Irving Bodily Obituary

Irving Vance Bodily
1934 ~ 2015
Irving Vance Bodily, our "one of a kind", "kid at heart", son, husband, father, grandpa and brother has completed his 81 year life journey and has moved onto his new eternal adventure.
Born in Vernal, Utah, to Sterling and Reva Hall Bodily on September 5, 1934.
Shirley Abplanalp of Bingham Canyon, Utah, captured his heart. They married June 29, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple. They just celebrated 60 years together. They have resided in Kearns for 54 years, where they raised their seven children. They purchased a small farm in Murray, Utah, which has been a gathering place for family and friends, where many cherished memories have been made. He loved the red hills of Vernal, and passed that love onto his posterity, as he spent time with them hunting, camping, fishing and singing. He truly blessed the lives of his family with the selfless gift of his time and service. He worked and retired from the US Postal Service. He was a sharp shooter in the National Guard, earning the prestigious Minute Man Award. He is the 2015 State horseshoe champ and is a World Champion Horseshoe pitcher. He had quite the competitive spirit which was evident in a Sunday game of Rook. Dad served faithfully in many callings. He loved roadshows, ward parties and singing in the choir.
Those looking forward to being reunited with him again are his wife Shirley; children, Wayne (Janet), Troy (Tammy), JaNae (Ron) Christensen, Brent (Tamara), Kent (Cammy), Janene Schiffman and Melanie (Brinton) Baggaley; 27 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; siblings, Renae Ormsby, Clela Nielsen, Verdin (Evelyn) and sister-in-law Judy. Rejoicing with him in a sweet reunion are his parents; brother Larry; sister Velma Loy; and brothers-in-law, Ed Ormsby and Otis Nielsen.
Funeral services will be held, Friday, November 20th, 11:00 a.m., at Kearns 14th Ward, 4232 West 5015 South. Viewings will be held Thursday, November 19th, 6-8:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and prior to services at the church, 9-10:30 a.m. Interment, Larkin Sunset Garden.

Hi Dad,

Today is one month since you passed away. I can imagine you are having a wonderful time catching up with everyone who passed before you. It's still hard to believe this is real. I had my first birthday without you here. Melanie had a wonderful video she sent to me of you playing Happy Birthday on your harmonica. I loved it! Please be with us through this Christmas season...we still need you!

Dad,

Happy Thanksgiving! You were in my thoughts all day. I enjoyed some razzle berry pie in your honor.I realized I missed out on spending your last earthly Thanksgiving with you...made me sad. As each holiday comes along, I will think of you and you will occupy a special place in my heart.

It's been a week today since we said our final earthly goodbye's. We tried our best to honor your life and I hope you loved the services. I am still amazed at how many people came to pay their respects. We've had such an outpouring of love, kindness, cards, food, and gifts from family and friends, far and near. The love and support from these wonderful people will certainly help us during our time of grief. I'm sure you can feel that love too. Some have shared treasured stories of the kind things you have done for them, acts of service we would otherwise be unaware of. You are so loved by so many people!

As a family, we watched a video of your graveside service for Thanksgiving. It really was so neat. I'm glad your last earthly ride was following along on your red tractor. It seemed so appropriate. Your casket looked so beautiful draped in the United States flag. I'm sure your heart swelled with pride as Tyler delivered the flag to mom. It was a sacred moment. I also loved the message delivered by the Mail Carriers Association.

I hope you laughed with me as I played horseshoes in the cemetery. I thought you would be proud when I made a ringer. Your grave site is in such a beautiful spot with the mountains in view. Though it is only a spot for your earthly remains, it is a place your family can gather to reminisce and celebrate your life. I know it was always important to you to visit the graves of your loved ones. Thank you for teaching me to respect my ancestors who have gone on before.

As I think of all of my blessings, you are on the top of my list. You have always given freely of your time to bless me and my family. Thank you for that gift of love!

I worked with Vance for several years at the Kearns Post Office. I remember all the fun he brought to the post office. He would write a "Night Before Christmas" poem every year featuring fellow employees and events in the poem and read it at the annual Christmas party. Every once in a while, he'd go out in the middle of the workroom floor and do a jig. Then he retired, but I still saw him as I became his mailman for a couple of years, and then just continued to bump into him until I moved into his stake in 2013. I loved seeing him at church functions. He was a good man whom I was glad to know as a friend.

Best Grandpa!

Thank you Dad for accepting me into your family all those years ago. You were the only father I have ever knew. You accepted me into your family like one of your own children. Most father-in-laws don't do that. All of your teasing has made me a stronger person. Your council and example mean the world to me.

You taught all of us how to work hard and to strive for excellence in our lives. Thank you for the service that you gave to all of your children. You were always there for us when we needed you.

Thank you for the laughter that was always around us. You made us laugh with your personality and for just being you. Thanks for the memories of keyboard playing, banjo playing, harmonica playing, horeshoe throwing and tabernacle building hunts. I will never again be woken up in the morning by your keyboard playing. The hunts will never be the same without you. These memories are what I treasure most.

You were a "one of a kind" Dad, which makes you special to each of us. We each have our own special memories of you that we can reflect back on and remember the good times.

You have left a legacy to your family that is indescribable.

We love you to heaven and back Dad. You can never be replaced. Sleep in peace until we meet again. LOVE YOU TONS!!!

Thank you Dad for accepting me in your family. You were the only father I ever knew. Some father-in-laws don't accept their daughter-in-laws very well, but that was not the case here. You made me feel like I was a part of the family from the beginning. Your council and love meant everything to me. You were one of a kind.

You were an awesome example to me and my family. You will be missed so much. Life will never be the same without you. Your keyboard, harmonica, and banjo playing hunts will never be forgotten. Memories made with you will be cherished forever.

Thank you for being you, for showing us how to laugh, how to have a good time, and how we should stick together as a family.

You taught us to work hard and never give up on the things we want in life. Thank you for your service to us as your children. You were always there for us when we needed you.

We love you more than you will ever know. Until we meet again POPS. LOVE YOU

I have wonderful memories of visiting my grandfather and grandmother (Eugene and Shirley Pearson), who lived next door to the Bodily's for years. I remember Bro. Bodily and his wife would let us come into their backyard and jump on their trampoline with their grandchildren. We would have fun running between the two backyards with the many grandchildren between the 2 families. Thank you for the wonderful memories!

Dear Shirley and family Horseshoes will not be the same with him not there. There never was a better competitor. I may have beaten him when he had an off day,but when the state championships came around he was always at the top of his game .It was truly a pleasure competing with him and calling him a friend.
Our sympathy is with all of your family.

Dear Shirley and family,

It isn't going to be as challenging for me when we get back to pitching horseshoes in the spring, because Vance won't be there. I might have beat him once or twice when he happened to have a bad day, but when the state championships or any important tournaments came around, I wasn't able to win. He was true friend and a pleasure to be with, whatever the occasion.

please accept our sympathy,

I miss you so much Grandpa! I feel lucky that I was able to spend so much time with you--nearly everyday of my childhood. I loved living on the farm and spending many days by your side in tractors, golfcarts, and your truck.
My kids loved when you chased them, had water gun fights, and took them on golf cart rides--best grandpa ever!
I loved going hunting with you and staying in your camper. I loved early morning hikes to look for deer and how you set up targets and helped me learn to shoot. It was fun to ride in the back of your truck and carve our names in a tree. I'm glad I went camping on Taylor Mountain this year- I didn't realize it would be the last time you would be there. I'm also glad we played Rook one last time.
Thank you for giving me the most fun and memorable childhood: climbing cherry trees, jumping from the terrace to the trampoline (or sliding down the firemans pole), playing "horse", creating things in your workshop, drinking whiskey (aka pop), going on KFC and sherbet runs, driving clown motorcycles, grandkid sleepovers where we jumped on the bed while you played the banjo and more.
It will be hard to visit my parents- to drive down the dirt road and not wave to you, to not see you hard at work on your latest creation, to not have you come inside for a little visit. It makes me sick to imagine a world without you in it.
I hope you know how much we loved you, it was always apparent how much you loved us! I love you- God be with you till we meet again.

Shirley, Wayne, and all of the rest of the family. Was so glad
I got to visit with him on Tuesday the 10th, and the other
times I stopped by. Told him I was ready to compete with
him from 30ft and was looking forward to doing so next year.
He was a great pitcher and even a greater human being. Will
certainly be missed next year on the courts. Nancy and I
will be out of town the rest of the week and am so sorry we
cannot attend Friday.
Our love to all and am sure will see you all next year.

I cant tell you how much I love this man
he has always treated me like a family member. I remember haircuts as a young boy
fishing and hunting trips, church dances
he even financed my first motorcycle. I will never have a friend in my life as special as him and never will again, he was one of a kind. my happiest memories
as a young man was spending time with him at their farm, he taught me the love of farming and raising animals, my first horses were kept their and I raised my first pig and cow there so when I left salt lake and moved to fillmore I bought
some property so I could continue my passion for farming that he taught me. I
will miss him and love him forever. I also send all my love and condolences to Shirley and all his children and family
he was truly one of a kind.

Dad,

I'm a pretty lucky girl to have a dad like you. I'm already missing you more than you will ever know. I keep looking for you to be out on your golf cart or tinkering around on the farm. Not many girls get a chance to see their daddy nearly every day of their life, like I did.I will miss you coming in to use the phone and having a bite to eat once in awhile. I'll even miss your muddy foot prints sometimes tracked across my floor. I'll miss watching you out my front window as you worked. You were never idle. I bet you didn't know how often I watched you and admired you.

Thanks for providing a wonderful and unique childhood for me. I used to think all dad's were like you, but as I grew, I realized it was not so. You are also a wonderful grandpa to my kids and grand kids. We are left with so many wonderful memories.

Thank you for teaching me to be responsible and how to work hard and be resourceful. Dad, I'm trying to learn from you to not let the world discourage me from being who I want to be.

Thank you for giving us some time to care for you and say our good-byes. I know it was hard, and you suffered greatly. I thought you would live to be 100, however, I've realized that you squeezed at least 100 years into the 81 you were given.

Please say hello to my grandparents that I miss so much. Please watch over our family. Help us to keep loving and caring for each other. Please help my heart to heal. I look forward to the day when you will welcome me to our heavenly home.

I love you so much, and I know you love me too!

Love, JaNae (Fruit)

My Uncle Vance is such a wonderful person. I remember all of the get togethers we had at the farm. We used to go to Liberty Park and have a get together there also when we would come to Utah. He was such a fun person to be around. You will be missed by all. I look forward to the day we shall all have another great family gathering in Heaven. May the Lord give your wonderful family strength to carry on and feel His loving arms around them during this time of separation. We love you.
