, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this sad time. We have always loved and respected you and Alice, ever since we first met you in 1957 in the old Oceanside Branch. All those years in Oceanside mean a lot to our family. We have great memories. Alice always made our children feel so welcome at your home. She is a wonderful lady, and we shall miss knowing that she is in this world with us.

My dear and special cousin Floyd,

You can't know how hard I tried to locate the Stake Center this morning. My disappointment can't be measured because I had looked forward to seeing you, your many children and others of our family whom I had not seen for so many years. Please know how much we love and admire you. The Lord's special love and comfort be with you always.

Dear President Floyd L. Packard and Family,
My Family (Robert H.L. and June Feldt) wishes to offer our prayers and condolences to all of you at this time of your loss and passing of Sister Alice Packard, a GREAT FRIEND, Neighbor, Teacher and an AWESOME example. Sister Alice Packard was an excellant example of Love, Service, Support and Hard work as I was growing up, she also had a fantastic sense of humor. I always enjoyed listening to her strong testimony of the Lord, the blessings she received by participating in his work, not just as a mother but also with the many opportunities of service. May Heavenly Father Bless You with His Comforting Love, grateful that we have the knowledge that we will see and be reunited with her once again!!!
With Love and Appreciation,

Dear President Packard and Family,

Our hearts are with you as you say goodbye to your lovely wife and mother.

A few years ago, Scott and I were visiting the ward in Carlsbad with our new baby, Julia. Sister Packard asked me what number she was and I proudly said "Seven!" She smiled her twinkly smile at us and cheerfully said, "Well, you're halfway there!" We have chuckled about that ever since. We have added another since and are expecting number 9 in a few months. We're not going to make it to 14. Call us quiters! But, we have done our best, in large part, because of Sister Packard. Her personal influence has been poignant in our lives and her legacy will continue on into our children's lives. Not only for the size of our family, but more importantly, for the way we do things, which is patterned in numerous ways after the way we saw the Packards do things.

It was a tremendous blessing, priveledge and honor to have known Sister Packard and to be influenced by her.

We love you all.

Dear Uncle Floyd and Packard family:

Words are so hard to explain all the wonderful memories I have of your family. Alice E. Packard was truly an elect lady. She loved and taught all of us so about loving others, raising a righteous family and being the best wife you can be. I will never forget her kindnesses to me when I was divorced. I really thought at that time that I would die from heart break. I prayed while staying with them that I could have a marriage like Uncle Floyd and Alice's marriage, otherwise I just wanted to stay single. Uncle Floyd never told me that I made mistakes, he just said look over your life and see where you can do better. I took his words to heart and tried even hardier to be better than I was before. God forgave me of things I did not know how to do. It was an honor to be treated like one of their "daughters."

As you know Floyd and Alice have given all of us countless kindnesses. . As we age, we learn ways we could have been kinder and better. I almost wish I could live my life with my old age and wisdom first, then I would not make mistakes because I would have the wisdom. How silly I am, we all are given one life to live and God knew we would make mistakes, so he gave us his son.

May your family be comforted. I hope that you will remember always her laughter and wonderful example.
Much love,

Tony Andre

Sister Packard was a gracious lady and Mission Mom. We appreciated all the steak dinners during our mission. We appreciated using your home for Firesides. Your words of encouragement were greatly appreciated, too. Thanks for the hugs, loving care and concern for all of the Missionaries. These memories have lasted and will last forever.

My deepest sympathy to all of Sister Packard's family. I loved and respected her with all my heart. As a young bride and young mother I was assigned as her visiting teacher and spoke of her many times and the things she taught me, instead of me teaching her. In fact I just relayed a story about her in Relief Society not too long ago. She will forever be an "elect lady" and her place in my heart is sealed forever. A true friend, a great mother, a wonderful grandmother and a devoted Sister in the Church. I am deeply sad for your loss. We should have all had such wonderful mothers. My Best to Brother Packard, and all of her wonderful children.

To my treasured Packard family,
My heart goes out to you as you say goodbye to your dear wife and mother. My own father, Carl Calcara, passed away just 2 weeks ago in Encinitas, so I understand the joy and sorrow of this passing (we buried my father in Southern Utah, and I thought of Alice as we passed by Bunkerville!).
The Packard home was a second home for me, as I home taught you with Brother Stay for many years, as I hung out with my buddy Owen, and tried to be close to my crush Esther! I remember being tested by then Primary President Alice Packard to graduate from Primary in 1972, and the many years of enjoying the sweet tone of your home.
Floyd and Alice (forever President and Sister Packard to me) have always been my biggest mentors, and I have wonderful memories of them and each of their 14 children anf the devoted service to Heavenly Father and our savior, Jesus Christ.
May you bask in the peace of the Comforter and the wonderful memories of a righteous mother in Zion.
With great love and respect,
