David Gotberg Obituary

David Lee Gotberg
1932 ~ 2014
David Lee Gotberg, 82; born June 5, 1932 to Carl Oscar and Lillian Olive Carlson Gotberg, the fifth of six sons, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He passed away peacefully at his home in Sandy on Monday, November 3, 2014 surrounded by his children after a valiant fight with Alzheimers and other causes incident to age.
He married his sweetheart, Donna Hardcastle on July 1, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple. They shared 48 wonderful years together, raising four children and building their dream home in Sandy, Utah. She passed away on January 6, 2002. He then married Gayle Wendel in the Jordan River Temple on May 18, 2002; they enjoyed five and a half happy years together before she passed away October 18, 2007.
He was a graduate of Jordan High School. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at the Kennecott Copper Mine for 35 years. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony; always looking for the opportunity to share with others the joy he felt in living the gospel. He empathized with the down trodden and tried to build their confidence with love. He thoroughly enjoyed his callings as a Scout Master, Bishop and in the Stake Presidency. Some of his most fulfilling moments came while serving a mission with his wife, Donna, in the Substance Abuse Recovery mission and also while serving another mission with his wife, Gayle, at the Salt Lake County Youth Detention Center.
He took pride in staying physically fit playing basketball well into his late 70's and taking daily walks until the last few months of his life. He was a "player's coach" for basketball and softball and had the knack for motivating his teams to win championship titles.
He loved gardening and sharing his produce with family and friends. He loved spending time in the mountains fishing and hunting. For the past seven years he looked forward to the last Tuesday of each month when he got together with his sisters-in-law. He was known for his sense of humor; and he was an AVID BYU FAN!
He is survived by his children, Mark (Saundra), Brenda (Brian) Jeppson, Byron (Krista), Colleen (Glen) Plaizier, fourteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, seven sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law. Preceded in death by his parents, brothers and his wives.
A special thanks to Harmony Hospice and especially to Rudy and Laura for their kind care. Also, a special thanks to all David's loyal friends that continually visited him to the end of his life.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 8, 2014, 11:00 am at the Sandy First Ward, 8670 South 220 East, Sandy, Utah. Viewing will be 6-8 pm Friday, November 7, 2014 at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State in Midvale, and 9:30-10:30 am prior to the services at the Sandy First Ward. Dear Mark, Brenda, Colleen, & Byron, I just heard of this wonderful friends passing. I wish I could have been with U at his funeral. Your Dad had such an impact in my life as my Bishop when I returned from inactivity & of course as our basketball teammate & coach. We won every stake championship under his coaching from 1975-1994. We had many memorable pickup games over at the rec hall. I still remember & teach the principle of paying Tithing with his showing me how to blow on a dime & making it hop up onto a plate. For years we had a deal where I raked my ton of leaves & throw the bags over the back fence & he would spread them on the his garden. He lived his life by example. A man of integrity, a man of honor. Heavens gain is our temporary loss. All my love to each of you

What a wonderful man. Growing up he made me always feel special every time he saw me. When I moved to Sandy when I was 6, he was my Bishop and truly loved him. Thoughts are with your family at this time.

Dear Gotberg family, We are so sad that we found out too late that he had passed away and were unaware of his funeral yesterday. Your parents were such wonderful people we looked up to as great examples. We loved them dearly and miss them. Dave was like a father to Nick with amazing hunting stories, trips to BYU and basketball. He was a great friend and mentor. He had a good sense of humor and would poke fun at himself. He will be missed and loved!!

So thankful that we had the great opportunity of living around and learning from your parents. What a blessing they both were to us and what wonderful memories we have of all your family. Enjoy your lifetime of memories.

Mark, Brenda, Colleen and Byron - it is such an honor to pay tribute to a great, great man whom I have loved as a brother for most of my life. It was my extreme honor to serve as your father's counselor in the bishopric, and to then serve beside him as fellow counselors in the stake presidency. I have sat at his feet and been taught, and I have been by his side as a friend for many, many years. This world has lost a great man, heaven has just welcomed a great man. I love him and I will miss him

Brenda, Mark, Byron and Colleen, so sorry for the loss of your dad. We love Uncle David very much and will miss him. We have so many fun memories and Bryan is always sharing a fishing trip story about dad, David and Wally. What a wonderful reunion with all the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. Love you, Bryan and Tara

Our thoughts and prayers are with the surviving family at this time. While it is difficult loosing a father, grandfather, friend, it is temporary. At such times, please feel the peace that comes with the reassurance all will be together again after this temporary separation. Well done, good and faithful servant.
