Charles Burnett Obituary

Charles Vern Burnett Jr.

1926-2022

Salt Lake City, UT-Charles Vern Burnett Jr. ("Chick") passed away August 30, 2022, two months shy of his 96th birthday. He was born November 1, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Charles Vern Burnett and Hazel Leona Ownby Burnett. He was one of five children, with older sisters Beverly Boone and Gloria Smith, and his younger brothers George and Jeffery.

He met his beloved Nadine Edna Brewster in chemistry class at South High at the beginning of their sophomore years. They were pretty much inseparable, until Chick was called to serve as a missionary in the Southern States Mission and Nadine went to the Northern States Mission. After they returned, they married in the Salt Lake Temple on May 28, 1948. Following graduation from the University of Utah, and an adventure with an archeological dig at Danger Cave, Chick became a math and science teacher. He taught first at Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah, then on to the Phoenix Indian School in Arizona and the Ft. Wingate Indian School in New Mexico. His career then took him to the Bureau of Indian Affairs headquarters in Washington D.C., and to regional offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Along the way, Chick and Nadine had 8 children. After retiring from the BIA, he taught math and computer science in Salt Lake City.

Chick, a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, served as a Branch President, in numerous bishoprics and his favorite, Sunday School teacher. Later in life, he and his wife also served a senior mission in Fiji.

Chick was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, his precious wife, his youngest daughter Karen Burnett Watson (Brian), and three grandchildren, Kevin Watson (Jennifer), Michelle Abboud and Patrick Crow. He is survived by his children, Kathleen Burnett, Marcia Abboud (Mitch), Lynne Burnett (Janet), Charles Brewster Burnett (Elizabeth), Penny Maranville (Steven), Peter Brewster Burnett (Rebecca) and David Brewster Burnett (Jeanne); 25 grandchildren and a bunch of great-grandchildren. Chick was known for his keen sense of humor and love for his family and friends.

The funeral for Charles Vern Burnett will be held Saturday, September 10, 2022, at 2:00 pm, at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. Service will be preceded by family visitation at 1:00 pm. Interment at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
