Edwin Pettit Obituary

1937 ~ 2016
Edwin Eugene Pettit, born Dec. 16, 1937 to Hermel Lyle Pettit and Mae Ball in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Jeannene Holm on December 17, 1959.
Ed's family lived in Pocatello, ID when he was a small child, and Idaho Falls as a teenager. Ed graduated from Brigham Young University and Brigham Young 855 Det. Air Force ROTC in Aug. 1960 with a regular commission. This was the first class of Air Force 855 Det. Air Force ROTC.
While waiting for his entrance into the Air Force Military he worked as an accountant at Boeing Air Craft Co. in Seattle, WA. His Air Force career spanned 20 ½ years. He was stationed at Williams Air Force Base - AZ, Edward Air Force Base - CA., Ellsworth Air Force Base - SD. He was in the first group of officers to join the Minute Man Missile Program at Ellsworth A.F.B. While at Ellsworth A.F.B. he received his MBA at Ohio State University. He was a missile crew officer on Airborne flights, Looking Glass, and an Air Force Base Missile Inspector at Strategic Air Command Center in Omaha, NE. He was also stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, AL., and Base Headquarters Command and Staff - Minot, ND.
After retiring from the Air Force, he made a second career in Business and Accounting. He and his family moved to Orem, Utah to be near family in 1981. After retiring from the business field, he enjoyed traveling, especially to the Tetons, Wyoming, London, England and Israel.
He was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Having pioneer ancestors who crossed the plains from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City. He served in the Timpanogos Temple, an honor he so loved and was proud of, until he contracted West Nile Virus in 2008. Contraction of West Nile led to many health problems, and he suffered many strokes, 3 of which were debilitating.
Ed was a talented man - when he was younger he learned to fly, he loved fixing cars, house painting, and working on the family home. The only repairmen needed in our home were plumbers and electricians. Ed loved to work and fix up the home.
He is survived by his wife Jeannene Holm Pettit of 57 years. Children: Sharlie Chase (Lynn), Brian Pettit, Elaine Pettit, and Denise McNair (Bryan), 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, step mother, 2 brothers, a sister, a step brother and a step sister.
The family wishes to thank the CNS Hospice of Utah for their loving care these last few months, his hospice nurse Kerri and his CNA Daniel for all their help. We would also like to thank the Brigham Young University Air Force ROTC 855 Det. for coming to our home to honor Ed as a military veteran. Having the flag ceremony as well as presenting him the flag and a certificate of appreciation, a veteran pin, and a coin for the 855 Det. BYU Air Force.
