Ann Spinola Obituary

Ann Openshaw Spinola

1940 ~ 2024

Park City, UT-Ann Openshaw Spinola, 84, passed away on May 30, 2024.

Ann was born on January 11, 1940, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Vern L. Openshaw and Ruth Georgena Floyd. She attended East High School and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. While at the U, Ann married C. Smith Sumner, and had two children, Jayne and Devon. Later, they divorced. While raising their children, she obtained an Associate of Arts degree in Interior Design from Cañada College in California. She owned and operated Ann Sumner Design for 30 years in Northern California. Ann loved to design and shop for several long-term clients, where she enjoyed the expression of color. She applied her skills to remodeling two of her own houses and building her dream home in Sonoma. While remodeling her first home, she fell in love with and married her neighbor, Thad Spinola.

Ann was a devoted friend, sister, wife, mother, and Grammy to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ann loved to "go and do". She traveled to many places, near and far, with family and friends. She was also an active member of her communities in California and Park City. She kept in touch with her Kappa Kappa Gamma sisters, and served a term as President of the local chapter. She especially loved the Newcomers Club, where she developed several dear friendships.

Ann is survived by her children, Jayne Sumner and Devon Sumner (Judy); her grandchildren, Tyson Anae (Jesi), Bristol Anae, Madin Anae, Harrison Anae, Toni Anae; Joseph Sumner, Sarah Sumner Martinez (Roberto), and Hannah Sumner; her great-grandchildren, Paige Anae and Teo Anae; and her siblings, Judy Hetzel, and Staf Openshaw (Jeri). She was preceded in death by her parents and the love of her life, Thad Spinola.

Ann's passing has left a void in the hearts of her friends and family. Her strength, resourcefulness, and caring nature were qualities that endeared her to all who knew her. Her absence will be deeply felt, and her memory will be cherished by those she left behind.

A private graveside service will be held for family and friends.
