George Stromberg Obituary

August 20, 1926 ~ January 12, 2016
George Thomas Stromberg, prominent businessman and loving husband and father, passed away in Salt Lake City, UT on January 12, 2016, surrounded by his family. He was born on August 20, 1926, in Salt Lake City, UT to Verner Lorenzo Stromberg and Bertha Catmull Stromberg.
George spent most of his early years in Ogden, UT and graduated from Ogden High School in 1944. He was drafted into the infantry two weeks after his graduation and served in Europe during World War II. He also spent a year in Officer Training at Amherst College and was awarded an appointment to West Point. George later attended Weber State College and the University of Utah, where he met his wife Norma Clark. Shortly after marrying, Norma and George moved to Cambridge, MA, where he earned an MBA at the Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1954.
George took his first job at Fireman's Fund in San Francisco, CA as a securities analyst and then joined Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith. He became the top institutional stockbroker at Merrill in San Francisco and later took the position of Manager of Merrill's Salt Lake City office in 1965, a position he held for many years, after which he opened the local Kidder Peabody and Smith Barney offices. He was a leader in the securities industry until his retirement. He was a member of the Salt Lake Rotary Club and Alta Club and served in multiple business and civic capacities, including as a Director of Davis County Bank, on the Board of Advisors of the University of Utah Business School and on the Board of the Utah Symphony.
A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, George served in the Northwest States Mission. He held the position of High Priest and served in various callings, including as a counselor in the bishopric of the Palo Alto Ward, high councilman, Elders Quorum President and Sunday School teacher. He was a true believer.
George moved gracefully through the phases of his life. Even while a prominent businessman, he kept a beautiful and artistic garden that won various awards and was the envy of his neighbors. In the later years of his life, his wife of 63 years, his children, grandchildren and his garden remained his passions. He maintained a very close and personal relationship with each of his grandchildren.
He was a smart, honest and loving person. When the time came, he was a generous organ donor. The world is a better place because of George.
George is survived by his wife, Norma Clark Stromberg; his three children, George Thomas Stromberg, Jr. (Lorie), Clark Howard Stromberg (Laurel) and Ann Stromberg Brown (Scott); eight grandchildren, Stephen Stromberg, Elizabeth Chernia (Tomer), Christopher Stromberg (Megan), Michael Stromberg, Melissa Wood (Chris), Thomas Brown, Victoria Brown and Mitchell Brown; and two great grandchildren, Kamden Wood and Brielle Wood.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 18, 2016, at the Monument Park 17th Ward, 2795 Crestview Drive, Salt Lake City, UT. A viewing will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. the prior evening, Sunday, January 17, 2016, at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 South, Salt Lake City, UT. Interment will be at Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery adjacent to the Larkin Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in George's name to the University of Utah Health Sciences Department, 540 Arapeen Drive, Suite 120, Salt Lake City, UT 84108, (www.healthsciences.utah.edu/giving).

Norma and family, I'm so sorry to hear about George's passing.

I worked at Clark Learning Designs for Business in Salt Lake and he was such a kind and wonderful man.

It was always a great day to spend time at work with George and Norma. It's been 40 years since I left Clark Leaming to work at Mountain Bell but their their kindness and beautiful souls made me often think of them.

I hope to meet you once again my friend George.

George was a charming and excellent missionary in my branch in Oregon when I was a teenager. He was long remembered as having served with great enthusiasm and dedication and was much appreciated by the members there. My condolences to his loving family.
