David Mangum Obituary

David Lester Mangum
Nov 11, 1938 ~ Sep 27, 2013
Our dear father, brother, uncle and friend passed away after a long struggle with C.O.P.D.
David was born in Denver, CO to Max and Norma Mangum, the oldest of three children. The family moved to SLC in 1947 where he graduated from Olympus High School in 1957 and then attended law school at the University of Utah.
David proudly served as a Sergeant in the 104th Artillery in the Army National Guard during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He married Wanda Kay Fenton in 1968 and helped her raise her daughters Sherrie and Wendy. Kay and David had two beautiful children together, Aaron and Nina, before divorcing many years later.
David was fanatical about automobile racing from an early age beginning with models and later served as President of the Utah Chapter of the Sports Car Club of America and often spent his weekends racing with the SCCA. During the Indy 500, he was unreachable!
He was so creative in several mediums. Among his favorites were photography, painting and pottery where he even won several awards. He had bread-baking down to a science. He was very exacting - weighed his ingredients, no measuring cups for him! We always counted on him for his perfect cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving.
And smart! He knew something about almost everything! At kaffeeklatsch (coffee klatch) with his sisters and brother-in-law, we grudgingly admitted to him that he would be our "phone-a-friend" lifeline on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?".
He is survived by his son Aaron Mangum and daughter Nina Falkner, as well as sisters Wendy Perks and Jo Anne Harvey; grandchildren Karlen, Deylon and Kelly Falkner; nephews Greg Perkins and Christopher Rowe.
Per his wishes, there will be no services. Condolences may be sent to www.legacy.com in David's guestbook.
Oh, dear David, we will miss you so very much! Breathe free!

Dear Mangum Family,
We miss Dave more than words can express. He was a wonderful friend to me for 65+ years an to my wife Martha for the 17 years that we have been married. Way to many great memories to enumerate here but I will miss our monthly telecon and that always cheerful "Hey Portley" greeting.
Rest in peace dear friend, breath deeply and freely...God Bless

Dear Wendy and Jo Anne, Aaron and Nina,
I am so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I last saw him at our daughter's wedding reception, and have kept in touch by reading his many e-mails that were passed on. Dave was one of my best friends in grade school, jr. high and high school. I have so many fond memories of all we did together. Things like riding our Whizzers and car races. Aaron and Nina, I saw you often when you were young. We drifted apart when I moved to California. I will miss your father.

Dear Wendy and Jo Anne,
I was saddened to read of David's passing. I remember many wonderful
Summer days in Fairview when you all were spending time there. David always had a ready smile and was ever ready for a little adventure. You three were the only cousins I had that were near my age and I loved getting together with your family.
I send my love and condolences to you and hope we can stay in touch.
Love, Cathy Peterson Bryan

To Aaron and Nina

You won't know me, but I have worked with your Dad for the past several years since your uncle Bill passed away. I worked on Western Development matters and always enjoyed the annual visits as well as periodic phone calls that I received from your Dad. In fact we spoke within the past couple of months and I truly enjoyed our friendship that developed over these past years. A truly great man with a peaceful calm about him as he went about his work. I will miss our regular visits and talks about things other than business. I considered him a friend and know that as his obituary says in the end, he is now breathing freely. Wishing you both well, as well as other family members as you work through his having departed.
