Dwight Hooker Obituary

1928 ~ 2015
Dwight Hooker, a photographer and architect who gained national prominence as a photographer for Playboy Magazine during the 1970s, and later in life designed unique and expansive mountain homes in Sundance, Utah, died Saturday, January 3, 2015, in Michigan. He was 86 years old.
Born in Albany, New York, on June 22, 1928, Dwight was raised in Dearborn, Michigan, and learned photography in the Navy. After his military service, he began working as a professional portrait photographer becoming part of a group of Detroit-area artists who remained lifelong friends.
Dwight eventually owned and operated Holland-Stevens Studio in Detroit prior to moving to Chicago to work for Playboy in 1968. His experience as a portrait photographer helped him become one of the magazine's main "gatefold" photographers, doing such famous versions of the trademark feature as the "Twins" and "Front and Back" center-fold photographs.
After Playboy, Dwight changed careers and moved to Sundance, Utah, to build luxury homes and return to school to become an architect. Yet, for most people who knew him, he continued to personify the Playboy image being handsome and athletic, charismatic and charming. He was married six times.
After suffering a major stroke in 1993, Dwight continued his lifestyle as much as possible, without complaint. Dwight moved back to the Detroit area 10 years ago where he resided with his wife Betty at Henry Ford Retirement Village. He continued to make friends with his keen mind and wit. Dwight was the most loving of fathers and faithful of friends. He will be missed and remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him.
Dwight is survived by his wife, Betty; sister, Mary; his five children: Linda (Gary), Laura, Cindy (Bob), Kevin (Bonnie), and Heidi (David); his 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Chuck; sister, Sheila; and son, Tommy.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, January 10, from 12 - 3pm at the Evans and Early Funeral Home, 574 East 100 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Was looking for an old Playboy Club photo for my Facebook Easter profile and found one. Taken by Dwight Hooker in 1968, I'd guess. I was curious what he was up to and happened onto his obituary. Sorry to see this. My condolences to the family.

I had the good fortune of working with Dwight as a model. I was new to the business and he taught me how to handle myself professionally. I will always be grateful to him for his guidance and kindness. My heart goes out to the family.

My recollections of Dwight are only positive. I don't believe I ever heard him say anything unkind about anyone. I always enjoyed his intelligent and interesting perspective on things and admired his ability to spin a great tale. So sorry I was out of town for his service. I wish only the best to his family and friends.

I will always remember Dwight as we worked together on projects at Sundance. He was kind and enjoyable to work with. He will remain forever in my memory as a friend and working companion.

Mighty Dwighty, "you were man, a great big man." You filled my life. Because of you, families make memoires in comfortable, happy, well-designed homes. You taught me everything. You are my heart. I will keep the shrine and the memories. Love, Julie

Had a few visits with Dwight at Utah home when I lived in area many years ago. His High Altitude High Rises in Stewart and Redford lands certainly increased interest in area homesteaded by my relatives and ancestors. Best wishes to his family.
