Borge B. Andersen, 77, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2012.He was Born October 20, 1934 to Julius and Margrethe Andersen in Copenhagen Denmark. Borge was raised in Denmark to the age of 14 at which time his family traveled to the United States where they made their home in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from West High and the University of Utah. Borge started working for the Salt Lake Tribune as a paperboy, then a copy boy and then spent 15 years as a staff photographer. In 1968 Borge left the Tribune to start his own photo business. During the next 40 plus years Borge devoted his life to his custom photo house. He specialized in food and commercial photography with a custom lab providing a wide range of services to professional photographers, advertisers and anyone seeking excellent photographic services. Borge taught photography at the University of Utah for many years mentoring and sharing his love of photography with countless students. He served many years in the Army Reserves, retiring on October 20, 1994, with the rank of Major. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints serving in many callings including ward clerk, Gospel Doctrine teacher, and Temple worker. He was always willing to help them hone their craft no matter their skill level. The impact Borge had on all aspects of photography is immeasurable. Despite his gruff facade Borge was a kind, big-hearted, generous and charitable man who loved to help everyone he met. He is survived by his sister Ane A. Borge was the photographer taking pictures during my High School football career and later our Home Teacher in the Valley View 1st ward. He was always there, and my boys loved him and his companion Marty Nygaard. He finished my film and slides for me later on as part of my profession, and restored some glass negatives. He was always a great host for his annual Christmas party which was a highlight of the season. Great man and friend and I think of him often....as he is missed and loved!

I just heard of Borge's passing and with it I was flooded with many fond memories. As a young art director for Winborg & Winborg Borge help me get the most out our photo sessions, he showed great patiences with me as I tried to take the art direction roll. The Andersen's are a great family, I always loved talking with Julius when I went to his shop to pick up dies. They were both icons of Salt Lake advertising and will be missed.

Borge,
You were the person who gave me a chance and hired me to work in your professional lab when I am sure most other people would not have. You were my boss; you were my mentor and better yet you were a dear friend. You touched the lives of all the people you encountered and selflessly helped many people asking for nothing in return. You inspired me to better a better worker, a better photographer and most importantly you inspired me to be a better person. My only regret is that I wish I could have told you this in person before you left. You will be missed by many but your positive influence on this world will carry on forever and continue to spread. All the best!

Borge was always kind and generous to me, a man with a keen eye and attention to detail. I was always impressed with the professional top quality prints he made. I remember once when I had just a simple photo of an autumn leaf sitting atop a rock w/ a waterfall in the background printed up, I never cared much for the photo, but Borge loved it! after that I looked at that photo in a whole new light, as it turns out this has become one of my most popular photos...A man w/ a keen eye indeed, you will be missed Borge! may you rest in Peace! Thank you for all the beautiful prints!

Borge was very generous with his time and resources. There are numerous young photographers that he mentored and assisted. Some he even help support on their LDS missions. I have known him since 1975, and will greatly miss him and his kindness.

Borge helped my find a job as a photo assistant right out of college. In the 27 years since, he's been a friend and mentor. He's always been willing to take the time to help solve technical problems and share his expertise. I saw him do this with other photographers as well, always willing to help us make our way. I will truly miss his friendship and help. Thank you Borge.

The SLC photographic community will certainly miss Borge. He was a great mentor, teacher, and extremely generous individual. Borge's intuitive perfection, focus on quality, and deep loyalty for his employees reflects his extraordinary disposition. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to know Borge and appreciate his mentoring through my photographic career.

I was saddened to hear of the loss of my early mentor. I first studied photography under Borge at the U of U and he was especially encouraging to me. He even allowed me to use the darkroom at The Trib a couple of times, so I could see how real photojournalists worked. It was exciting to me and I was thereafter hooked on a commercial photography profession. I'll miss you, Borge. Thanks for everything.

Dear Ane,
I only experienced a brief stroke from Borge's master brush as a photography student at the U and a part time worker at Media Maker. Borge let me use his studio to shoot some portraits of my parents and neighbours which I have never forgotten about. I still remember how excited Borge was when he talked about his experiences with Ansel Adams.
Borge was definitely in "the zone".

As a young married couple, we were very fortunate to have Borge as our home teacher. When each of our children were born he would show up with a case of diapers as a gift. He knew that this was an expense that was difficult for a growing family. Each Christmas his gift to us was to take our family portrait and make sure that we had copies enough for our families. Borge set the bar high for any home teacher and friend that followed. We have always had a great love and respect for this man and know that the earth has been a better place having him walk upon it. 'Til we meet again.

I met Borge as a young immigrant from Denmark, as we were sponsored by Borge Father, Julius Andersen. I always looked up to Borge and professionalizm in photography. Not too original Dansk people remaining in SLC.

Ane and family. I am so sorry for the loss of my great friend, mentor and boss. I can't tell you how much his influence in my life has meant. From words of council on leaving for a mission, to college and education, six years in the Army Reserves mostly with him, to the simple teaching of learning the craft of photography, he was a dear and love friend who left us all too soon. I think I qualify as his first employee. Those early years with Borge and Gerald were truly wonderful. He watched after me and cared for me in ways only he and I will remember. His memory will not be forgotten.

Ane, and Rick - It was a real priveledge to know Borge as a customer in banking and as a friend as I grew to appreciate him over the years. He was a man of integrity with a generous heart. I loved to give him the business and he would always give it back better. We really had some good times over lunch and working on his business ventures. I will miss the Christmas partys at the studio and especially your potatoe salad, Ane. It is the best!!! May you be at peace with his passing. I will miss him too.

I am sorry to hear this news. I was a copy boy at the Tribune when Borge was a photographer--and took a couple of photography classes from him at the University of Utah. I remember him as an extraordinary photographer, for sure, and maybe more importantly for being a kind and gentle man.

Dear Andersen Family; I had been doing business with Borg since the mid seventies. He always treated me like I was his special client and gave me the finest service with a sincere smile. I loved doing business with him as I always knew it would be only the finest work no questions. He was known as the best in Utah ( and further) and he will be missed. Thank You Borg for all the help and encouragement! God Bless!

I loved Borg. He inspired my deepest love of photography by enlarging the slides for art. He copied my 25,000 slides on to CD's. He told me "you will never regret it" I tod him I was his IRA. I will miss him.

Dear Ane and Family, I was sad to learn of Borge's passing. As you know, I was working for Borge when he started Borge Andersen's and Associates in 1970. He gave me a great start in my own photography career. I worked for him and with him for six and a half years. Together we created Edison Street Gallery and brought some of the best 20th century photographers to Salt Lake. We photographed the Salt Lake Golden Eagles and Utah Stars. We shared many experiences together that I have subsequently shared with many of my own students over the years. Borge always amazed me. I would frequently ask him what the "exposure" was to see if I could trap him. He would look around (without a light meter) and give it to me within a half a stop. He said he just compared the light to his memory of the editorial room at the Tribune - 30th sec @ f.5.6. He was a gadget freak, always had to have the latest piece of equipment. All I had to do was own a Nikon or Hasselblad and I had access to any of the lenses and accessories that they made. Yes he was a bit gruff, but very generous. We will all miss him.

We shall miss our dear friend wonderful Borge. We learned so much from his gifts and wisdom and humor and humility. He was an artist. We loved learning about his experiences photographing the Carl Bloch paintings in Denmark and bringing them here and helping watch over their cleaning and restoring and history. He accomplished great things in life and humbly blessed all he touched. His excellence is unsurpassed. We are grateful for his love and influence and friendship. We love him and will miss him, but look forward to seeing him again! Borge, you inspire us on!

I was a customer of Borge's since my teens, and have been taking my film to Borge for some 20 plus years. Like Borge I too was in the military, in the National Guard more specifically and I would often stop by in uniform and we would talk about our respective service. That gruff disposition was pretty easy to see through, because he would also ask about my daughter too.
Thanks for your friendship and for all that you have done for my photography and all of the other photographers you've influenced Borge!

Ana as you know, at one point in my life I had my life threatened by a drug dealer coming out of prison. As a single mother of 2 children one at that time an 14 year old son. The other of age and able to care of
herself if necessary. Borge was a good friend of Keith "Buzz" Robison and myself. Buzz had died 3 years earlier and Borge was the only person I felt I could trust to help me and my children in case this threat was realised. I explained my problem and asked Borge if he would act as guardian of my son until he reached adult age if this occured. He said he would be honored. He took on this responsibility even though I seemed to live through all the threats this person could throw. Since then he has aided myself and my chrildren throughout their growing up. He taught my son through an apprentice program his photography. My son, David Anthony"Tony" Jacobs, never knew a father and Borge was the closest thing to one to him and a great influence on him. I and my children,"Tony" and Ila will miss him as if he were our own blood family. Tony has often expressed a great affection for you Ana and I feel as if I know you through all I have heard. My heart goes out to you for the loss of Borge. The world is less bright for the loss of his light. With my love, Myrna M. Jacobs
