GARY ALBISTON Obituary

Gary Joseph Albiston 1951 ~ 2010 Gary Joseph Albiston, born October 16, 1951, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2010. He was the second child born to Mary Evelyn Cronquist and Gilbert Joseph Albiston. He grew up in the state of Colorado with his two sisters, Gladys and Beverly. After graduating from high school, he served a mission for the LDS church in Pennsylvania. He went to school to become an accountant. He met his wife, Rebecca, in Washington and they were married in the Manti Temple on December 4, 1973. He was the father of eight kids: Julie, Laura (Brice), Nathan (Naomi), Spencer (Diane), Ryan (Stephanie), Megan, Jacob, Katelyn, and his bonus boy, Ray. Gary was heavily involved in Scouting and earned his Silver Beaver Award in September 2009. Gary especially enjoyed his work at the LDS Humanitarian Center, where he was the one who told the jokes. He loved the people he worked with and considered them an extension of his family. Throughout his lifetime he served in numerous callings in the Church and was currently serving in the Young Men's Presidency. Gary loved the outdoors, his horses, and was looking forward to having another son serve a mission this fall. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, his eight children, and eight and 1/2 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson. A viewing will be held Sunday, May 9 from 6-8 p.m. at Anderson & Sons Mortuary (49 E. 100 N., American Fork). Funeral services will be held Monday, May 10 at 11 a.m. at the American Fork West Stake Center (500 N. 700 W., American Fork). A brief visitation will be held prior to the service (9:45-10:45 a.m.). Interment will be at the American Fork Cemetery following the services. Online condolences may be sent at andersonmortuary.com

Gary was my scoutmaster when I was 13, in 1987. He bravely took about 8 of us on a week long camp to the Boulder Mountains in southern Utah, and somehow kept all of us safe and alive despite our juvenile behavior.

His influence was vital in my becoming an Eagle scout, an achievement I have been grateful for my entire life.

He was a great man who taught me many lessons back then. I am grateful that I took the time a couple of years ago to thank him for his great influence on me. How sudden his passing, and how great a reminder of the worth of a soul.

I will never forget the many things he taught me about life and how to live it right.

Dear Albiston family, It's hard to find the right words to convey sympathy and speak to what a wonderful man Gary was. I worked with Gary for many years at First Security Bank, the last several years as a fellow manager. He made me laugh. Sometimes I just didn’t get it but he made me laugh anyway because he laughed. His humor and encouragement got us all through frustrating times. When I hear John Denver, I think of Gary because he really enjoyed listening to his music. He found usefulness out of the most unusual things, such as making a gun case out of an old computer main frame tower. He was a good friend who inspired me to do better. He often spoke of his family, with love and pride. He kept me reminded there is something beyond what life hands us here. I’m so very sorry for your loss. He will be missed.

We are all deeply sadden by the passing of Gary. He was truly one of the elect and will be sorely missed. May the Lord pour out His blessings upon you and your family now and forever. Words can not come close to explaining the friendship and love Gary showed to our family and the spot he will leave in our hearts will always feel hollow. If there is anything we can do to ease your burden at this time or at anytime please don't hesitate to call upon us. Through serving you Rebecca and your family perhaps we can repay all the service, love, and freindship Gary showed to us over the years. May the Lord bless you always. -- Paul and Shauna Strong and family

Dear Albiston family,
I was devastated to hear of Gary's passing. He came to our home not a month ago to do taxes for us, just as he has done for so many years. I will be lost without him to get me through next year. I thought of him as more of my friend than my accountant, and looked forward to chatting with him about "The West Wing" each year, even after it was off the air. I am so sorry for your loss. I thank you for all the good service he has offered through out his life.

So sorry to hear about Gary's passing. My dad passed away at the end of January. I love these words from Elder Maxwell, "Death is a mere comma, not an exclamation point!" (Ensign, May 1983, 11)

May the peace and healing come quickly.

Rebecca and family...so sorry to hear about Gary's passing. He was a great man. The time my family spent in your ward was special. Gary always made time for others. I'll forever remember the time we spent with the young men at Fish Lake and hiking down into Calf Creek Falls on an outing. He was always enthusiastic about life. God bless you at this difficult time...Jason Hall

Dear Rebecca and family, how very sad and shocking for all of you to lose such a wonderful person from your lives. I had the pleasure of working with Gary at FSB. He was like a brother, always joking and teasing but so supportive. He could lighten up the worst situations and remind us the worst is not really all that bad. He was the best Santa, you forgot the suit hung on him because of his lively spirit and enthusiasm. His FSB family loved him and are better having known him. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

I had the pleasure to serve in an Elders Quorum Presidency, as well as work with Gary. What a remarkable man! I am glad the obituary mentioned his sense of humor. What a dry wit he had. We will enjoy that in the Celestial Kingdom, where he is certain to go. But it wasn't all fun and games. Gary dug in and worked had with President Hadfield and myself. His spiritual side was as massive as his wit.

I will miss Gary. My heart goes out to all the Albiston family and offer my heartfelt condolences in this temporary separation in the eternal perspective.
