Mary Langan Obituary

1943 ~ 2016
Her name was Mary Michael, not Mary. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 29, 1943 to Dominic and Louise Giaquinto and passed away on September 1, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She moved from Long Island, New York to Utah in 1968 and brought along her New York accent and the attitude that went with it. Both served her well in life. If you met her you didn't forget her, she made an impression. She and I (Tim) were married for 40 years and have four children, Helen Langan-Conger(Jared), Clare Eggett (Chris), Anne Tuckett (Mike) and Timothy Langan. They gave us six remarkable grandchildren: Jane, Dominic, Peter, McKenna, Luke and Oliver. She was their one and only "Nannie". They were the light of her life and she loved them completely. She is also survived by her brother Al and nieces Martina and Gabriella.
She had a way of connecting with people that was a gift. Sometimes she would give a compliment followed by a "but". It was always a truth followed by another truth that you didn't want to hear. We called that being "Mary Michaeled". It was her way of keeping things real and being authentic.
She was a woman of faith. She was a lifelong Roman Catholic. She counted many nuns and priests among her friends. They became part of our extended family. She had an encyclopedic memory when it came to the saints. Sometimes she quizzed us about them. "Do you know what saints day this is?" I usually didn't.
She was Italian down to her toes. She loved holidays and observed all the Italian traditions. She paid attention to details to make things special for her family. She spent weeks getting ready for the special occasion so that when the day came it would be perfect. It drove the rest of us (me) a little bit crazy sometimes but we loved her for it and it's one of the things we'll miss most.
She also loved living in Utah. She made many deep and lasting friendships with our neighbors in Bountiful. We are grateful to them for all their loving support during this time.
She was an original. There won't be another like her. Her great heart gave out far too soon, and ours are broken. Thank you to the staffs at Lakeview and University of Utah hospitals. They took a difficult situation and made it bearable. Her name was Mary Michael, she won't be forgotten.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 331 East South Temple. A vigil service will be held Friday, September 9, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Neil O'Donnell and Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South, where friends may call from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Committal, Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 4th Avenue and T Street.

Thinking of all of you! Losing a Mom is never easy! Losing a fantastic Mom is even tougher. I hope your happy memories of her sustain you in this tough time. You have my prayers.

Dear Tim,

I know we haven't known each other for very long, but I have to say that what I've learned from working with, must be a clear indicator that your wife had to be just as sweet and kind.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I wish you and your family all of the peace and care during this tough time. Hang in there and take care.

Sincerest regards,
Angela (from the U - IT Training Team)

Dear Tim and Family,

We are so sorry for your loss and we will also miss Mary Michael. It never occurred to us to call her Mary - she made it clear from the moment we first met in 1990 that her name was M A R Y M I C H A E L - one name, not two. We loved her authenticity and sincerity, but most of all her warmth and enthusiasm. Our four boys were roughly the same ages as Helen, Clare, Anne and Timmy. We got to know Mary Michael through lots of school and neighborhood activities. She was her children's biggest fan, but she also supported everyone on their side. May God comfort, bless you and strengthen you is our prayer.

My deepest sympathy to the Langan family. I first met this family in 1982 when I started working at UPS with Tim. Mary Michael is truly a remarkable woman and thought of others before herself. I grew to love this family and considered them part of mine, and always had a good time when we got together. She always made an impact on people and was always honest, even if you did not want to hear it. Tim, you are in my thoughts and prayers and if you ever need to talk, please give me a call.
Your friend always,

Stephan and Melissa

Mary Michael was a big part of our family because she watched over Rachel and Jake after school while I was at work. She made an impact on all of us. I so enjoyed her personality and force of nature. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Mary Michael knew who she was,
She now smiles her smile from up above,
Her grandkids were her jewels,
That she wore very proud.
A presence that she owned,
Her arm hold always tight,
There was never any question about her love for Family, faith and life.
She always held her own and still I must believe,
Don't try to slip a store brand in when fixing Italian anything!

Mary Michael every memory we have with you is full of love and laughter. You were an amazing person with such a kind heart. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time. We know they are remembering you with lots of stories and also heartache as they have lost someone who's presence could never be replaced. You will be greatly missed by so many people who were fortunate enough to have known you.

I grew up with one of the Daughters of this family and all of them became life long friends. Mary Michael was always a strong presence when she was around, you could not help but enjoy her unique character, her attitude and of course her accent. To this day, we still quote things she said years ago in our best rendition of her strong accent. She was a great Mother, to her Children, Grand Children and to most of her Children's friends as well. She will be missed sorely.

Dear Anne and Mike, we were so sorry to hear about you losing your sweet Mother. It's hard to understand why things like this happen. But we know God is here to help you with this tremendous loss and eventually help you with peace. You and your family have our deepest sympathy and will always be in our thoughts and prayers. We have made a donation to Carmel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Monastery in Mary Michael's name. We send you our love.

When I would run into Mary Michael, occasionally her and I would laugh about times when I was over at her house during high school years with Anne. She hated it because anytime I got excited I would scream. I was always excited. ;) She would express gratitude that I had, (for the most part) grown out of that. I love her! I loved how she was so engaged in her children and grand children's life.

I think I was "Mary Michaeled" more than once, not only by Mary Michael but by Helen. I was always very grateful. So she was a good teacher and role model for Helen and her siblings, in addition to being a wonderful mom. Her spirit will survive and flourish through her children and grandchildren. Michael Bassis

I love you so much, much more then you will ever know.
