JOSEPH OLSEN Obituary

Joseph Mitchell Olsen, PhD Mobile, Alabama Joseph Mitchell Olsen, PhD, 66, passed away on April 17, 2010 of pancreatic cancer. He was born November 22, 1943, in Salt Lake City, UT to Maxwell Bernard Olsen, Sr. and Sarah Henderson Mitchell Olsen. He grew up in Sugar House, UT and attended South High School where he ran track. During his schooling at M.I.T. he took 2 1/2 years off to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Spanish speaking Spanish-American Mission, head quartered in San Antonio, Texas. On returning from his mission he completed his undergraduate degree at M.I.T., after which he entered the army's Officer Candidate School where he earned his commission of second Lieutenant. While stationed in Boston with the Army Corps of Engineers he met the love of his life, O'Linn, at a church function. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 12, 1969. After completing his army commitment as a Captain, he returned to Boston and M.I.T. to continue his graduate studies. He completed both a Master's degree and a PhD in Civil Engineering. In 1976, he accepted a job as an assistant professor at the University of Utah where he enjoyed 11 years of professional growth. In 1987, he accepted a position as professor and chairman of the Civil Engineering department at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, with the principle assignment of earning ABET accreditation for the department. The department was successfully accredited under his stewardship in 1991. He continued to serve as chairman of the department for 18 years, when he then stepped down, but continued to teach as a full professor until his death. Over the course of his tenure at South Alabama he greatly enjoyed working with administration, faculty, staff, and students alike. He was a member of the Order of the Engineer, a member of ASCE, and an avid Boston Red Sox fan. Throughout his life he served in and enjoyed many and varied callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including branch president, bishopric counselor, bishop, high councilor and member of the Stake Presidency. However, he most enjoyed teaching gospel doctrine and being an ordinance worker in the Jordan River Temple. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, O'Linn Lohmoelder Olsen; four children: Karen Rasmussen (Kendall) of Doha, Qatar; Meredith Ohran (Michael) of Orem, UT; Matthew Olsen (Emily Fullmer) of Raleigh, NC; Melissa Resch (Ned) of Ann Arbor, MI; 14 grandchildren: Jeremy Rasmussen (16), Marissa Ohran (13), Austin Rasmussen (13), Annika Ohran (10), Morgan Rasmussen (9), Connor Ohran (8), Rebekah Olsen (7), Eric Rasmussen (7), Kate Olsen (6), Bronson Ohran (5), Lucas Resch (2), Benjamin Olsen (2), Zander Ohran (2), and Baby Girl Resch, due in August; a brother, Maxwell B. Olsen, Jr. (Elma) of American Fork, UT; and 3 sisters, Louise O. Baird of Provo, UT, Sally Barfuss (Joe) of Midvale, UT, and Mary Anderson of South Jordan, UT. Funeral services were held in Mobile, AL. Interment will be Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at 11:00 AM at the Brigham City Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend. Not sure what to say?

August 29, 2010

Dear O'Linn & family,
I just learned about the passing of Joe through Teddie & Tony. So sorry and our prayers are with you. My husband & I were widower & widow at the time of our marriage and so have some idea of the adjustments and sadness you are experiencing. O'Linn, I remember in Cambridge when you and Joe were getting acquainted and deciding to get married. Am glad you and I were in the same lunch gathering in Salt Lake just a few years ago. Again, our prayers are with you.

Love,

Dear Olsen Family,
I was very saddened by the news about Joe. He was a great friend and confidant during our high school years, he taught me to love track, and it was wonderful to touch base with him a couple of years ago, to send and receive emails and visit on the phone for several months. I have always remembered his birthday (and will continue to do so) and think of him on that day with fondness in my heart.
He often wrote or spoke of his love for O'Linn and his family. Even as a teenager, his family was very important to him. I wish you peace and comfort at this time. He was a great man and accomplished all that he set out to do. Please accept my deep condolences.

O'Linn:

Your phone calls after the diagnosis and the morning Joe died were really devastating. We had a great time as roommates back in the mid-1960s, and I'll always remember your phone call, just after I'd left Boston to visit SLC, announcing your engagement. I still laugh every time I remember your Mom's reaction. Over the years, here in Boston, in Vermont, and especially as you both stayed with me while Joe finished up his thesis (you were always glued to the TV for the Red Sox games), and later, when I visited you in Utah, and more recently when you stayed with me in Belmont I always had the feeling of 'family' comfort. The fun we had when Bob King and I were your home teachers before you met Joe (you and the Livingston cousins -- the "Sydney Street Irregulars") I still remember with pleasure. I've told a number of people, Doug Braithwaite, our 2nd year roommate, the Plummers, the Bowens, the Giauques, etc., and all are stunned and saddened. I hope you can be comforted soon. I'll get in touch with you very shortly.

Much love,

Tony

Dear O'Linn, we were so sorry, so very sorry to hear of Joe's passing. We bonded with him while he was in Cambridge and especially during a non-stop drive that the three of us undertook from Boston to Salt Lake City. Joe was a genuinely good person, and the world will be the poorer for his loss.

Dear O'Linn and Family, we heard through Debbie and Larry Larsen about Joe. We are so sorry. Just thinking of you and your family brought back a flood of memories from Howey Drive. I talked to Sarah and she told me how to find Joe's obituary. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. God bless you always. Norm, Shauna Steen and Family, Sandy, Utah

Dear Olsen Family,
I had the honor of meeting Joe one month ago during a trip to the Univ. of South Alabama. During dinner he talked at great length about how proud he was of his family, his passion for Civil Engineering, and the Red Sox. I am so sorry to hear about his passing. He was a truly great man, father, and husband and I am grateful that we crossed paths.
My sincere sympathy,
Andy Whelton
