Daniel Orth Obituary

In Loving Memory
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend Daniel Jay Orth passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, November 8, 2012, in Sandy, UT. He was born on July 25, 1952 in Tacoma, Washington to Donald Jay and Jayne Marlo Orth. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Georgia, South Carolina Mission. He married the love of his life, Karrie Venita Mitchell on August 22, 1975 in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity.
Dan has always been a hard worker and owned his own grocery store (Food World) in downtown Salt Lake. He then worked for Associated Food Stores in their advertising department until he retired in 2010. Service was always of the upmost importance to Dan and he held many callings in the Church. No one who had him as a teacher could forget him. He truly loved his most recent calling, one he spoke of often, as the Bishop of the Eastridge 4th Ward. His favorite pastimes included golfing, riding motorcycles, playing basketball, working on his cars, and especially spending time with his family. He absolutely loved the beauty of God's creations and was always happy to go for a ride. Dan spoke to others often of his testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a strong example of the Church.
Dan is survived by his wife, Karrie Venita and his 5 children, Trent (Chrissy), Justin (Julianne), Allison (Joshua) Banks, "Bear" Derek (Laura), Nathan Orth; 11 grandchildren and 2 on-the-way. Also survived by his mother Jayne, and siblings Linda (Ferron) Holt, Jerrilyn (Dale) Aste, David (Donna) Orth, Sandra (James) Hodge, Brian (Melinda) Orth, JoAnn (Brent) Law, as well as an amazing extended family. He was preceded in death by his son Gregory, his father Donald, and his father-in-law David Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 16, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Eastridge 4th Ward, 11777 S. Willow Wood Drive (880 East). Friends and family can visit Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East 10600 South in Sandy and at the church Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Dear Orth family,
We offer our sincerest condolences to your family. We absolutely loved living on Cedar Ridge Road and driving by the Orth house hoping to catch a glimpse of Dan out in the yard ready to smile and wave. We feel privileged to have known Dan and are grateful that God blessed us with his acquaintance. Dan was a special friend / cousin of Laura's mom (Ruth Ricks) and always made us feel like family.

Karrie and family, I am so very sorry to hear about Dan and all that has happened in the past few years. I truly loved Dan as a friend and someone I would always consider family. I know this is a lot too late to say I wish I would have seen him after our years at Foodworld. Please know he will really be missed here. All our love and blessings to your family. I feel like I am the luckiest person in the world to have had Dan as my Big Brother! Dan was always there to protect me, he became my hero very early in my life.
Karrie, your devotion, love and concern for Dan really touched my heart.
Dan was one of a kind, I loved his sense of humor and he loved to tease people. Dan never asked what can I do for you, he just did it. Dan was always helping people. He had a love for life and great devotion to his family. Karrie, may you and your family find peace during this hard time.
Love
Jerri

Dear Orth family,
I am so saddened by the passing of Bishop Orth. He helped me spiritually through our many talks. He is the most kind, and caring person anyone could imagine. I was blessed to have been a member of the Eastridge 4th ward when he was bishop. May the Lord bless you through this difficult time. But, he was so special, the Lord has a much higher calling for him. My prayers are with you.

Dear Karrie and Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. You are such a wonderful family.

When we think of Dan, we remember a man who was without guile just as Nathanael in the New Testament, his words came from the heart. Anyone who knew him felt of his great love for his Savior. We will miss the great feeling of unconditional love we always felt from him. We will always smile as we remember his quick wit and unique sense of humor. We are truly better people for knowing him and greatful for being able call him our friend.

Dan is so missed here at Associated Foods. He was a big influence on many of our lives. I learned so much about the grocery industry in the years I worked with him. Dan definitely left a big imprint on a lot of us. Few people leave that impression in our lives but he was one of them. He is talked about many times and his sense of humor. Dan always brought a smile to our faces as he would greet us in the morning with "Welcome To Work"
