Lari Downs Obituary

Lari Peck Downs 1956 ~ 2006 Lari Peck Downs returned to her Heavenly Father after a courageous battle with cancer on January 25, 2006. Lari was a wonderful mother of six children and the wife of Drew L. Downs. She was born to Tony and Janice Peck in Lehi, Utah on March 18, 1956. Lari was a graduate of Lehi High School where she was very active in athletics and cheerleading. She attended Utah Technical College and was employed at the LDS hospital as an X-ray technician for thirty years. Lari married Drew on July 6, 1979 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was a wonderful mother whose life revolved around her children, watching them play sports and supporting them in all activities. Each day was lived for them. She was a sister unlike any other. Her advice was comforting and her love unmeasured. She was a daughter that respected and loved her parents and family deeply. She was also a wonderful friend in the truest sense. Lari touched so many lives and we will be forever grateful for the privilege of knowing her. She served in many church callings throughout her life. Her passion was genealogy, where she spent countless hours researching her ancestors and assisting others in doing the same. She was the assistant director at the Family History Center in Lehi. Lari influenced everyone she met; she loved people. She is survived by her husband, Drew; daughter Dallas (Shered) Mullins; son Dixon; daughters Destry and Darci; son Dalton; daughter Dylan; parents Tony and Janice Peck; sisters Vicki Lee, Liz (Jeff) Anderson, and Megan Peck; brothers Cole (Rialeen) Peck and Clay (Teressa) Peck. She will be missed dearly and is loved by all. We love you Mom. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 30, 2006 at the Lehi North Stake Center, 2178 North 1200 East, Lehi, at 11:00 am. Friends and family may call Sunday evening from 6:00-8:30 p.m. and from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Monday, at the same location. Interment, Lehi City Cemetery.

I didn't get an opportunity to sign the guestbook during the service, but I wanted to express our sympathy for your loss. The service was exceptional, and I know how proud you are of the wonderful job your kids did during the most difficult of times.

Drew and Downs and Peck families:

I've been thinking about Lari alot. I did not come to the viewing or funeral. I have a knee problem and didn't think I'd be able to stand in line for very long and I knew there would be alot of people attending. I remember how fast she could run and how good she was at math. I remember being on the track team with her in jr. high. Now, I don't remember for sure but I believe she and I were on the shuttle relay team together. At the big Alpine Day track meet, our team not only won but set a new record for the shuttle relay. I remember a time when I took my mom's car to "Grand Central" in Orem after school one day. Lari and Marsha were with me. I don't remember exactly what we did, except for looking at record albums, but we were gone a little too long. When we got back to Lehi, I was too late to pick up my mom from work and she had to walk home. Boy, was I in trouble! I feel like we were all so blessed and fortunate to have grown up in "small-town" Lehi together with so many good kids. Lari was certainly one of those. You got a good one Drew. She was the total package. Our family appreciates so very much the kindness and generosity shown toward Ric and Angie and Alex and Meagan by your families. Cancer took some of our special ones didn't it. Meagan not long ago and Lari not far behind her. And of course our Alex also. Danny and I send our condolences and pray for God's blessings and comfort for you and yours.

I absolutely thought I was blessed to hear my son say that your family had influenced him to take seminary, he even mentioned mission :). I have since seen there are many people who have been blessed by knowing this wonderful lady.

Dalton and Dillon always laugh about how Lari would lovingly smack them on the head when they were not using manners during dinner at the Down’s home, I hope that she will be able to find the time to do this even more often from the Heavenly place she is now.

I can’t thank her enough for her influence and guidance.

My thoughts and prayers are with all.

Dear Vicki & family,

I wasn't able to sign the guest book at the viewing - I have never seen so many people! What a wonderful tribute to Lari and your whole family. Everyone that ever knew Lari loved her, that was very obvious. I have special memories of Lari growing up and watching your sisterhood. Please know that I am always here for you if you need me - just call!

Dear Downs family,

I'm so sorry to hear the loss of your wife and mother. I met Lari when I started going to church after my divorce in the year 2000.

Lari was the kindest most possitive person I had ever met. I always felt like a nobody, but she always made me feel like I was somebody and would come over to me and talk to me no matter where we would run into one another. What a great role model she was as a mother, friend and wife. I'll miss seeing her friendly face at school registration times and other occasions when I would see that friendly smile that always made me feel like I was a good friend. God bless you all in this sad, sad time in your lives. Lari was truly a special kindred spirit to all she came in contact with. What a wonderful world it would be if we all could live our lives as she did. My thoughts and my prayers go out to you all, and may God Bless you with strength to get through this, the hardest time in your lives. Amen.

I just wanted to let you know how nice your mother was to me when I met her. She came in to the junior high and we talked about different things and she was so nice and considerate of my feelings. She made me feel like she was my friend. She had Christ like qualities. I know she will be greatly missed! I am so sorry for your loss! My prayers and thoughts are with you!

Dear Janice and family,

I'm Joni Bigg's son. Her mother and my grandmother is Elva (Jean) Kipling. I just wanted to write and tell you how sorry I am over your loss. Apparently, Lari and I were the same age. This can not be easy for any of you. I spoke with Ardell on the phone when my family and I were in California for Christmas. Otherwise, I've not had any contact with anyone in Utah for a very long time. I'm sorry that I never got to know Lari. My Mother wrote me and told me that she had past away and sent me this site. Please know that I am full of empathy and hope the best for you all.

DEAR DREW AND KIDS, VIKI AND KIDS, LIZ,COLE,CLAY AND JANICE,

WHEN I THINK OF LARI I THINK OF ALL THE WAYS THAT SHE INSPIRED ME. SHE WAS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF QUIET SERVICE AND SHE WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR ANYONE IN NEED. BOTH SHE AND DREW HAVE BEEN THERE FOR OUR FAMILY AND WE CONSIDER THEIR FRIENDSHIP VERY DEAR. SHE WAS ALWAYS GENUINELY CONCERNED ABOUT OUR CHILDREN AND ASKED ABOUT EACH ONE WHEN EVER WE SAW HER. SHE LOVED EVERYONE UNCONDITIONALLY. I REMEMBER A TIME LAST SPRING WHEN SHE WAS STILL RECOVERING FROM A RECENT BREAST SURGERY AND WE WERE ATTENDING A VIEWING FOR A YOUNG FRIEND WHO HAD PASSED AWAY AND SHE WAS THERE FOR SUPPORT OF HER FREIND, THE BOY'S MOTHER, TAKING PICTURES AND I REMEMBER THINKING HOW TOUGH THAT MUST OF BEEN FOR HER PHYSICALLY TO HOLD UP A CAMERA ALL NIGHT LONG. YET SHE NEVER WINCED, SHE ONLY SMILED AND TURNED THE CONVERSATION AWAY FROM HERSELF LIKE SHE ALWAYS DID. SHE WAS SOMEONE I TRULY LOOKED UP TO AND SHE RAISED A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY OF THE SAME KIND OF PEOPLE. I PRAY THAT HER MEMORIES WILL STRENGTHEN YOU AT TIMES WHEN YOU MISS HER MOST AND THAT YOU WILL FEEL HER LOVING ARMS AROUND YOU ALWAYS. I KNOW THAT THE WORK SHE DID THROUGH GENEOLOGY WILL ALSO BRING AN ADDED MEASURE OF SPIRITUAL STRENGTH FROM THE OTHER SIDE.OUR LOVE TO YOU ALL.

Drew and family, Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your family. I have seen several people diagnosed with various medical problems from colds to cancer but few like Lari and Drew rise above the illness and bless others while they are suffering. What a class act your wife and mother is.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sundwall

Dear Drew and all your children and Janice and Tony, When I was out driving after I found out that I wasn't going to have Lari to go for walks at Thanksgiving Point this spring, or go on our daily errands, or talk to on the phone as we do our morning "chores", or have genealogy field trips, or go to the Temple and a million other things, I thought the flag should by at half mast and it should be a crime to smile. Lari aced every test in this earth school. There wasn't a service project she wasn't involved with. Once she bought a whole bolt of white flannel and made diapers for who knows what country, made dolls, quilts, emergency kits . . . She took every "wayward" soul in her arms and showed them the Savior's love. She saved my life when I moved here and took me under her wing and has kept me there ever since. I love her so much and can't wait to see her in "just a minute"! Life is so short. Lari has blessed my life beyond what I can express. Lari found her authentic voice and truly had the Savior's image engraven in her countenance. She lived to show us all how to live. Thank you Lari for your wonderful life lessons. Your eternal Sister, Ruth Thatcher-Tyson

Drew, Kids, Tony, Janice, and family. You'll never know what a great friend Lari was to me. She got me through some pretty tough times. What a TRUE friend she was! She always knew how to bring the best out in everyone. She loved life and knew how to have fun. I heard a saying that "When someone becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure." I will always treasure the friendship I had with Lari.

Lari, thankyou for being there when I needed you. Love ya, Jacki

But, our tears are the tears of saddnest over losing such a beautiful and special young woman. Our prayers and love are with all of you.

Drew Downs Family, Peck Family and Dearest Friend Niki Hunter,

Knowing the loss of Mother, Sister and Friends are familiar to me my heart is filled with understanding.

My Sister Donna, left a family of five small children (1978), however, each have experienced their angel Mother's continued love.

I am blessed to have been friends with Lari and enjoyed many hours of conversation ... I admire her devotion, testimony, compassion, talents, and help with genealogy. One time when she was helping with genealogy, Lari found a history of my Father's Grandfather who's name sake was dropped (Marnna) and his Grandmother's maiden name (Vance) taken after divorce, that means generations of family going by Vance instead of the given name Marnna ... this opened up the heavens to work for ancestors,it changed the already written book of Vance history records. Thanks to Lari, for an eternal find; those who know her, realize the list goes on and on.

Please know my prayers and love are with all. Love Rose Vance

To the Peck and Downs Families -

I was sad to hear of the loss of Lari. I have really great memories of high school with her and Vicki. She was a great person to be around. I was so happy to see - since losing touch - that Lari has a testimony of the church and had worked so hard to help her ancestors become members also! She was a great person and has touched more lives than she will ever know!!!

When my Dad died, I found these words in a book and I read them everytime I found myself missing him. " I may not be rich, I may not have fame, but I know I will always be true. For I had in my life that sweet spirit you gave when I meerly touched shoulders with you." These same words came to my mind when I found out Lari passed away. I'm so glad I got the chance to know her. I love her and miss her. Rhett, Jordan, Alec and Quinton want you to know, if you ever need a hug, come on over. We love all of you,
