Anthony Caputo Obituary

Anthony 'Tony' Michael Caputo

1949 - 2021

Salt Lake City, UT—Anthony "Tony" Michael Caputo, 72, a loving husband, father, "Papou," and the "Deli Lama," unexpectedly departed in the early morning hours of March 10, 2021. Tony was born on February 5, 1949 in Price, Utah, to Mary Louise Fowles Caputo and Dominic (Nick) Peter Caputo. Tony was the oldest of six children. He lost his father at an awfully early age, a loss that would drive many into a life of despair. Tony became the anchor of his family. With the responsibility and weight of the world on his shoulders, Tony learned resilience first hand and has never since been guarded with his generosity. The greatest gift that Tony brought into the lives of his family was his darling wife, Mary. Tony met Mary in 1969 when he declared, "I'm going to marry that woman." On June 14th, 1971, Tony wed Mary Nackos Morris at Jordan Pines, Brighton, Utah.

Tony and Mary created a magical life with their two boys, Matthew and Peter. The Caputo family had a history of working in food and Tony owned and ran several restaurants in his early professional years. His boys spent many nights in those kitchens. In 1997, he ventured out to open the now world renowned Caputo's Market & Deli. Watching Tony's interactions with each and every person who walked through his doors was the most inspiring experience. He greeted everyone with a smile, a genuine belly laugh, and offered his quick sharp wit. It didn't matter what color your skin was, if you were the Governor, or a blue collar worker, he made every person feel like an old friend by welcoming them with his kindness, respect and hospitality.

From the day his first granddaughter, Gianna, was born, followed by Francesca, Simon, Amelia, Maya and Julius, not a day would go by when Tony did not brag to anyone who'd listen about his dearest grandchildren, for whom he truly lived. In his faux retirement, he co-founded the Old Coots, a group of wise friends who'd dole out advice to anyone who'd listen under the slogan "it's probably bad advice, but it's free."

Tony and Mary were preparing to live out their post pandemic life together and were planning to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this June with friends and family from near and far. Tony's passing came as a complete shock to the Caputo family and the local community that loved him dearly. Though we always knew Tony was a giant, we didn't appreciate the scope of how many lives he has touched. The devotion and love the Salt Lake community has shown to our family will never be forgotten.

Preceded in death by his father, Dominic, and mother, Mary Lou. Tony is survived by his wife, Mary, his children Matthew (Yelena), Peter (Heloisa), Mick Davis (January), and his six grandchildren, his brothers Gregory Caputo, Douglas Caputo, Daniel "Butch" Larsen and Michael Larsen and his sister Kristina Bailey.

A viewing was held on Monday, March 15th. A Funeral was held the following morning under the care of Neil O'Donnell Funeral Home. A recording of the services is available for viewing at www.neilodonnellfuneralhome.com select Tony's obituary and select 'Photos/Videos'. The family will host a Celebration of Life later this summer for all who wish to attend. In the spirit of Tony's generosity, the family is establishing the Tony Caputo Foundation to give to humanitarian and environmental causes Tony deeply believed in, the details of which are forthcoming.

The obituary is beautifully written and spot on about this wonderful man, Tony Caputo! I belonged to All Saints Episcopal Church in SLC. Tony was so generous in helping us feed our parish for dinners at church! I also belong to P.E.O. and volunteered at the Tracy Aviary. He always gave a gift certificate when I "begged" from him. Not sure he ever knew my name, but he always knew ME! Thank you for sharing this great man. I am so happy I knew him!

I was shocked, totally shocked to hear of Tony’s death! I no longer live in Utah, but I have beautiful memories of this kind, funny and generous man. I lost count of how many times I came begging for my church, the Tracy Aviary and others where I volunteered. Tony, God bless you and your lovely family and may you be resting in peace, my friend. I just learned of Tony's passing and would like to express my deepest condolences. Years ago I had the joy of working with Tony on a TV show on KJZZ. He cooked amazing dishes and brought cheer and joy to everyone involved, both participants and viewers. We all looked forward to his visits and I'm so grateful for the opportunity I had to work and interact with him.

I have known Tony since his first days working at Granato’s Deli & Market. Tony was the face of that store. He was the friendly, welcoming & attentive member of the staff. I always loved visiting with him, he was so personable. I have to say that he was the one who brought life to that store; as much as I love the Granato family. I was pleased to watch him do so well on his own. All of my children and I will miss him. We are so blessed to have known him & had a personal relationship. He will be greatly missed, yet forever appreciated.
