Matthew Larson Obituary

Matthew Russell Larson

In Loving Memory

Salt Lake City, Utah-Matthew Russell Larson came into this world on a spring day, March 25th 1979, to Russell Larson and Debra Johnson. From the moment he was born, Matthew was a beautiful blessing to both parents. He was a responsible and caring brother. He enjoyed coaching his little sister's soccer team as a teenager, as well as getting into antics with his brother and enjoying mother nature together. At 12 years old, Matthew found a love of sailing. Matthew displayed an exceptional mind, a kind heart, and an unwavering determination. From a young age he loved music, a passion that nourished his soul and brought joy to those around him. His beautiful voice, sharp wit, and sense of humor could light up any room.

Matthew was enthusiastic about a wide variety of subjects; especially a respect for the environment, philanthropy. He had a love of travel and interacting with people from all parts of the globe. Matthew's passion for understanding the world and serving others led him to the University of Utah, where he graduated summa cum laude with degrees in Political Science and Anthropology-subjects that became lifelong passions he shared with his wife, Rebecca.

Matthew was adamant about dedicating his life to public service, even over the objections of his parents, who saw his potential in the business world. Matthew had a different path, he was resolute in his mission to make the world a better place. Matthew served, with great passion, at Utah's Workforce Services for 22 years, rising through the ranks quickly to become the youngest assistant director in their history.

Matthew tried to help everyone understand, and realize, their potential while upholding the rules of his public trust. Matthew served, with the deepest integrity and compassion, for his fellow citizens of Utah. Matthew found another family at Workforce Services. He cherished and loved his fellow-workers deeply. He brought his wonderful sense of humor and his ability to do hilarious impersonations to brighten their workday. He also brought his brilliance, passion, and leadership skills to help accomplish their goals.

Matt's passion for sailing was lifelong, he was a beloved member of the Great Salt Lake Marina sailing community. Matthew became an experienced sailor, enjoying sailing competitions and his time on the water. Matthew was looking forward to sailing trips with his wife, family and friends around Mexico and the Caribbean after his retirement.

Matthew's life sadly ended on April 19th, 2023 following cardiac arrest two days prior. In his final moments, he was surrounded by his loving wife and family. His family, friends, and community have been devastated by his sudden, too early departure from this world.

Matthew was a rare and beautiful gift to this world-a man who truly made a difference. His absence is immeasurable, but so is the love he leaves behind.

Matthew was preceded in death by his grandparents, Delmas and Fleda Larson, Rex and Herma Lee Johnson, and his life-long best friend, Brady Mitchell. Matthew is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca, daughter, Bella, parents, Russell (Kathleen) and Debra, siblings, M'Lisa (Chris), Angie (Kevin), Derrek (Jamie), Natalie (Benjamin), nephews and nieces, and a close-knit group of friends who were family in every sense of the word.

The first crane day of the year at the Great Salt Lake Marina has been named the Matt Larson Memorial Crane Day in honor of Matthew, who always volunteered to help his fellow boaters get their boats in and out of the water.
