Jeff Whiteley Obituary

Jeff Whiteley

1954-2025

Sandy, Utah-Our beloved husband, father, brother, and dear friend Jeff Whiteley passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on September 25, 2025, while on a hike, surrounded by the beauty of nature and emerging fall colors. His untimely absence is felt acutely by those who know and love him.

Jeff was born in California in 1954 and spent his very early years in Idaho. He then moved with his family to Salt Lake City, where his love of music began to blossom. He learned to play the guitar and bass. He developed deep bonds with his fellow band members and many friends of his youth that have continued throughout his lifetime. Jeff was a gentle and truly kind soul who saw the best in people, always aware of those who he might help in some way. His prime motivation as he assumed the role of Highland High School president was to be a voice for the unseen.

He served a mission in Quebec, Canada, where those he worked with still remember his service and dedication. His love of the French language and culture continued throughout his life. He graduated from BYU in Humanities, where his writing skills emerged, as well as his love of art. He and his brother spent many happy days playing music in France, Switzerland and Germany. He later moved to Montreal, where he worked for the next several years in the early tech industry. His influence for good was felt by the group of youth he led there. They sang together in the streets of Montreal while Jeff accompanied them on his guitar. He was their example of a good man and was, in a sense, a father to the fatherless.

Jeff gave up his life in Montreal and moved back to Salt Lake to help with his father's real estate business. There he met his future wife Lori. They were initially drawn together by music, and they enjoyed 35 years together, making music and a wonderful life. They spent many happy times in France, Switzerland and Germany, singing and playing as a duo, appearing on French television and radio and later taking their acoustic ensemble Lark & Spur to perform at the Montreux, Brienz and Deauville Jazz festivals in 1997.

Jeff was an adoring father to his son. They spent countless hours together, often sharing Jeff's love of literature as he read favorite books with his son. They spent time together in Middle Earth, on the Mississippi River with Tom Sawyer and Huck, and on the streets of London, as brought to life by Charles Dickens. Joy abounded in the home, facilitated in no small part by Jeff's kind and loving nature.

His love of literature led him to write his own novel. He also translated a French novel into English. Jeff had the gift of words, whether spoken or written, and he shared his gifts with others. He also had a gift for teaching. He attained a Master's degree in French literature and was a sought-after French teacher at both BYU and Westminster College. He thrived in the classroom and was voted best teacher by students in the BYU French department.

Jeff continued to hone his skills on the guitar and Lark & Spur played many local events over the ensuing years. He founded Excellence in the Community in 2006. His desire was to showcase the artistry of Utah's finest local musicians in venues which would move them out of background music and onto professional stages, where their talents could be more fully appreciated. He worked tirelessly to achieve that goal and under his leadership, Excellence has produced more than 1430 concerts over nearly 20 years. He often came home invigorated after managing a concert, full of excitement from the positive influence music had on those that attended.

He will be sorely missed by the Excellence Community and by his wife and son, siblings and countless family members who will try to carry on his legacy of love, kindness and goodness. We feel blessed by knowing Jeff, who has enriched all our lives.

Jeff believed in the transformative power of beautiful music. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Jeff's memory by supporting Excellence in the Community and his vision for the Utah music community, Donations can be made at https://excellenceconcerts.org/donate.

A public celebration of his life will be organized in coming weeks. Information on that event will be available in the future on the Excellence website: https://excellenceconcerts.org

We visited during a jazz trumpet concert, and some some quebecois from 1974. He was warm, happy to see me in the crowd. We had so many great memories of Montreal.

I enjoyed the free Excellence Concerts and always remember Jeff asking, "How´d you like the price of the tickets?"
Lark and Spur were so talented and kept the audience spellbound. He will be sorely missed not only by family and friends, but by those of us that were so grateful to be able to enjoy high quality musicians at a price that wouldn´t break he bank. Much love and respect.

I knew Jeff from Highland High School. We didn't have any classes together, but I knew him from Jazz Band and kickn' it around the school. A group of our friends were returning from the "U" from some activity, and Jeff was in the back seat. I may have been driving a bit foolhardy, and someone asked Jeff if he thought he would make it home alive. Always the gentleman, Jeff stated that he had the utmost confidence in my driving abilities. Not even a snide remark. He has always impressed me as a kind gentle soul. Though our interactions were limited, I consider him a good friend, and a perston that has added to the robust happy memories of my youth. Godspeed my friend, Until we meet again.

I met Jeff only recently. During my all-too-brief exposure to him, he touched me deeply and made a profound impression on me. He was evidently a very special soul whom I was looking forward to knowing better and spending time with. His sudden disappearance is leaving a void that will not be filled. My wife, Paula, and I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to Lori and her loved ones.

Toni and I could hardly wait for each Tuesday so we caul go to the Galivan Center to listen to good music, dance, and have a visit with Jeff. With all that was going on he always found time to stop by to say hi and ask how we were doing. What a kind, friendly, and sincere person he was, and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.

At the last La Caille performance (Brazilian) I got a chance to thank Jeff for his work and tell him yes we donated.

I imagine he's organizing the heavenly choir now.

Jeff taught a gospel doctrine class some 35 years ago. He mixed classical literature with the gospel of Jesus Christ. He took it to a much higher and refined level. we both went our different ways from being bachelors but reconnected some 20 years ago when my wife and I began patronizing "excellence in the community.". In those 20 years I have witnessed that " excellence" underscored everything Jeff tried to do. He did his best and sought for excellence. I will miss seeing him neatly weekly at his events. I will miss his intellect. Most of all I will miss his unique friendship. Rest in peace my friend.

Mr. Whiteley was a ver caring and kind man who loved music of different genres and had a great connection with our community through the universal language of music. He had a big heart for dancing as well and loved seeing people express their feelings, traditions, and culture through dance. He greatly supported Latin American dancing and Mexican folk dancing. It was an honor to be called by him to perform with live mariachi music throughout the years. I will always remember him asking the public "What do you think about the price for this performance ?. Isn´t it the best price in town? ". He will forever live in our hearts. Until we meet again. Irma B. Hofer, Ballet las Americas de Utah.

I first met Jeff in 2017 when I was the director of the Holladay Arts Council and Excellence was managing our summer concert series. He was one of a kind! Always supporting musicians, asking the crowd how they liked the price of admission (free!), and dreaming big for improvement. We were especially proud that we had collaborated on a series of "drive-in" concerts outdoors in a parking lot the summer of 2020 when most live music was shut down. Jeff and I talked about books frequently during concerts over the years and he gave me a reference book citing the best 1,000 books to read before you die. His number of read books was a little higher than mine, but I´m sure he´s balancing a book and guitar in his hands even now. I will miss Jeff and his "gift of gab" - or however they say that in French.

I first met Jeff in 1977 when I was dating his twin brother. I went to their concerts in the Memorial Lounge at BYU. I went to their home in SLC on many occasions in the late 70´s, and I was always impressed with the focus on the arts that was encouraged by his parents. Their love of music, art, and literature influenced my own budding interest in high culture. During those college years, I also recall going to a French restaurant in Provo where Lark and Spur were performing. Not yet married, it was evident to me that Jeff and Lori had a very special connection to one another as they sang together in both English and French. They created a very romantic atmosphere for the diners. A decade or so later our paths crossed again at a Christmas party in American Fork, and I was excited to see Jeff and Lori again as a married couple still singing together. It was too long after that Jeff founded Excellence in the Community, and my husband Dan and I attended several concerts in SLC. I always left those events feeling elevated by the music and brief conversations with Jeff afterwards. I was always impressed by his kind and gentle demeanor. I´m sorry he left this mortal world so soon, but I know he´ll be singing with the choirs of heavenly angels. I want to express my deepest sympathies to his wife Lori and their family and friends. Jeff´s passing leaves us grieving a great man.

Jeff and I connected shortly after my mission in our home Ward in an Elders Quorum Presidency. W enjoyed making visits together but as much as that, I enjoyed his company. I still have to read Middlemarch Jeff! Jeff and Lori were kind enough to play at our wedding dinner and set the tone for everything else. I loved Jeff's enthusiasm for life and specifically Excellence in the Community and really the Arts in whatever the form. Your talents will be used at the next stop brother.

All of us here at the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo were so saddened to hear of Jeff's passing. He is responsible for bringing the Excellence in the Community concerts, including his own band Lark & Spur, to the citizens of Utah County. These free concerts, that are a gift to the Utah County community, are amazing, and reflect Jeff's desire to share the magic of music with everyone. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live forever.

The Fuja Family

October 1, 2025

To the beloved family of Jeff Whiteley,
With aching hearts and profound reverence, the Fuja family extends its deepest condolences upon the passing of your beloved Jeff.
Founder of Excellence in the Community, he was more than a steward of sound-he was a gentle architect of healing, a quiet minister of joy, a conductor of grace. Through his vision, Utah was bathed in music that lifted weary spirits and gave wings to those walking through shadow. In the glow of every concert, in each note offered freely to all, we felt the warmth of his soul. In some of our family´s darkest hours, we found light-unexpected and perfect-in those melodic gatherings. We were greeted not just by music, but by Jeff himself, whose kindness and sincerity were as constant and comforting as the melodies he championed.
Now, perhaps, he has taken his place among the chorus of angels, adding his great heart to the eternal song. We can only hope that, in some celestial way, he might glimpse how deeply he blessed us-how his generosity shaped our lives and steadied us through sorrow. His absence will echo, but so too will the music he gave-resounding forever in our memory.
With love beyond words,
The Fuja Family

This is very hard. We fought as children from rival neighborhoods, became best friends in primary and on the same little league baseball team. We hiked, traveled together, played music and went on double dates. He introduced me to my wife. We exchanged books and stayed up all night talking about life, girls and the meaning of our existence! We spoke a view weeks ago about the state of things and our next projects. We wanted to get together for lunch but he had to go. He said he would call me back but never did.

I enjoyed working with Jeff Whiteley to organize two joint concert events with the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation and Excellence in the Community. His enthusiasm and determination helped us present young pianists performing for new audiences in venues that did not always offer classical piano concerts. He was a joy to work with as we planned every detail togther. We will greatly miss his presence in the arts scene of Salt Lake City.

I only met Jeff 8 years ago, but he always made me feel like we´ve known each other a lot longer than that. His testimony of the savior was genuine and powerful. He could fill a room with the spirit of God through his voice and music. To Jeff, Thanks for the Christlike example you were to me. You will be missed, but I´m sure your talents were needed elsewhere
