KATHERINE ALDER Obituary

Katherine Rasmussen Alder 1920 ~ 2011 Our beloved, lovely, kind and tender Katherine Alder passed away peacefully on May 12th 2011. Born on March 24th 1920 to Katherine and Darol Rasmussen, she was the oldest of five children, Darol (Thora), Robert (Zelma), Mervin (Verna), Ronald (Colleen). Katherine was born in Moroni, Utah and grew up in in Moroni and Ephraim, Utah. She attended Snow College where she was a leader in many student activities. After graduation she went to Utah State University where she graduated in 1942. Except for dishing up milkshakes at Shirley's Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim for 10¢/hour, her first job was teaching at the High School in Green River, Utah. Her specialty was home-economics and sewing but the war was on and she taught just about everything, including boys gym class. Her second year of teaching was at Tooele High School where again, she taught boys gym and other assorted subjects. Always a roamer, Kay next went to Los Angeles to work in a defense plant for the war effort. The war ended, and she returned to her parents home, then in Bountiful, Utah. Back home again she renewed a friendship that grew into a love affair with Jack Alder from Manti and Snow College days. They were married June 18, 1946. The happy, but poor couple, lived in student housing at the University of Utah where Jack was enrolled in civil engineering. After Jack graduated they settled in Salt Lake where they raised four children, Steve, Bruce, Ted and Sue. Kay was a joiner and a people person. She was a member of the JCC Aux, the Ladies Literary Club, a hiking group, a book club, the Assistance League, a ward study group, tennis friends, and a bridge club. She loved them all. She enjoyed LDS Church activities where she especially liked to work with young people and was a chaperone on several memorable trips to Disneyland. She also helped produce many "Road Shows". Kay was an eager traveler. She and Jack visited many cities in the U.S. with their friends from the national A.G.C. Later, when time and money allowed, they visited many exotic places in the world. Kay loved all family gatherings and looked forward to the "Ras" Reunion each year for over 50 years. She loved being with her nieces, nephews. She treasured time with her ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Katherine is survived by her husband Jack, children Steve (Sue Ann), Bruce (Coralie), Ted, and Susan (Greg). Memorial services will be held Monday, May16, 2011 at 12:00 noon at the Mon. Park 9th Ward building, 1565 South Foothill Dr., S.L.C. Friends may visit the family at the church Sunday evening from 6-8:00 p.m., or for an hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Salt Lake Community College Foundation, P.O. Box 30808, S.L.C., 84130.

Dear Jack and Family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of your beloved Kay’s passing, and am sorry I was unable to attend her memorial service. How lucky you were to have so many beautiful years together! I have many cherished memories of the happy times Lee and I spent with you and Kay in Rotary, especially Rotary safaries and the parties at your ranch in Peoa. Her smile and happiness were contagious, and you and she were always the perfect hosts. Thanks for your kindness and generosity throughout the years. I feel fortunate to have been among your many friends.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family in the difficult days ahead as you cope with the loss of Kay’s earthly companionship. May cherished memories and the love and support of family and friends ease the burden of your sorrow and bring you comfort and peace.

With love and deepest sympathy,

Pat Griffiths

We were all so sorry to hear about Kays passing, she was such a memorable part of our lives as well. But with Kay's and Fayes recent passing I'm believing my mom's days are now more complete, I'm imagining a heavenly "Antique Hunt" or bridge game taking place.

All our Best, Love the Andersons

Kay and Jack,
Mom and dad (Jack & Mary May) treasured and respected your friendship through the many groups you both enjoyed. They loved the hospitality and times that were spent when they were invited to Oakley. I feel fortunate to have also experienced knowing both of you and spending time at Oakley. Kay was certainly a lady with wisdom and class. Take care Jack. Blessings to your family.
