Gary Trevino Obituary

Gary Lynn Trevino, our beloved son, father, brother, uncle and friend, passed away on June 28, 2014, at his home in Salt Lake City from heart failure.
Gary was born in Bountiful, Utah, to Allen Ray and Karen Lee Ferguson Trevino on November 19, 1965, the third of eight children. He grew up skiing at Park City, camping around Moab and boating on Lake Powell, Bear Lake and Pineview Reservoir and became an avid golfer. He spent many early morning hours with his brothers Bob and Jim running a successful paper route, delivering 180 papers a day.
In his early teens Gary discovered he had a knack for cooking at his first job making pizzas at The Mushroom Company. He enjoyed a long and varied career as a chef and manager, working at country clubs, restaurants and institutions in Utah, California, Oregon and New Hampshire.
Also in his early teens, he developed a love of rock music. He learned to play the guitar and with his closest friends formed a band, The Hicks, which eventually morphed into Scythe. His passion for rock was reflected in his hairstyle. If he wasn't emulating Robert Plant's curls, he was proudly wearing a mullet - indifferent to the broader world's opinion of its hipness.
He had a great sense of humor, always teasing and joking and making us laugh. Many of us were given our nicknames by him. He referred to himself as G-Man or simply The G and we all got on board.
Dogs and small children adored being around Gary. He loved taking his dogs, especially Yukon, Ruca and Tank, up Mill Creek Canyon. His nieces and nephews gravitated to him because he had a gift for connecting with them on their level and making them laugh. But by far his happiest times were spent with his son Troy in the mountains of Utah and at the beaches of New Hampshire and California.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Karen, and close friend Troy Robert Nelson. He is survived by his father Allen (Diane) of SLC; his son Troy Sheppard of Hudson, NH; his siblings Bob of SLC; James of SLC; Carmen of London, UK; Karalee (Sean Skamnes) of SLC; Sarah (Dave Pearce) of Portland, OR; Dave (Laura) of Bountiful; Scott of Los Angeles; and 11 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 11:00 am at the East Mill Creek 11th Ward, 2702 East Evergreen Ave (3435 S.), where friends and family can visit 9:30-10:30 am prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Elysian Burial Gardens.
