Gordon Lund Obituary

Gordon Lee Lund 1919 ~ 2009 'Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings .... " Gordon Lee Lund, a renaissance man for the ages, and our respected, revered husband, father and grandfather passed away on Monday, January 26, 2009 at Highland Care Center of causes incident to age and pneumonia. His adored wife of 67 years, Lillie Daniels, who preceded him in death by a few hours came to escort him home. Theirs is a truly beautiful and sweet love story. Gordon was born on September 11, 1919 in Salt Lake City, Ut of Norwegian, Danish-English decent. His parents, Ruby Laverne Fredrickson, and Leander Emil Lund, passed away from an influenza pandemic when he was just 5-years-old. He was raised by his Lund grandparents in Salt Lake City. He and his brother Max loved the friends on Emerson Ave. In the Emerson Ward he met Lille and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 18, 1941. Gordon attended both East and West High School. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in accounting from Utah State University and earned a Law degree from Stanford Law School. Along the way he enlisted in the Air Force, earned his wings and was a fighter pilot instructor, a father to seven children and had a law practice in California with President Howard W. Hunter, became Bishop along with other callings for the LDS Church, was President of Pasadena Opera Company, and sang in many Grand Operas and local productions opera. He and his wife shared a passion for classical music, art, architecture, gardening, literature, travel, and inspiring mountain scenery. He remained active in the Air Force Reserve as a Pilot, and was a Judge Advocate, appearing before in U.S. Supreme Court. He retired as a Colonel. When he really "retired" he built Nodrog Castle at Sundance, took up oil painting and kept planning and building many inventions and beautiful creations. He most loved his calling as a sealer at the Jordan River Temple for 21 years, and was devoted in his testimony of Jesus Christ. As children we loved his beautiful baritone voice the most when he sang us lullabies. He took us fishing and skiing and taught us about work. His sometimes stern exterior hid the softest of hearts. Gordon is survived by his children; Jeffrey (Celeste), Michael (Jan), Randall (Gwen), Kristine, Deborah (Hal) Romrell, Daniel (Linda) and Jeremy. 28 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 31, 2009, 12:00 noon at the Brighton 12th Ward, 2925 E. Creek Road, (8000 S.) Friends may call Friday, January 30, 2009, at the Cannon Mortuary, 2460 E. Bengal Blvd., (7600 S.) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and the day of the service at the church, 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. Interment at Mountain View Memorial Estates. His last words to us were "Take care of each other... Let's get busy... Carry on." We love you, Dad! " ... And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space put out my hand and touched the face of God'.

We are sad for your loss but know that your parents are together.

Gordon was our first Bishop when we joined the church in 1967 in Arcadia, CA. In those days we attended church in the Monrovia building. We visited the Lunds in Salt Lake around 1970 and he and Lillie very graciously let us stay at their home. Gordon also took us for a drive and showed us Salt Lake City. They were very kind to us.

Gordon and Lillie were two the classiest people I know. When we moved to the Brighton 2nd ward 30 years ago they were one of the first to welcome us and invite us to be in the ward choir. I will never forget sitting in front of Gordon in church and having him "make the air with music ring". Two of God's choicest will surely be missed by all who knew them.

Gordon was my bishop in Arcadia in my preteen years. My mom passed away the same day as Gordon. My parents and the Lunds were close friends while they lived in Arcadia.

I, too, remember the Family Reunions in Arcadia. I also have memories of spending nights in their home with Tina (Kristine). My love goes out to the Family and I will remember you in my prayers.

I was privileged to have been close to Gordon's sister Anne Lund, a relative. My 5 daughters were lucky to have her as a wonderful great grandmother who they got to know well and love dearly. She spent most holidays with us. Indeed, She joined our family in a trip half way around the world. She often spoke of her love for and pride in her brother and his dear wife. Although we never met, I came to share that pride in our extended family. Their influence and good reputation reached further than one can ever know.

Most of our days are ordinary, with a certain sameness about them. Every once and a while we have special days, that stay with us through the years as a fond memory. One of those days for me was when Gordon married us for time and all eternity. Suddenly today is a little less bright. Two of the special people in our lives have gone ahead. Gordon, Lillie, well done good and faithful servants. You remain in our hearts. Gary & Pat Bloomquist

I was sad to hear of the passing of both Brother and Sister Lund. I have many wonderful memories of them as my family and I lived next door to them for many, many years. I will never forget that old, blue, car! I feel like I actually didn't know Brother Lund as well as I thought after reading this obituary. What an incredible man.

On a side note - Jeremy, thank you for being so great to us, and especially to my mom, while we lived on Dolphin Way! You are a great person.

Dear cousins We feel for you now but how lucky you were to have such wonderful parents. I know we were lucky to be related to you all. We remember our family reunions at your home in Arcadia at the swimming pool and visits to Nordog. We love looking at our photo album with all of us together. Your mon was so beautiful. We are looking forward to be with them in the not too far future. We are not too far behind them. Love to you all. Wish we could see you all but we are not able to drive too far in bad weather now. Dear Jeremy and sibs,

You know how much your folks meant to me and Frannie. They were like our parents/grandparents away from home. We enjoyed their hospitality and appreciated their friendship.
Gordon always ready with some sage advise mixed with a tad of humor, Lillie always helpful whenever I ran into a crossword clue that took me into anything Biblical. And she was always right on the money. (Who was Lot's wife?.eg. etc etc.)
My parents Bob and Olga send their love and prayers to you all.
They were so glad to have met them and spend an afternoon at Nodrog...moms talking family stuff, dads recounting their Air Force days. Dad always respected Gordon, even tho dad went to Cal and Gordon to Stanford, a gag they both enjoyed.
Your folks are together forever, as it should be. We are better off for having them in our lives.
God Bless you all.

Sorry to read of your loss, but such a blessing that they were not separated for any length of time. Your father was our lawyer for the adoption of our first son. Later when we moved to Arcadia, we found him to be the Bishop of the ward. We remember with fond memories our years in Arcadia, where Kline would also serve as the bishop. May the Lord comfort your family with the joy that comes with the knowledge of the purpose of life and the blessings that come from 'enduring to the end'.

Dear Lund Family:
I don't know you or your beloved parents, but reading about them made me want to be better and do more with my life. Your parents/grandparents sounded like wonderful people and it was so great that they passed within hours of each other. What a way to go! I am sure you will miss them, but they have gone on together to more joyous eternal experiences. God bless Them and God bless You!
