JoAnn Zaharias Obituary

JoAnn Roberts Zaharias 1942 ~ 2008 Our loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, JoAnn Roberts Zaharias, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 after a valiant battle with cancer. She was born November 28th, 1942 in Los Angeles, California to loving parents, William and Avenell Roberts. She attended NAU earning a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology. She married Jarry Zaharias on June 9th, 1962 and began building a family. She was always serving others in her family, work, and church. After raising an active family of four energetic children, she returned to school and completed a Masters Degree in Social Work. One of her great joys was serving others through her work as Director of the Victim's Counseling Unit of the Salt Lake County DA's Office. Her greatest joys and accomplishments in her life were her husband, children and grandchildren. She loved to spend as much time as she could with them all. JoAnn is survived by her loving husband, Jarry; her children, Andy (Heather) Marc, Nicole (Benjamin) Towers, Alyssa (Justin) Earl; her brother James Roberts (Terri); and numerous grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and father. The family would like to express thanks to Intermountain Homecare Hospice for their kind and loving care. Funeral services will be held at the Cottonwood Heights Stake Center, 6890 S. 2225 E. on Tues., May 20th at 11 a.m. Friends and family may call Mon. evening May 19th from 6-8 p.m. at Evans and Early Mortuary, 574 E. 100 S. and again Tues., May 20th from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Cottonwood Heights Stake Center. Dear Zaharias Family:
I am a prosecutor who worked with JoAnn for several years at the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office. JoAnn brought so much peace and comfort to the victims of horrendous crimes. She will truly be missed and the people of Salt Lake County have suffered a great loss with her passing. It no surprise to me that victims like Jenny Boone, whose case I prosecuted, have continued to not only remember her but also continue to sincerely appreciate everything she did for them and think of her in the highest regard for years after their cases have been processed in the criminal justice system. I can only hope that the kind of love, understanding and hope that JoAnn gave so freely to others will find you as you cope with these difficult times.

I am really sad to learn of her passing. I first met Joann when I was brought in to the DA's office, in hopes to prosecute my kidnapper/rapist. This was a very tough time for me, to face this guy in court who hurt me and threatened me years earlier. Joann was very good with me, she comforted me and was there for me. She would try and be there for me every time we had court, and explain things to me, and listen. She held my hand and gave me tissue, when i got upset in court. She was there for the sentencing in court, right there next to me and my mom. She was really there for me. I will always appreciate that and remember that. I have never forgotten about her, never will, and what she has done for me. She encouraged me to go back to counseling, she is gonna kick my butt! I better go! I don't think she ever forgot about me either, she listened to my story-held my hand in court for about 2 years, listened to me cry. She saw how disgusting and evil people can be, and helped me deal with it. She was a really good person. It has already been a few years since she worked with me, but I have never stopped thinking about her. I was just thinking of her yesterday as I was near the Courthouse and where her office was. She will be truly missed.

A loss that came much too soon! JoAnn was much too young to go and had so much more still to offer. JoAnn's mom Avenell and my mom Thelma were friends for over 60 years and left such a legacy and example of friendship. We knew and loved JoAnn because of this friendship. Bless you family! Love

I am so incredibly sorry to learn of the loss of JoAnn. She and I served on many committees together and she truly lead by example. I learned so much from her strength, knowledge and genuine drive to help all people. What a loss for the victim services community.

JoAnn, I will treasure the memories of all of the time we had the good fortune of working together. Your legacy will live on forever
