Gregory Skedros Obituary

Gregory James Skedros

1928 ~ 2022

On January 27th, 2022 we lost Gregory (93) to a short and unexpected illness complicated by advanced age. Gregory was born July 30, 1928 in Salt Lake City Utah to Greek immigrant parents. He learned his work ethic as a young boy helping his brother Constantine support their family after the passing of their father in 1940. He graduated in the first Pharmacy class at the University of Utah and served as a US Air Force officer in the Philippines during the Korean War. After returning home he married Jenny Pappas from Phoenix, Arizona. They were married in 1957 and started a family shortly thereafter. Gregory and Jenny moved to Bountiful in 1961 with their young family where Gregory opened Mountain View Pharmacy. His corner Drug Store became a fixture in the community and a haven for the young and old. His unique charm and charisma, as well as his true concern for his customers, created lifelong relationships that still exist today.

Gregory's life took an interesting twist at the age of 50, when he decided to open a Chinese restaurant. This bold decision stretched the family to its limits as Gregory continued to work the pharmacy while Jenny and his five children managed the Restaurant. Gregory's attention to detail and exceptional palate, including mastery of all sauces, were key in the early days at the restaurant. He inspired and mentored hundreds of young people who learned much by witnessing his impeccable work ethic and good humor. His ability to remember his customers names was legendary and a significant part of building his business. This labor of love went through many evolutions before becoming the renowned, iconic experience that it is today. "Mr. Mandarin" could be seen on a nightly basis talking with his customers, making sure they enjoyed their meals. He was the consummate host. Gracious, kind, and quick to give his customers dessert "on him".

His life in the Greek Orthodox Church was highlighted by commitment and service to his community. He and Jenny founded the Greek Festival in Salt Lake City which is considered by many a "bucket list" event, and also "The Taste of Greece", which served as a community gathering and fundraiser. He served for many years on the Parish Council and was president of the Holy Trinity Choir until his passing. He generously donated the lead gift for the Cornerstone Campaign to build a new Community Center downtown. He loved his Church and tirelessly worked to make a difference.

Gregory suffered one of the greatest tragedies of life when his 32 year old son died suddenly from a heart condition. Although this occurred 25 years ago, he never went a day where he didn't think of Anthony and what could have been.

He is survived by his children, Tykie (Georgette) Skedros, John (Maria) Skedros, Katina (Dave) Skedros- Temme, Angel (Paul) Manfredini, as well as his true joy in his later years, his grandchildren: Gregory, Katerina, Jenny, Sophia, Alex, Gigi, Athan, Kora, Jack and Henry.

Gregory is at peace. We all smile and feel his joy as he reunites with Mama and Andoni.

The family is very concerned about the safety of those wishing to pay their respects to Gregory, and respectfully asks for those attending these functions to be mindful of high health risk individuals who loved Greg and would like to pay their respects in an environment that is as safe as possible. Masks are strongly encouraged.

We would go to the Mandarin for Valentines Day dinner. Mr. Skedros always greeted us and was so kind to always treat us to dessert. He is fondly remembered.

When the Medical Center was new in Bountiful, we neigbor kids would walk through "the orchard" to buy candy bars and soda from the pharmacy. Greg Skedros was the pharmacist, and he was nicer to us than we deserved. Later he and Jenny - and my BJH friend Angel! - would employ multiple generations of my family at the Mandarin. When we'd eat there with my parents, he'd always come and visit with them. Such a warm man.

Greg was one of the finest men I've ever known. We have been good friends for over 76 years and I'm going to miss our chats. I was an usher at Jenny and Greg's wedding and he was my best man at my wedding. Love you my best friend and will miss you greatly.

Earlier this year I was reflecting to my sister Sandi what a good generous loving person your father was. He is a part of my earliest memories, he was so supportive of my father, and all my family. I remember my father taking Santa photos at the Pharmacy on 4th East and 9th North. I have always felt that our family was cared for by your Dad and Mom. My prayers are with your family. I will always know that I'm a better person having had my life influenced by Greg and Jeni Skedros.

I am so sorry for your loss. Greg was one of the kindest, most caring individuals I have ever known. I grew up going to his pharmacy with my parents and then visiting his restaurant anytime I came in to town. I have wonderful memories of him. He will be greatly missed. May his memory be eternal. Your father would always take a minute to shake my hand in church. You could read his thoughts through his eyes. What a wonderful man who leaves a legacy behind. He brought good to everything he touched. May his memory be eternal.

Greg was an amazing boss for a first job! He pushed me hard and helped to learn a great work ethic!
I loved to see him, all of the many years since I have worked there, and to have him ask (with a twinkle in his eye) are you ready to come back and work for me?

I have wonderful childhood memories of coming to the Mandarin with my parents Leon and Karen Peterson for many years as a young boy and teenager. Greg always greeted my mom and Dad as friends. I think my dad who was also a business owner and entrepreneur felt a special kinship with Greg. It made me feel special as a boy and even later in life to come in to the restaurant and have Greg treat me and my wife in the same manner.

We lost our father in 2020 after a long battle with Parkinson's. The loss is still fresh in all of our minds. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Skedros family at this time as you mourn the loss of your father. His is a life to be remembered and celebrated.

Best,
Barrett Peterson

Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. I imagine the men who've previously passed on are all sitting around drinking coffee and flirting with the waitresses. (My Dad, my Godfather Con, Andy Katsanevas, etc.)

Greg Skedros was larger than life. His kindness and soft demeanor was his trademark to us all. He used to drop fresh vegetables from his garden on my mom“s front porch. Never rang the Bell just would leave them there for my mom. She always commented on how wonderful he was. We all knew that having grown up with him and Jenny in our Greek community.
An Earth Angel has now earned his Heavenly Wings. You will be missed by so many but your memory is forever cemented in our hearts. So many Angels awaiting your arrival.
Soar high Greg and let your beautiful spirit shine down on us.

I loved our conversations when visiting the Mandarin over the past 40 years. We shared a love of good food. I traveled a lot and always tried to find the best Chinese restaurant in which ever city where I was working. Greg was always wanting to know what I had eaten and enjoyed. On one of these trips I was in San Fransico and had "Honey Walnut Shrimp". Greg said he was going to San Fransico and would check it out. About a month later he was proud to tell me that his version was this month's special. His was better and it started a copycat rendition in many Chinese restaurants in the city. I will miss my good friend. When we think of Greg passing it may come with a tear or two, but those tears will turn to smiles as we remember how kind and good he was.
