Donald Doty Obituary

Donald Benjamin Doty, M.D., died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on June 26, 2019, after a short but courageous battle with non-small cell adenocarcinoma (lung cancer). Don was born September 9, 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the middle child of Benjamin McCarrey Doty and Mary Leona Dunn. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Don's parents relocated the family from Oahu to Hollywood, California, where Don grew up and graduated from North Hollywood High School. Don did his undergraduate studies at UCLA, and then attended Stanford Medical School, where he received his medical doctor degree in 1962.
On June 23, 1961, just prior to his final year of medical school, Don married the love of his life, Cheryl Jean Killpack, in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Don and Cheryl were inseparable throughout their lives, and recently celebrated their 58th anniversary. Upon his graduation from Stanford, Don and Cheryl returned to southern California, where Don completed his general surgery residency at the University of Southern California County General Hospital in Los Angeles. Don then served as a Major in the United States Army Medical Corps at the height of the Vietnam War. Don was initially stationed for a short time at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Maryland, and was subsequently called up to serve a 6-month tour of duty in Vietnam from January to July 1968. During his tour of duty in Vietnam, Don saved the lives of many American soldiers on the operating tables of Army field hospitals in combat zones, and for his efforts, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces.
Following his honorable discharge from the military, Don and Cheryl moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where Don completed his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Alabama. In 1971, Don and Cheryl moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where Don joined the cardiothoracic surgery department at the University of Iowa Hospital. Over the next 11 years, Don became a world-renowned expert in pediatric heart surgery, and enjoyed his time researching, publishing, and teaching residents. In 1983, Don and Cheryl moved to Bountiful, Utah, and for the next 23 years Don practiced cardiac surgery at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, during which time he published numerous scholarly articles and five books. Don also generously gave of himself, making multiple trips to China, sponsored by the American Heart Association, to train Chinese physicians in the techniques of heart surgery.
Anyone close to Don knew that he was always humble in his accomplishments, that he always gave credit to his Heavenly Father for his gifts and talents, and that he always placed his Savior Jesus Christ at the center of his life. Don was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in many Church callings and assignments, including Stake President of the Cedar Rapids, Iowa Stake, Bishop, Regional Representative, and Area Authority Seventy. He was also instrumental in getting the Mormon Handcart Park in Iowa City identified and recognized as an official Church historical site.
Don retired from his surgery practice on December 31, 2004, and was immediately called by Elder Russell Ballard and Elder Russell Nelson to serve as the chairman of Health Services for the Missionary Department of the Church. Don and Cheryl served in that capacity for 9 years, during which time they oversaw medical services and treatment for tens of thousands of missionaries throughout the world. In recognition of this dedicated and selfless service, Don was awarded a Doctor of Science and Christian Service degree, Honoris Causa, from Brigham Young University in 2015.
Don had many interests, including teaching, writing, traveling, running, skiing, bicycling, cruising, and photography. Most of these activities Don enjoyed with his family, which was always his biggest priority. He was completely devoted to his wife Cheryl, his two sons, David and John, and his six grandchildren. Many of our most cherished memories are those spent with Don attending swim meets, biking, backpacking in the Wind Rivers, cheering at Iowa and BYU games, and hiking the fields and forests at the family ranch in Bear Lake.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings George Richard Doty and Mary Ann (Doty) Erickson. He is survived by his wife Cheryl, sons David (Rori) and John (Kristy), and his six grandchildren (Shannon (Colby) Hall, Mark, Blake, Grant, Madeline, Ainsley).
At his request there will not be a funeral, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Perpetual Education Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (801-356-5198) or the Intermountain Research & Medical Foundation (801-507-2040). Interment at Memorial Estates Lakeview Cemetery, Bountiful, Utah.
The family expresses our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Thomas Boud, Dr. Clarke Low, Dr. George Cannon, Dr. Mark Ott, the nurses and staff of Infusion Services at Intermountain Medical Center, and Intermountain Hospice, for the loving and dedicated care they provided to Don.
"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31).

I was called to the medical advisor for the 18 missions of the North America Southwest Area of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints under Dr. Doty. He was a great mentor. One young elder in the Houston Mission fell off his bike and was hospitalized. He was as diagnosed with valve destroying bacterial endocarditis. Although there were world famous cardio thoracic surgical centers in Houston the family insisted the young man be returned to Salt Lake City- the only problem was that no airlines would accept him. So the family insisted to come down and drive him home. Dr. Doty helped me explain the risks involved. They decided to drive him anyway. Cheryl helped us arrange immediate admission to LDS hospital where Don arranged for immediate valve replacement. Real leadership! I loved this guy. Dr. Ed Smith (Arizona)

He saved my life. Because of his blessed hands, I have lived 22 years more than I had before he fixed my heart. I have a child because he fixed my heart. I have his awesome work in my heart, and I depend on the awesome work he did on my heart every day I wake up alive. He is, no doubt, in a wonderful, blessed place.

Dr. Doty was my surgeon when I was one years old. That was in April 1974. I had double outlet syndrome and transposition of the greater vessel. I recently was reading my operative reports and was amazed with his talent and attribute my life to him. I was sorry to hear about his passing but wanted to share my gratitude to his family. I i´ve been in the United States Navy for 24 years and loved reading his biography and learning about his time as a military physician as well. I´m currently the executive officer on the USNS MERCY hospital ship and would never be here if it were not for his experience and expertise. I love that unbeknownst to be I followed him into Military Medicine...I also worked at Walter Reed for a bit!
I am so grateful every day for Dr. Doty! My mom talked about him often as I grew up and always reminded me that we had him to thank for each day I have on earth!
Thank you Dr. Doty!

I`m sorry to hear about Dr. Doty's passing.
I was studying heart surgery under his guidance in 1988. I was an international student from Osaka, Japan.
I remember his surgical skill, deep medical knowledge and humanity. I also have seen his wife Cheryl and his son David (when he is a boy).
Many memories of my time in SLC have been revived.

Belated my condolences to his family.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing last year of Dr. Don Doty. I didn't have much contact with him after he retired from surgery but all these years later still consider him a major influence in my life. I got to know Dr. Doty as a sales representative for medical devices used by him to do heart surgery at LDS Hospital. He was a true leader in his field of Cardiovascular surgery and was held in very high regard by surgeons all over the world. He was an impressive man. His influence and impact on people was immeasurable. Whenever I was around him I felt I was around someone on a higher plane...a higher level. A higher level of accomplishments, understanding, knowledge and experience. There was something about him that made me feel I was in the presence of someone very special. For that I am so grateful to have known him. God bless the Doty family, his wife Cheryl and sons David and John. Your husband and father will never be forgotten.

I loved working with Dr. Doty on C-33 at the University of Iowa. He was such a kind, gentle man and outstanding surgeon. I remember hearing residents speak in awe of his skills in the OR.
And then we got to experience his skills first hand, when our daughter Janelle was born with Transposition of the Great Vessels. He operated on her when she was 5 1/2 months old and weighed 11 pounds. We have kept him updated over the years of her progress. He always called her the poster child of Transposition. (she had the Senning procedure) I remember talking to him after her surgery which went very well, and he gave the credit to the Lord, his helper. Such a humble man. He will truly be missed.

I just found out today that my mentor and hero passed away 7 months ago. I attribute my 41 years of a very successful cardiovascular and thoracic surgery practice to Don Doty.. I trained with him at the University of Iowa 1976-78 and last saw him in Iowa City in Oct. 2018 at the 70th anniversary of the training program.
He was an excellent surgeon, teacher, mentor and person. He will be missed greatly by all.

I was a cath lab tech at the University of Iowa which is where I first met Dr. Doty. He treated everyone respectfully including a new tech (me). He was highly regarded by all at the University for his wonderful skills and ability to operate on tiny babies.

A life well lived.

I worked closely with Dr. Doty when he served as chair of the Missionary Department Health Services. Cheryl and he contributed so much to the health and well being of missionaries throughout the world. They served in that capacity for 9 years. When they were released it took a General Authority and two other physicians to do what Dr. Doty and Cheryl did. He will be missed!

I'm Sorry to hear of Dr. Doty's passing. I met him in the LDS Hospital Emergency Room. He operated on my heart in late 2004. I often think I was one of his last patients since he went to Hong Kong for some kind of Medical Convention and I saw him in his office when he returned,in mid-December. He told me he was retiring at the end of the month. My condolences to the family, especially John who also helped me in the Recovery Room after my surgery. Both Don and John were the kindest, most caring people I've ever met.
P.S. It's still ticking. God Bless Don and his entire family. I'll never forget.

I was a young married man with a 1 year old son when I first met Dr. Doty. I was i congestive heart failure, fighting for my life. My sweetheart Sarah and I had visited several heart surgeons trying to figure out what to do. We visited Dr. Doty last, when he walked in the room with his perfect white tennis shoes and long white lab coat I thought he was an angel. This feeling of calm and peace overcame Sarah and me. I thought to myself, " I am not going to die, this special man will save my life". When we told Dr. Doty that we had just opened a restaurant and did not have health insurance, he quickly stated, "you will not get a bill from me, let's get you feeling better". My infant son will be returning home from his mission in a few weeks. I am so grateful to have known Dr. Doty and call him my friend. Dave Tuomisto

It was such a privilege to get to know you and Dr. Doty at the hospital. You both exercised such faith and positivity through the brief cancer journey. I am so deeply saddened by his passing and will remember our conversations and your smiles. Each time I drive by the canyon I'll think of you both. You and your family are in my prayers and thoughts.

I have known Don from the beginning, when he and his family would visit our mutual grandparents, George E. and Elizabeth M. Doty, each summer in Richmond, Utah. My mother, Ruth Doty, is a sister to Don's father. As little kids, we young Doty cousins had a great time together. Don was always kind, friendly and helpful, but he also had a good imagination, plenty of curiosity, and was fun to be around. We looked forward to each summer.

We are sorry to see him go, but since leaving is the better option, we, like all who knew this fine man (and great young cousin), will be most delighted to greet him, free of pain and mortal sorrows in the wonderful world to come. Our best wishes and blessings to Cheryl and all the family, who know and love Don better than anyone--and he feels the same to them.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Olson Wach

Many more words could have been written about this great and accomplished man. He was an icon and an inspiration to me and to many, many people. As a friend and neighbor, I will miss him, and will miss our brief talks in front of our home when Cheryl and Don would stop for a quick chat while on their walk through the neighborhood. My heart and condolences go out to you, Cheryl, and to your family. This is a man whose life was well-lived and well-loved.
