Leonard Reynolds Obituary

Leonard LaDell Reynolds, Jr.

03/21/1945-06/28/2021

Salt Lake City, Utah —It is with great sadness that the family of Leonard LaDell Reynolds, Jr., announce his passing on Monday, June 28, 2021. Len is dearly loved and will be sorely missed.

Leonard (Len) was born in Salt Lake City on March 21,1945, to Vivian Drage Reynolds and Leonard LaDell Reynolds, Sr.

Len graduated from Olympus High School in 1963 and enjoyed playing drums for the high school jazz band. He had a great love for his church and served in the Great Lakes Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Upon his return he married his high school sweetheart, Cheri Smith. Together they had four children of whom they are very proud. He attended the University of Utah and earned a degree in Political Science in 1973. After graduating from the U, Len started Trey, Inc., a full service laundry and dry cleaning business with four stores in Sugar House and Bountiful, Utah. He then found his true passion working in the life insurance industry where he earned his CLU designation. Len established a successful life, annuity and disability insurance brokerage firm named Ascensus Insurance Services with 350 + employees and offices throughout the United States. His four children, as well as a son in-law and daughter in-law, followed him into the business and were privileged to work with him for many years. Len enjoyed a successful and distinguished career which earned him the highest honor in the insurance brokerage industry, The Douglas Mooers Award for Excellence, presented by the National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies; a great honor for Len and his family. Len later sold Ascensus to BISYS, leaving an unparalleled legacy. After several years in a leadership position with BISYS, he purchased Sentry West Insurance Services (SWIS) to return to a small, successful, family-run company.

Len also loved our local arts and was privileged to serve on the board of the Utah Shakespeare Festival for several years where he made lifelong friendships.

Len's greatest joys were his children and grandchildren. He delighted in being with them, and he loved cooking for them and entertaining them at home and at Sage Hill. His grandchildren could do no wrong. He will always be remembered for the twinkle in his eye, his sense of humor, and his quiet way of making everything okay.

Leonard will be lovingly remembered by his former spouse, Dr. Cheri S. Reynolds; his children and their spouses, Trey (Andrea), Greg (Michelle), Rob (Madi), and Emily LaTour (Dennis); grandchildren, Libby Reynolds, Tate Reynolds, Megan Reynolds Jensen (Drew), Mallory Reynolds, Sam Reynolds, Madi Reynolds, Sadie Reynolds, Cole LaTour, Bradley LaTour, Beckham LaTour, Lauryn Reynolds, Macy Reynolds, and Marley Reynolds, as well as cherished extended family members and loyal friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and his only sibling, Ronald D. Reynolds.

In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a contribution to the Utah Shakespeare Festival or to your favorite local arts charity.

To the Reynolds Family: My heart goes out to you all at the loss of Len. Cheri thank you for supporting Len’s decision years ago to serve in the Great Lakes Mission. He baptized my parents and sister in January 1965 in the Royal Oak Ward, and later baptized me too in Terre Haute Branch while several of his Michigan converts were in Indiana to visit him. He was such a successful young missionary. My husband was baptized later in Detroit and we married as BYU students in Manti Temple. Our five children and all our grands and greats were raised in the Church because of Elder Reynolds. Missionary service on both sides of the veil number in dozens of years. Please tell your grandchildren their Grandpa bore a fervent testimony of Jesus Christ - to the convincing of many, and for which my own family owes everything.
