David West Obituary

11/10/1937 ~ 7/13/2016
David Wilford West passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday July 13, 2016 with his loving sons at his side.
David was born November 10, 1937 to Fredric William and Maria Smit West who made their home in Emigration Canyon in Salt Lake City Utah. He attended Granite High School before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served as an Electrician's Mate on an ice breaker called the USS Staten Island. He was also stationed aboard a troop transport ship. He was given an honorable medical discharge due to an injury he received in the service.
In 1956 he met Sylvia Marchant, whom he would court until they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on December 2, 1960. They moved many times in the first years of their marriage until they purchased their home in Murray in 1968 where they would remain the rest of their lives. It was there that they raised their two sons.
Dave had many jobs through the years. Some of the most notable are: Lakeshore Bus Company where he was both a driver and a mechanic and Utah Transit Authority where he was a mechanic and machinist. He was a master mechanic and a professional driver. He drove everything from busses to 18 wheelers. He later worked for Autozone in customer service and merchandising positions.
Dave was warm and genuine and easily made friends wherever he went. He would go out of his way to help and serve others. He was a member of the Midvale Lions Club for many years. He served in several positions, including club president.
His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved them dearly and treasured the time he spent with them.
David is survived by his sons, Paul D. West and Raymond D. West; daughter-in-law Tracy West; grandchildren; Luke C. West and Hailey R. West; sister Shirley West Jensen. He is preceded in death by his parents; spouse Sylvia M. West; siblings, Fredric W. West Jr., Joanne West Richmond and Dorcas Gay West.
David has selflessly donated his body to medical science. This will preclude a viewing and interment. We will have a celebration of his life Thursday July 21, 2016 beginning at 7:00 p.m. This will be at the church located at 6300 S. 300 E. Murray, Utah (Belview Ward).
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at St. Mark's Hospital and Community Nursing Services for the excellent care they provided.

Dear Paul and Raymond,

I have known your father since 1955-56. He used to tell me how to cook chicken in pots. He'd tell me first use a little pot, then a big little pot and so forth. It would go on and on and on in southern drawl.

I so appreciate David taken such good care of Sylvia when she was pretty much homebound. He became quite a bargain shopper.

I will say I would have given a million to see your mother's face when David showed up in Paradise.

Love you both,

Aunt Kathleen

Ray I am sorry for your loss and hope you will draw support from the many friends you have in the neighborhood due to your deep roots and the relationship that you father established here throughout the years he and Sylvia lived here.
