David Stevens Obituary

David N Stevens
1945-2016
West Jordan, Utah-David "Steve" Stevens passed away peacefully on December 2, 2016 surrounded by family. Illness took his life, but not his spirit. He was a powerhouse of a man. He couldn't go anywhere in the valley without a hello and a thank you from the many people he touched. To know him was to love him. He was born in Delta, Utah to David Elvin and Vera Christensen Stevens. He dedicated his life to education, service and family. He worked for 35 years with the Granite School District as a teacher and administrator. He truly loved his students and fellow educators. David was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings including Bishop. He married the love of his life Carolyn Stevens on June 7, 1968. Together they attempted to raise 7 children; the jury is still out! We will always remember who we are, what we stand for, and most of all who will always love us. David is survived by his wife Carolyn, children: Jennifer, David H. (Chalese), Michael (Jessica), Jim, Mandy (Jerry), Nathan (Amber) and Trish (Ben). 18 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers: Rulon, Larry, Chris and 1 sister, Jody. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister; Elva Lynn, and grandson; Kaleb. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday December 7, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Parkway 4th Ward, 3407 West 9625 South, South Jordan, Utah. A viewing will be held on Tuesday December 6, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. at the church and again on Wednesday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers you may make donations in his name to the Rainy Days Foundation at www.rainydaysfoundation.com Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.memorialutah.com

Dear Carolyn and family,
We are very sorry to hear about Dave's passing. We are sorry that he was sick so long. We are really sorry that we couldn't go to his funeral. We would have loved to have been there.
He was our good friend, especially mine because I was his Vice Principal at Bennion Junior High. We had a great time together. I am very short and he was a big man. We looked like Mutt and Jeff, but we made a good team.
Dave and you introduced us to the Mandarin Restaurant in Bountiful. Dave loved it! We have been there many times since.
Dave is a great man! He was thoughtful and kind, but strong and unbending when he needed to be. The parents and students really liked him.
We wanted to tell you how sorry we are. Please take care of yourselves. Know what a great husband, father and grandfather you have had in this life.
We send our love and condolences.

I was teaching at West Lake Junior High School when Dave became the principal there. He was always so thoughtful and kind. He knew how much I wanted to transfer to a high school. He was instrumental in my transferring to Skyline High School in the middle of the school year and in spite of my being his math department chair at the time. I got to work with him again years later at Granger High School. I am grateful to have known him and grateful for the opportunity he gave me to grow. Dave will be missed by many.

Carolyn,
So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He hired me at Granger High School. He gave me a great start there that continued for 15 years. I have very fond memories of him not only as my boss but also as my friend.
He and I had wonderful times up at Camp Timberlane working with the young women at girls camp.
One of the many things that endeared me to Dave was that when you were talking to him, you know you had his full attention. He really cared about you and wanted to do all he could to help in any situation.
His positive influence will be missed.

Love and prayers to your family,

My uncle Steve was the measure of a man. He made sure my family had what we needed and made sure my mom ( his baby sister Lynn) and we had what we needed. He welcomed me into his home and showed me that men are strong and stay with their family's. Uncle Steve impacted my life and what I expected from people. I never got a chance to tell him this. I'm so sorry for your loss. I pray you will always smile at the end of your tears and remember we were blessed to have known him. I love you.

Carolyn and family,

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dave. He was a great friend and neighbor. Him and Carolyn were some of the first people to welcome me into my house about twenty two years ago. Their was a group of people to welcome me when the moving van pulled away from my house in December of 1994. He told me that he hoped his family and me would be good friends. He was a kind and gentle man and a great bishop. I enjoyed seeing him and Carolyn the last time I saw them
about two years ago. He stands as a great example of what it means to care about other people.

Sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He was a good neighbor and a great counselor who could also find rich, poetic words to bless the members of the ward.

Dave was the Principal at Granger High School when I retired from teaching in 1999. He gave me a pleasant send off as I went on a mission for the LDS Church. He was also the Principal for two of my children who attended that school. My son James was a Student Body Officer at Granger and had many occasions to meet with Dave in that capacity. I always found Dave to be open, honest and willing to listen to the point of view of his teachers. He had his own internal compass and always steered a course he felt was right and correct. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family. I know what a trial diabetes and parkinson's disease can be. He was a great leader and will be missed by many people who knew and loved him.

Carolyn and family,
We are saddened to hear the passing of Dave, he was a great friend and neighbor. One of our favorite memories is our wedding day when he was bishop and performed our wedding ceremony. Dave brought such warmth, love, and humor to a day we will not forget. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

We ran into Dave & Carolyn when we were looking to purchase our home last year. Dave was in a wheelchair due to Parkinsons but my husband recognized him right off. You see they went to High School together and were both on the wrestling team. Talking with Dave, he still possessed the same wit, humor and optimisim. We had another connection as we ran into Dave several times in the 90's when our son wrestled for Granger High School and he was Principal there. He always supported the kids like good Principals do and remembered our son by name. We ended up becoming neighbors this last year and Carolyn & I through that connection became walking partners & friends. We shared many heartfelt talks. It has been a difficult year for them and I know Carolyn will miss him beyound words and our hearts go out to her & her family. His memories are the legacy of his love and may your faith sustain you.

Dave was so kind to me when he was principal at Granger HS where I still teach. He was a big man and always weighed his words before he spoke, so to some he was intimidating. I learned pretty fast that he was a big teddy-bear. Of course he meant business, but he had a giant heart. I learned to love and respect this man. He was a giant of a soul!

My love, thoughts, and prayers are with the Steven's Family at this time.

Bishop Stevens was the Bishop of my youth and is the Father of my best friend. I spent a lot of time in his home. He always made me feel welcomed and wanted. We had fun discussions and he let me borrow every single one of his copies in the work and the glory series. His presence was strong and commanding but I always felt his love and sincerity. I remember in one of my Bishop interviews he taught me he didn't believe in luck. He believed in blessings and those blessings came from a loving Heavenly Father. I always felt he was proud of me and loved me no matter what. I am eternally grateful for the good influence he had in my life and will hold many precious memories of him close to my heart. I know he will be near his family as he continues the work he has to do on the other side of the veil.

Steve was quite a guy to say the least. I'm proud to be in the same family as he is. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Carolyn. Love to all of you, Aunt Verlene

David was a friend and mentor. I always be in debt to him for his counsel and friendly demeanor with me. I really got to know him on a educational trip to Virginia in 1991. He inspired me to get involved with administration in Granite School District. I actually first met him in 1973 in the Popular Grove area when we both were recently married. His children, Jennifer and David were students of mine and were upstanding individuals who represented their parents well. David will be missed and will always have a special place in my memories.

My best memory of Steve was when Eric took me to my first Stevens reunion at Aunt Karyn's in CA. A few of us were up late the first night having root beer floats with Karyn in her kitchen. I had just taken a big swig of my float when Karyn said to Steve "Would you like some more Steve?" and he said, "No, I have enough Steve thank you very much." Needless to say I shared my float with everyone within "spitting" distance that night!

I have many fond memories of Bishop Stevens and all of the family. What a beautiful voice Carolyn had and so willing to share her talents.Visiting their family was a highlight of the month for my husband, Wayne. I remember the sacrifice he made to speak at Wayne's memorial service as it was the first day of deer hunt. Any hunter knows what a sacrifice that was !I love this family. Death is not the end but a step in the path of our progression back to our home in heaven.

David and I first met when I was teaching and he always had something good to say about people. He was not a wishy-washy man. He knew what was right in almost every situation. Our daughter's looked up to Principal Stevens as I did and we are saddened by his loss. May God comfort each of you as you fight on through this life without him. I believe I knew your father and husband 50 years ago. I took basic combat training in the summer of 1964 and your dad was in our unit at Fort Polk, La. That summer in La. it was 100 degrees hot and 98 % humid. His picture is in my army yearbook. He was one of the mormon boys from Utah. Then when I left on an LDS mission in April 1965, to my surprise he and a few others from the army, met again in the MTC-then located in Salt Lake City on the corner of Main and North Temple. I was surprised to see him again. He is in the group missionary picture of 4-28-65. Your father was a fine person and a great person to know and associate with. My sincere condolences to each of you on your loss.

I remember when our family first moved to Taylorsville. I can't remember the reason why I was meeting with Bishop Stevens, but he stood about 6 foot 4 inches and was very intimidating. The first time I went to his office, I started talking, as usual. Bishop Stevens just sat in his chair with his arms folded and didn't say anything. Of course, I talked more and the more I talked the more I squirmed. I didn't know how to react to him. After quite a while Bishop Stevens started laughing. I could just see what he would do with his students. I grew to love this man and love the influence he had on my children. I am sure he also had quite an influence on his students. To those of his family, I love you all and send you our condolences and peace. I can just imagine what he is doing on the other side. Love you all

You Did so very much for me, through good times and some of the very hardest times of my life! I don't know what I would have done without You! I never got to properly thank you. But during this time of tears and sadness over our loss of you, I oddly now feel that you know what is in my Heart! No one can take your place in any way. I am happy you are no longer in pain, but sad you have left us. Please look in on us from time to time if allowed, and I hope to be good enough to see you again some day when I cross over! ALL my Love Big Dave! Love Heidi
