John Hawkes Obituary

John Douglas Hawkes "Gone Teaching" Our beloved husband and father, 69, returned home to his Heavenly Father Jan. 30, 2008 after a dignified fight with Parkinson's disease. He was born on December 18, 1938 to John B. and Laura Hawkes in Ogden, UT. He had the privilege of growing up in the mission field with his parents and siblings as they served several missions for the LDS church. He graduated from Olympus High School; completed military basic training at Fort Ord, CA; served an LDS mission in Southern Australia; and graduated from BYU with his Masters degree in Educational Psychology and Religion. John and his sweetheart, Kae, were sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple December 18, 1970. He owned and operated Hawkes Publishing and Liahona Publishing for 45 years. He enjoyed writing and took great pleasure in authoring over 20 books. Some of which include: Book of Mormon Digest, 30 Reasons to go on a Mission, Are Mormons Really Christians?, and Keys to Successful Dating. John has been a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served faithfully in many callings, including scouting, bishopric, stake high council and teaching. He was a devoted father and enjoyed spending time with his family. Our fondest memories are picnics up Millcreek Canyon and summer vacations at Bear Lake. John is survived by his loving wife, Kae; and their six children, Ann (Mike) Bingham, Nephi Hawkes, Sarah (Chris) Cox, Larene (Jeremy) Young, Ruth (Mat) Greensides, and Joseph Hawkes. There are presently 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters and brother, Joyce Metcalf, Lauralee Hunsaker, and David Hawkes. He was preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Laura M. Hawkes; also his wife's mother, Norine M. Robinson. The funeral services will be held Monday, February 4, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Millcreek Stake Center, 4220 South Jeannine Dr. (450 E.) There will be a viewing on Sunday, February 3, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 S. State Street, Murray, and also on Monday 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. John was my first publisher. I worked with John for several years in publishing and marketing my book on public speaking. John saw potential in my manuscript and was a great editor, lpublisher, mentor, advisor, and friend. I am grateful for John and his effort to build a great publishing company.

Dear Kae and Family,
We were so sad to hear of your loss and know of the heart ache that comes when you lose someone so dear! At this time we are so thankful for the understanding of the Gospel which gives us peace, knowing we will be with our loved ones once again. We know he is in a better place, what comfort that brings. Ours prays are with you at this time. It makes us ponder on "Family", and the importance of having strong family ties that helps us get through this trial in life.

Dear Hawkes Family,
My name is Peggy (Neel) Perkins. I am the second daughter of Robert Neel. Your father and my father worked in the East Millcreek Stake Printing Dept. My father started a printing business in our garage called Family Press.
I have early memories of our fathers diligently working late into the night on many church publications. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time, but I can assure you that my father was there to greet his good friend on the other side. With deepest sympathies for your loss,
Peggy Perkins
