Clarence Bennion Obituary

Craig "Buford-Mad Dog" Bennion "Gone to the lake"  Clarence Craig Bennion passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, July 11, 2004 while enjoying his houseboat and family at Lake Powell, his 'Shangri-la'. Craig understood how to live life to the fullest. He had an infectious laugh and energetic personality, which impacted the lives of his many friends. For Craig, life had two speeds, parked or wide open. When he wasn't in the garage, covered in grease, fixing his toys, he loved to ski, water ski, play racquetball, snowmobile in the Uintas and ride his Harley. He was passionate about his houseboat, which he built, and shared it openly with his friends and family. It was a favorite spot for the grandkids, and we will all miss him at the helm, smoking his pipe, squinting out at the lake, enjoying its beauty. He is survived by his wife, Christine Lynn Bennion, daughter Torrey Lynne Bennion Anderson, step-son Carter Gregory, step-daughter Dusti Ondryas and his grandchildren, Annika, Eric, Alicia, Andre, Avery, Sofie and Sadie, whom he adored. He is preceded in death by son, Todd Mitchell Bennion, Parents, Clarence "Bud" Bennion and Anna Alene Thompson, and step-mother Ione R. Bennion.  Funeral Services will be held Saturday July 17th, 2004 at 11:00 a.m., Mountain View Memorial Mortuary and Cemetery, 3115 East 7800 South. Friends and family may call for visitation Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Mountain View and Saturday one hour prior to service. Interment immediately following.

Dear all who knew and were dear to the great Beuford,

When I was little, he let me play with his toys as I was his son. I wrecked his dodge stealth as I pulled the e brake and rolled it into his firebird.

And he still loved me, and let me come to lake powell to parade around on all his waterborn toys.......and still I tested his forgiveness as I ran a wetbike into the houseboat.

My memories of Beuford are nothing but joy, as he was no less than Santa Clause to me and my growing up. As one lives such a great life, so the life to come is filled with that which he hath sewn, which is nothing but love and happiness.....

We will miss you Beuford and will see you once again as you are now looking upon us from the heavens instead of the driver seat of your boat. A men.

Chris, Carter, & family ...

I was in disbelief and saddened when I heard of Craig's passing. He has always been so full of life. I've known Craig since he had his little booth, under the stairs in the center of the Cottonwood Mall, selling insurance for Farmers. He insured my first car, a VW, back in 1966 when I was a new sixteen year old driver. Craig has been a good advisor and friend ever since. I wish things were different, but my memory of him will always be wonderful. May God bless you during your time without Craig and as you deal with your tremendous loss.

Hi...Chris, Carter and Dusti,

My Our Creator be with you all.

In memory of a wonderful, inspiring, man. Craig, Thank You for giving so much of yourself and for being the voice of a lot of generations. We have learned a lot from you, Craig. Many gifts, talents and generosity to carry on. We all have memories that go back that we shared with Craig and family.

Chris, You are all welcome to bring yourself and all, to the Fort Hall Indian Reservation to visit a Pow Wow Festival, (yearly) in August 12-15 2004. It is a beautiful experience and an absolute riot for everyone. Or another year perhaps. I would love to see you all.

Dear Chris and Family,

Craig was a wonderful friend. I truly enjoyed working with him and traveling with the Pocatello Commercial Team to schools as Craig was always great fun to be around. Farmers will not be the same without his humor. Please take care and know that there are several people with you in their prayers. We will all miss him greatly.

Dear Bennion Family,

I was a friend of "Buford" from the Boys Trip to Sun Valley. We was a wonderful man always helpful for those of us who could not ski as well as Buford. He would always have a helpful hint. He lived life to the fullest. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all in this time of sorrow.

Chris, Torrey and Family:

We are so sorry to hear about Craig's passing. Chris, I am one of Torrey's good friends. I was the maid of honor at her wedding and I went to high school with her. We want to extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family.

Torrey, I know this must be a difficult time for you. It sounds like this was really unexpected. We can relate a little bit. We lost Anthony's mom to lung cancer just last November. Even though we expected it, it was amazingly difficult for both of us.

Your dad was a lot of fun. I know he taught you to enjoy the outdoors and was the motivation for your love of skiing. We want you to know our thoughts are with you. We think of you often and are sorry we can't be there for you now.

All our love,

To the Family of Craig,

I heard just today of his passing. May God give you courage and strength in your hour of grief. Craig was a great friend although we have had distance between us for some time. When I needed help or advice on insurance matters he was always there. The calls were never short due to our recalling days gone past. I will truly miss not being able to call him. Craig is now in a better place and having just as much fun as he ever did. Once again God Bless.

I was just a longhaired kid on the ski patrol, feeling pretty nervous and uncertain and trying to fit in, when up skis this guy - big smile, hearty laugh - asks me my name, throws off his glove, shakes my hand, claps me on the shoulder and promptly names me "Princess". It is with this warm welcome into his world that I will always remember Craig.

In all the intervening years that warmth never faded, and I was always glad when we found the time to catch up on our lives.

I'm sorry I won't see him again in this life, but am tremendously glad to have had the chance to know him.

Dear Chris & Family,

Bufford in my mind was the ultimate Man. Fun, giving, happy, straight forward......He touched everybody! He even showed me his secret runs at Solitude and encouraged me to try and keep up with the rest of the "Gang" on the hill.

God bless him!

Take care

Chris and Family,

I am not sure when Spud and I first met Bufford, I suspect it was when we skipped high school on a Friday afternoons and went skiing at Solitude. Seems Bufford was alway there "angulating" his skis and teaching people how to get down the mountian. We had 30+ years of Boys Trips to Sun Valley and it would not be a Boys Trip without the Bufford there. Frequently in his Kermit Green ski suit, laughing and skiing and just having a great time. He was unique, a really great man, funny, honest, and a rock. If you were a friend of Bufford, then that was all that was necessary, he would do anyting for you if you asked. Spud and I will miss him, it won't be the same in Sun Valley. We'll have to have start a Bufford Memorial Annual Ski Run this January. What a great guy, we will all miss him. I also included condolences from the Claudio Gubser Family of Davos Switzerland. Claudio is a frequent Boys Trip member who drove back from a Sun Valley trip with Bufford and stayed with him to ski in SLC. God Speed, Bufford! You Rocked Life!

Dear Chris,

Everyone who knows Craig shares your loss. Craig was one of the guys who taught us to ski and teach skiing. We raced the canyon and skied when nobody else would ski. Craig was the older brother I didnt have and sometimes, the second father I needed. He always encouraged us to do what we wanted (or needed) to do, no judgement only encouragement. No limits. Life wears most of us down, changes when or what or why we do what we do, but not Craig. I dont think he ever slowed down, he got fatter (we all have). This was the right way to go, maybe not the right time but the right way, "On the Lake" close to those he loved, and doing things he loved.

If there is anything John or I can do just pick up the phone. 801 269-8999.

Carter, Chris and family,

I’m writing to offer my deepest sympathy during this painful time.

It’s been roughly 18 years since I was last on the lake with you, and to this day I’m still telling stories to friends and family about the great times had by all. Whether he was fixing the fuel pump gasket with a cardboard box, knocking people off of kneeboards with the jetovator, spraying people with a wet bike, or dry starting from the TOP of the houseboat, Craig tackled life with enthusiasm and passion few people can match. Let’s all hope that we can learn from him to live life to its fullest and make the most out of every moment.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sincerely,

Mark Haycock and family

To Beuford: a man of honor, humor, unending energy, continually working on things, and most giving man...

What an incredible man Beuford was!!! I am totally shocked after just being with him, Chris, Andre, and Avery 2 weeks earlier at Lake Powell. "The Latimer Girls", Denise, Shani, and Simone had a most incredible time with Beuford. He pulled us on skis & wakeboards, taught Shani how to lower the jet skis from the house boat, gas, oil, and drive them ....she was his right hand man (woman)! We sat on top of the houseboat, drank a little wine (ok, alot), reminenced of all the old trips and he spoke of his love for the lake...yes,his Shangri-la! I am very blessed to have a final time with Bueford and Chris on their boat in the place he loved most. I watched Beuford ask little Avery (4) for "hugs for Grandpa" and she was so sweet as she put her arms around this big man with a heart of gold. Also, when Bueford took Andre' (8) for a last jetski ride before we left the lake...what love and caring he had for Andre'. Beuf....thanks for all of the many times together....I have videos and memories of you when Shani was 5 days old in Sun Valley, 6 years old you taught her how to water ski, and now at 21 years....you taught her how to "go for it" on the jet ski. You have been a part of our lives....You were there to toast champagne when Dustin was born, Dust drove your boat (with help from you) at age 2, Dustin wrecked your car at 6 years of age, conquered your wet-bike at age 8, and put a hole in your wet-bike at age 10....you loved and accepted him and us every step of the way. Your deep friendship with Lats had a beautiful, unspoken understanding that only the two of you knew. I'll never forget your strong, gruff voice (with a few expletives) as you taught Lats how to parrellel park your brand new Eliminator next to the houseboat. You will be missed greatly but your love of adventure and willingness to share it with those you loved, will be in all of us forever. Thank you for giving so very much of yourself...my kids, Dustin & Shani, and myself are all better people because of what you have shared with us. In God's hands now...please REST and don't fix any more TOYS! We love you and will always cherish your memory!

Dear Chris and family,

I can't imagine the shock you are in, because I am stunned. Always having thought I would one day make it to Lake Powell, I shouldn't have waited 30 years. Bufford was a great and kind man and adored you and the family. Please stay in touch when you come to Ketchum.

I am truly sorry to hear of Craig’s passing. In the short time I knew Craig (Benny) I can not think of one time he did not make me smile or laugh. There will be a void in the snowmobile group that no one will be able to replace. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Chris & Family,

We are very sorry to hear about the loss of Craig. He has been a great friend for many years. I could always count on him if I was in some type of bind. When I was very young, I used to run around his office and he was always giving me hell about one thing or another but he was always looking out for me.

He will be greatly missed by Mary & I.

Chris, you are in our thoughts and prayers. God bless all of you.

Dear Chris & Family:

We were so shocked and saddened to learn of Benny's sudden death. Our love, heartfelt sympathy, and prayers are with you all. We were comforted, however, in the knowledge that Benny died doing something he truly loved - - having fun with his family.

Yesterday when we heard of Benny's passing we sat and reflected of our fond memories of Benny and you. We will never forget the wonderful times we had with you at Starvation Lake - - boating, wet biking, telling jokes, laughing, and having a wonderful time with our families and friends. Remember Lake Havasu?

You are in our thoughts and prayers, and if there is ANYTHING we can do to help you, please give us a call.

We are so sorry we cannot be with you in person this weekend. We will be out of town this weekend for a family wedding, but please know that our thoughts are with you.

May God bless you in this time of your sorrow with fond memories and the knowledge that you will see each other again.

With all of our love,

Cyndi Gardner

Chris-

I'm sorry I missed you Monday. I know there are no words that really help, but know that we are all thinking of you. We are here if you need anything, even if it's just a shoulder to cry on.

I have many memories of old Craiger. I cannot believe he is gone. I know how hard it was to lose my little bro unexpectedly. I can only imagine what is going through your head right now.

You and Craig have lots of friends and family. I hope they are all there for you now.

Hang in there. Call if you need to. And know that even though we don't see each other often, I always count you as a great friend.

Love ya,

Cyndi
