John Franklin Allred

1941 ~ 2013
John Allred passed away on January 9, 2013 in the company of his wife, Susan. He died of causes incident to Alzheimer's disease. John traveled the journey of this disease with grace and dignity. He was born July 1, 1941 in Stockton, California to Frank D. Allred and Ann Greer Allred. He was a child when his family moved to Salt Lake City, which was his residence for the rest of his life.
John graduated from the University of Utah and the University Of Utah College Of Law. He served in the ROTC, and after law school served with the Army Judge Advocate General in Germany. He was honorably discharged as a captain. John then practiced with the Utah Attorney General and the Salt Lake County Attorney, before beginning a successful private practice that spanned more than 30 years. He also enjoyed managing his properties in the Tooele area.
John enjoyed skiing, was on the ski patrol, and was one of the first certified ski instructors in Utah. He also greatly enjoyed open wheel car racing, and was a member of the Sports Car Club of America. He graduated from the Bondurant and Sears Point racing schools, and loved speed on the track and yes, on the road.
In 1992 he married the love of his life, Susan Creager. They shared a love of nature and travel including the forests and wildlife in the Jackson Hole area and the beauty of the Oregon coast. While they were in Africa, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. John always had his camera, and recorded much of his life through the lens. He also enjoyed weekend bicycle rides with his neighbor Dave. John enjoyed social events, including hosting Christmas parties, an annual neighborhood summer party, and impromptu dinners with neighbors.
John and Susan adopted Eli, a rescued white pit bull, in 1996. Eli was John's beloved companion, who traveled everywhere with him, including vacations and going to the office every day. Eli was later joined by Kayla, another white pit bull. Eli passed in 2008.
John is survived by his wife, Susan, and his sisters Edrie Bridenbaugh, Jean (Reed) Goddard, and nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is survived his brothers-in-law, Randy (Janine) Creager, David (Joanna) Creager, and Brian (Joelle) Creager. He is also survived by children of a prior marriage.
Deep gratitude to John's and Susan's neighbors, friends, and family who stepped forward and gave generously of their time, effort, and care to support John and Susan in so many ways during this journey. Many thanks also to John's caregivers while he was living at home. Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Silverado during his stay, including their most kind attention to his comfort in his final days and their care for Susan. A thank you also to the spouses of residents there for their many kindnesses.
John enjoyed supporting organizations that work to protect the wilderness, the environment, and animal welfare. In his memory, donations to Greenpeace (greenpeace.org), Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (suwa.org), or, yes, Susan's rescue group, CAWS - Community Animal Welfare Society (caws.org), which John supported in many ways, would be welcome and appreciated, as would be any gift to a charity of your choice.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
