Carling Allen Obituary

Carling Dorr Allen 1918 ~ 2004  He was the man we called "Sweetheart", "Daddy" and "Grandpa".  He was the daddy with the twinkling blue eyes, the gentle smile and the rich tenor voice.  He was the man who told elaborate stories, who danced with the children and grandchildren to Big Band music and who carried a picture of his bride in his pocket.  He was the grandpa who ran races and won at age 82, who loved the smell of the garden and who could make   remarkable things out of bits of scrap.  He was Carling Dorr Allen – the man we loved.  Carling was born August 5, 1918 in Kingston, Utah.  He was eighth of 12 children born to Marion Devalson and Laura Priscilla Porter Allen. Carling passed away at home on May 12, 2004 at the age of 85.  Carling attended Piute County schools. He served in the Army, playing in an Army Band from l941-45. He married his eternal sweetheart, Carma Hansen, in the Manti Temple on   December 23, 1946. They were blessed with 11 wonderful children. Their courtship lasted over 57 years during which time they never stopped holding hands.  After graduating from BYU, Carling returned to Piute to teach music for 16 years.  A love of teaching, singing, and dancing stayed with him throughout his life. Always an  inventor, he then turned to manufacturing his suspended seating, relocating to Utah Valley. For a time he sold World Book Encyclopedias.    A kind and gentle man, he spoke only positively of others. His children and grandchildren have been truly blessed by his loving acceptance and encouragement. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many   callings. Carling and Carma enjoyed serving two missions, one in Nauvoo and the latest in Palmyra. Their love for the Savior is evident through their lives of service. Carling is survived by his wife (Carma) and nine of their children, Bruce (Laura) Allen, Mesa, AZ; Darlynn (Larry) Tolman, American Fork; Jeannine (Dave) Thomas, Orem;   Nanette (Steve) Averett, Springville; Minon (Tom) Smith, St. George; Lavon (Nan) Allen, Orem; Thalia (Marty) Mansfield, Lehi; Patrice (Ken) Bretschneider, Orem; Elise (Rich) Warner, Rockton, IL.  Two daughters, Lynette and Carol, preceded him in death.   Carling and Carma are the grandparents of 66 and the great- grandparents of 38.  He is also survived by two brothers, Marion (LaRae), LaVerkin, Utah, and Merrill (Elaine), Kingston, Utah and one sister, Leda (Wayne) Dowdle, Salome, AZ.  Funeral services will be held at the Geneva Heights Stake Center, 546 N. 500 W., Orem, on Monday, May 17, 2004, at 12:00 noon. Viewings will be held on Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Sundberg Olpin Mortuary, 495 S. State, Orem, and from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the church preceding the funeral. Interment will be in the American Fork   City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at   www.sundbergolpinmortuary.com.

To the wonderful Allen family. I was only 10 when your family moved into our neighborhood and ward in Orem. Every one of you, both parent and children have been wonderful examples to me during my life. Your examples have helped sculpt my ideas of what a great family should be. I always thought that Brother Allen was a quiet, stablizing influence in the community. When the song by Dan Fogelburg, "Leader of the Band" plays on the radio for some reason I think of Brother Allen. He brought the spirit of music to the ward in which we lived. His whole family were all very musically inclined and shared their many talents with us. I'm sure he will be missed by many of us, but I'm sure he's up in the Spirit World making beautiful music.

My love and sympathy go to you all.

Dear Carma & Family: Have so many wonderful memories of Carling and his family. How hard he worked on the home he built in Circleville, his chairs he invented, most of all the fine music teacher he was at Piute HIgh School. He could bring out the best of the best in the students, the untiring time he spent to make a great music department. How he could tune and fix intruments. I wish I had just taken the time to tell him, how much I appreciated what he did for the students singlely and collectively. Thanks, Carma for sharing your husband with we the students of PHS. Dear Carma and the Allen family,

Carling Allen was a wonderful teacher at Piute High School. I learned lessons that I have used and will never forget in my lifetime. His lessons on the importance of eating whole foods (not refined and processed) were true--and his lessons came long before it became publicized in the science world. He taught me to play the Baritone--and how proud I was when he selected a musical number for the band which had a solo part for the baritone and I. I have thought of him often with love and appreciation--I wish I would have told him!! I have so many memories of Piute High School, and he has always been a vital part of those memories.

My condolences to his family.

Mr. Allen's Family:

When your husband/father/grandfather taught me in school, they were called "Mr." so I always think of him as "Mr. Allen". He was a very nice man and a wonderful music teacher. When I sit in church and watch people lead the singing and they don't have a clue, I think to myself "Obviously they didn't have Mr. Allen to teach them the proper way to lead music." My many years in band were a wonderful experience, and even though I wasn't much of a musician, I gained much from the experience. My condolences to all of you. I know your memories are wonderful ones of a wonderful man.
