Joseph Nilson Obituary
A Funeral Service will be held for Joseph A. Nilson, 78, of Florence, at 2:00pm Monday July 23, 2012 at the Florence Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,2705 Munsel Lake Road, Florence. A visitation will be held at the church from 12 noon to 2:00pm. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
Joe was born October 18, 1933 at Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Joseph L. and Marguerite (Earnshaw) Nilson. He passed away peacefully July 17, 2012 at Coos Bay. Joe was raised and educated in Salt Lake City. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was married to Carol Jean Simmons March 21, 1953 at his mother's home in Salt Lake.
After the war he worked as a Flight Test Operations Manager during the development of the Minuteman Missiles and latter during the development of the B1 Bomber. They made their home in Lancaster, California for 29 years until retiring and moving to Florence, Oregon in 2004.
Joe was an active member of the Florence Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. Joe was a kind, humble man. He loved spending time with his family and friends and he loved the Lord and served him well. He was an excellent provider and the best husband in the world!
He is survived by: Wife Carol Jean Nilson, Florence, OR, Son Michael J. Nilson Afghanistan & Belize, Son Douglas S. Nilson & Alice Rush,Lynnwood, WA, Son Lawrence Ace & Susan Nilson, Reno, NV, Daughter Cynthia R. Sommer, Lexington, KY, 6 Grandchildren Kristine Nicole, Steven, Casey Michael, & Heather LeAnn, Robert Joseph Nilson, Bethany Ann Elliott
6 Great Grandchildren, Brother Gayle & Christina Nilson, Salt Lake City, UT, Sister Joyce Stewart, Salt Lake City, UT, Sister June Hoenicke, Salt Lake City, UT. He was preceded in death by 2 grandsons, Jarom Williams and Cory Ace Nilson.
