I attended school with Joe at Lincoln Junior and South High Schools where he starred in football, baseball, basketball, and track. Before he transferred to West High, Joe was chosen by the South High coaching staff as the outstanding athlete of the sophomore class. Joe had a reputation for being tough, but he was always friendly and cordial to me. It´s clear from the many tributes given to him that he was an important person in the lives of surviving family members and among his many adult friends. I am especially glad to learn of how good he was with kids later in his life and how caring he was with his grandchildren. The warm capacity to enjoy children and win their genuine affection tells us a lot about a man´s character. Rest in peace, Joe. I regret not getting to know you better when we were younger and especially later in life. My loss.

Sending so much love and support to you all.
Joe loves my little 2 year old son, Cedar. He was always trying to pretend throw a ball to him, or tease him, or make him giggle (which he could do pretty much on the spot any ole time). Cedar has a ball cap Joe brought him. He had no trouble at all one day giving it to Cedar, and I later found out it was a pretty special and valuable hat to Joe. I'm pretty sure I brought it back later that week, and Joe and Joan replaced it with a cute little red cap in toddler size promptly in reply. What great friends and neighbors Joe and Joan have been to us. We are lucky to have had his light be a part of our light these last many months. It has been a joy to be around him. So much love to his family in these hard days, months and years to follow. This is surely a loss so great.

It's really fun to read these comments. Obvious that Joe made an impression everywhere he went, especially with kids. Mine included. Cedar has asked for Joe a couple of times since his passing and it's hard to try to explain to him why we can't run over and see Aunt Joan and Joe right now. I will also miss Joe. He sure touched a tender part of my heart right from hello. He had a special light. I won't forget him. Very grateful I still have my Joan.
