Even though I had never met Darrell, he was friends with my father, Ken. My dad loved to see him in the mornings for coffee, and it is obvious Darrell's humor very much touched my father. He will be missed.

To Carol and the entire McIlrath Family: My deepest sympathy to you on Darrell's passing. Not only was he my Chief, he was my friend. In 1979 I was hired by Darrell as a part-time firefighter in Bountiful and in 1981 I was hired (again thanks to Darrell)as a career member of the West Valley City Fire Department. Being a firefighter has been my life and Darrell made it all possible for me. We had great times and we even had a few bad times but we got past thoughs. We laughed, joked, and we even cried together a few times. I, for one, will never forget him. When Darrell and Carol stopped here in Ketchikan last year I was so thankful I had the opportunity to tell him what an important part of my life he was. The fire service was better because of him and I was a better man because he came in to my life.

Darrell, my friend, I will miss you!
