John Laurence Benton, known lovingly to many as Larry, born in Salt Lake City Utah on April 4, 1941, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, at the age of 84 after a long valiant battle with COPD. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loyal friend, John leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.

Dad is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Susan Benton, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories, adventure, and love. He is also survived by his children Brad and Myndi, his brother Wayne, and his cherished grandchildren: Courtney, Benton, Jessica, Jaxon, and Jasen, and his two great grandchildren: Grayson and Ridge.

John was a man of deep integrity and generosity. He served his country honorably in the Vietnam War shortly after marrying Susan. Throughout his life, he remained the kind of man others could count on. John found joy in helping others get what they needed-often in simple, unannounced ways. His grandchildren quickly learned to be careful what they mentioned around him, as a casual comment about saving for something might soon result in a surprise delivery on their doorstep.

John worked tirelessly to provide for his family, building a career in the trucking industry. He found his niche first at Texaco and later at Roadway Express, where he earned multiple safety awards that he took great pride in. He was a proud member of Teamsters Local #222. His dedication and professionalism were hallmarks of a career that spanned decades.

Outside of work, Dad had a zest for life and a deep appreciation for the simple joys. He was a collector. He collected stamps and coins for years. He even started collections for his grandchildren. He loved camping with his family, a tradition that began when his children were young and was joyfully picked up again in later years. He also found great fun and camaraderie in four-wheeling with friends and family. A tech enthusiast long before it was common, Dad made a hobby of staying on the cutting edge, owning more computers in his lifetime than many people own phones.

An avid reader, Dad could often be found in his favorite chair with a book in hand, losing himself in stories. In his final years, what brought him the greatest happiness was time spent with those he loved-playing cards, sharing a meal, or simply visiting and enjoying good company. He was a man who lived with heart, humor, and humility. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his sister Laura Jean, brother Glen, his parents: John D. Benton, and Marjorie Johns and his dear Aunt Cornelia.

A short graveside service will be held at the Murray Cemetery on Friday, June 27th at 11:00 am, 5490 S Vine St, Murray, UT 84107. In lieu of flowers, take a moment to reach out to a loved one, share a story, or lend a helping hand-just as John would have. -
