Gene Matthews Obituary

Gene Matthews 1925 ~ 2005 Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Gene Matthews passed away September 18, 2005, after a lingering illness. He was born August 6, 1925 in Bennion, Utah to Orval and Vera Matthews. He served his country during World War II in the US Navy. He married June Westbrook, August 13, 1946. Together they raised four children. Gene worked as a contractor and plumber and belonged to the former Local 57 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union. Gene was an avid golfer and enjoyed trips to Wendover. He was the kind of man that always gave of himself and his time to others, and was the first to offer help to anyone who needed it. Most of all, Gene was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Gene is survived by his wife of 59 years, June; children, Dale (De Lene), Lynn (Cheryl), Sandra Boyce, Dave (Michele); grandchildren, Michael, Heather, Brittany, Brynn, Jake, Clint, Christy, Oakley, Stevie, Chloe; four great-grandchildren; brother, Max Matthews and sister, Nina Glibbery. Preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Jason. Graveside services will be held Friday, September 23rd, 11:00 a.m. at Redwood Memorial Cemetery, 6500 S. Redwood Rd. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services in the mortuary.

To June, Dave and Michelle,

I know there are not any words that will make you feel any better right now. Just know that it does get easier as time goes by. Try to be there for each other in this time of sorrow and take the comfort each one of you can give each other. That is the only thing that can relieve some of the pain. Don't hold back and stay within yourself. That is the worst thing you can do. Holding it inside does nothing to help you or your family. Hug each other often and give each other space.
