JANET SMITH Obituary

Janet R Smith 1931 ~ 2009 HEBER VALLEY, UT- Janet R Smith, age 77, our loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away comfortable with peace and dignity after struggling many years with congestive heart failure on September 4, 2009, at her home.Born November 15, 1931, in Livermore Falls, Maine and raised in Waltham, Massachusetts. Married Francis E. Smith December 29, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, and lived in Southern California until moving to Utah in 1979. Jan served her country in the U.S Air Force during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 as an Airman 3rd Class. Most of her working career was as a corporate secretary and draftsman for her husband's civil engineering and land surveying firms. Jan believed strongly in hard work, individual effort and responsibility, and community service. She tried to impart these values to her children, grandchildren, and to those around her. She was a special lady who was always joyous, open, honest, generous, straight talking (including colorful expletives) --she never held back. Some of her favorite pastimes include being a home body, cooking, gardening, people, cats, cats, and cats: domestic cats, bobcats, and African Lions--remember Gus the Lion?; and Dogs, dogs, dogs; skiing at Snowbird and volunteering at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen --Salt Lake City, Utah. She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Francis Smith; two sons: Jason Smith and Rick Smith; and four grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in the name of Janet Smith to the: Salt Lake Mission, PO Box 142, Salt Lake City, Utah 84110-0142 In Celebration of Jan's Life, an evening gathering will be held at Olpin-Hoopes Funeral Home, 288 North Main Street, Heber City from 5:00 -- 6:30 p.m. Following the gathering services will move to St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 100 West Center Street, Heber City, for a Memorial Service which will begin at 7:00 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinhoopes.com
