George Cannon Obituary

George Nibley Cannon 1919 ~ 2007 George Nibley Cannon, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and companion, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2007, in Salt Lake City, at the age of 88 of natural causes.George is survived by his devoted companion, Bette Jean Sage, his sister, Teddy Stringham, brother, Charles Cannon, and by three sons, 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, who will miss him greatly. George was preceded in death by his Mother, Father, brother Morris Cannon, his daughter, Joan Cannon Curtis, and his grandson, Peter Cannon Curtis. George was greatly blessed with a warm heart, a wonderfully positive attitude, and an unselfish love and devotion for family and friends. George was born in Salt Lake City on February 23, 1919, to George Mouseley Cannon, Jr. and Edna Nibley Cannon. George attended East High School, and in 1938, was called to serve in the French/Belgium Mission. When the war broke out in 1939, he was transferred to the New England Mission, serving in Rhode Island. After graduating from the University of Utah, George received an MBA from Harvard University in 1943. Following graduation, he joined the Army Air Corps, serving in New York City and Guam. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Captain. In 1948, George married Afton Critchlow Ryberg in the Salt Lake Temple. They had three sons, George (Judd), Eric and Bruce, and one lovely daughter, Joan (who passed away in 2006). A dedicated father, George enjoyed taking them on business trips, family vacations, and visits to the Cannon family cabin on Thousand Peaks Ranch where they would all go on long horseback rides together. George moved to Phoenix in 1981. Since 1987, George has been sharing his life with Bette Jeanne Sage, residing primarily in Palos Verdes, CA, until they moved to Salt Lake City in August 2006. Memorial services will be held at Larkin Mortuary (260 East South Temple) on Wed., October 24th. A viewing will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 12 noon. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawns.
