Mary Smee Obituary

Mary Louise Smee peacefully passed away August 12, 2015, in Holladay, Utah, surrounded by love from members of her family.
Mary was born on May 2, 1930 in Oceanside, CA to Leslie Edward Bush and Lula Clark Bush. She grew up mainly in California and Texas, and moved to Salt Lake City in 1947. She graduated from South High School in 1948. On June 17, 1948, she married Delbert W. Atwood Jr. in the Salt Lake LDS temple. Later divorced. They brought three children into the world; Bill, Marty, and David. She married Frederick W. Smee on December 6, 1968. They were later sealed to one another in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 2003. This added three additional children to her life; Jim, Suzanne, and Don.
Throughout her life, Mary was known to be an avid baker and cook, genealogist, Hispanic art collector and crafter. Her cakes and gourmet meals were infamous among close friends and family, as was her love for knitting and sewing. She was close with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, often traveling great distances to attend high school and college graduations, and to celebrate other important family events.
Mary and Fred spent more than 20 years wintering in various places along the western coast of Mexico. It was there she became enamored with the Seri Indian culture and various aspects of Mexican culture, which she shared with her family throughout her life.
Mary is survived by her brother Ronald Bush (Linda); by her children William Atwood (Debbie), Martin Atwood (Lisa) and David Atwood (Debi), Suzanne Rockstead (Clifford), James Smee (Suzanne) and Donald Smee (Georgia); by 15 grandchildren; and by nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr., SLC, UT. The family will receive friends and guests prior to the service from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Interment will immediately follow the service at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

Even though we have lived in Canada since 1977, my four children (Angela, Heidi, Todd and Holly) and I have fond memories of Mary Lou and Fred whenever we would come to Utah to visit family every year. We tried to make an effort regularly to keep in touch, and our yearly Christmas letter to them hopefully endeared us to them as well. Thanks to Mary Lou, Fred, and her three boys Dave, Bill, & Marty, we have good memories also of them all growing up together. More happy memories were made with Bill when Jim & I lived in Germany and he was in the Armed Forces. I will never forget those special times Bill! Love you all, and know that as you mourn your mother's passing, she left an indelible print on not only yours, but other's lives. Love to all of you! Gloria Manning-Smee in Castlegar, B.C., Canada.

To Mary's Family,
George Smee and I, Beverly Blake of Charleston W.Va., would like to express our sympathy and special thoughts and memories we have of Mary. Our trip to Salt Lake city the year Fred passed away, gave us a special time with MARY. We experienced a road trip with her through Utah and enjoyed her company as she had many interesting stories about Fred and her life together. She was most pleasant to us and her hospitality was beyond measure. She was a super hostess and we'll always have fond memories of her. She was a joy to be around and will be sadly missed.
