After a brave and hard fought battle with Alzheimer's John Phillip Monsen of North Salt Lake passed away in his home on April 14, 2013 surrounded by his devoted care giving wife Violet, loving family, and beloved pets.
He was born on June 28, 1938, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, to Sheldon and Inez Monsen, and was the youngest of their three sons. As a youth he enjoyed helping his parents at the family home and businesses, participating in sports, and attending school dances. He became active in the scouting program at an early age, ultimately achieved an Eagle Scout award, and remained active in the scouting program. After graduating Sanpete High School he married his high school sweetheart Paula in 1957, and together had six children, before divorcing in 1978. John earned an Associate's Degree from Snow College and continued his education at Utah State University. In 1979 he married his loving life partner Violet Soliz, and together they had one daughter. He enjoyed a fulfilling career as a civil engineer with the Utah Department of Transportation. He was an ever-dutiful and organized worker and enjoyed additional employment thru the years at Lewis Brother Stages, North Salt Lake City Parks, and as a Crossing Guard for Orchard Elementary. He was associated with the local youth sports programs. He enjoyed working with his hands and was constantly remodeling and improving his home and property. He was the all knowledgeable and reliable handyman for family and neighbors. His hobbies and past time included organization/planning (list making), listening to music, word puzzles, cards, camping, outdoor activities, and well planned family speeches.
John is survived by his loving wife Violet Soliz-Monsen, his seven children: Cathie (Chad) Lewis; Bobbie (Gary Atkins) Woodward; John Scott (Beckie) Monsen; Brenda Monsen; Mark (Natalie) Monsen; Kaylene (Todd) Michels; and Bethanie (Johnathan) Ford. Monsen; sister-in-law Lauretta Monsen and Brenda's partner Don Curtis.
The family would like to extend gratitude to Caregivers Support Network, Utah Hospice Specialists, and our fabulous neighbors who we view as family. A heartfelt, special thank you to Dr. Anne Pendo, Dean Starmer, Olona Price, and Nancy Bennett.

Cathy and Bobbie, I don't know if you remember me or not but I have fond memories of playing at your house jumping on the big inner tube. Your dad served with my dad in the bishopric of the Granger 9th ward. I have been living in the Orchard 10th ward with your dad for the past 5 years and hadn't realized who he was until he passed away. My condolences to you and your family at this time, my he rest in peace.
