Maevonne Moench Obituary

Maevonne Rees Moench 1913 ~ 2004  On January 9, 2004, after 90 extraordinary years, Maevonne Rees Moench closed her eyes for the last time and in death joined her beloved husband Louis, a reunion on which she had her heart set for the past five years since their parting. Maevonne entered life on March 29, 1913. School teacher parents Thomas Matthew Rees and Rebecca Ann Angell Rees and six siblings Ellis, Merle, Fern Winnie, Matt and Genevieve helped her chart her life's course. Valedictorian of her Granite High School class, she went on to graduate from the University of Utah and became a teacher. Hers was the good fortune in mid-life to build her dream home where watching the play of light and shadow on the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountains delighted her every day of her 49 years there. She considered her children Lynette (Sterling) Perkes, Cheriel (Gordon) Jensen, Nelda Bishop, Louis Moench, Michelle (Len) Hawes, Malin Moench, Brian Moench, Melodie (Robert) Charles, and her 27 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren her many blessings. Some of our fondest memories are of her story telling -- fairy tales, fables, moral stories, and life stories of forefathers and foremothers she venerated. She illustrated her stories with pen and ink, water colors, oils, and larger-than-life paper mache' masks and handsewn colorful costumery from a trunk that became a treasure trove. From paper, cloth and clay she sculpted angels, demons, fairies, flowers, toys, animals, human-size dolls, and Santa Clause. She created children's stories for television, church road shows, entertainment for pediatric hospitals, and musical productions and generated floats for the Days of '47 Parades. She saw to it that every kid in the neighborhood had a chance to shine. She illustrated medical books and journal articles authored by her physician husband with cartoon portrayals of the mechanism of a migraine or the dynamics of a depression. Nothing mattered more to her than Christian compassion for people in need. CARE packages, boxes of oranges and apples dropped on doorsteps, sleeping bags for third world orphanages, and Job Corps boys around the Thanksgiving dinner table were common events. Many a missionary was able to serve as a result of her largesse. She reminded us daily of her good fortune to have married a most wonderful partner. We are deeply thankful for her angel neighbors and for the kind caretakers at Garden Terrace. We wish her Godspeed in whatever project the Lord has in store, designing mountains and flowers, she hopes. Please join us in remembering her at a viewing on Friday, January 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive, or on Saturday, January 17, 10:45 to 11:45 preceding the 12 noon funeral service at Valley View Tenth Ward, 20th East and 39th South.

As our family visited with our mother (Beth) in the Primrose wing at Garden Terrace, we were priviledge to meet and interact with Maevonne. She was truly a delightful lady that we looked forward to seeing each day. We also know that she was a favorite with the Nurses, Aides and other visitors. We miss not seeing her and feeling her special spirit. God bless her and her family, from the Clifford Hansen Family.
