Max Eggertsen Obituary

Max A. Eggertsen 1932 ~ 2009 Max Armand Eggertsen, age 77, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, January 23, 2009. Our husband, father and grandfather knew his time was short and made time to write his own obituary. This is what he wanted to share with all of us. I was born on a cold winter morning on January 14, 1932 in Provo, Utah to good, caring parents, Armand D. and Bee Halladay Eggertsen. I attended schools in Provo: Timpanogos and Franklin for my grade school education. I remember I always had good teachers who cared about me. I attended Dixon Jr. High and then went to Provo High my sophomore year. The coaches told me I was too little to play sports and to come out again my junior year. I didn't wait till next year and transferred to B.Y. High School. This proved to be a great decision for me as I received a good education and many advantages for athletics and other school activities. B.Y. High School prepared me for college and other needed development that gave me more opportunities in my life. I graduated from high school and entered Brigham Young University where I played baseball for four years. In August of 1953, I made one of my best decisions ever when I married Patricia Ferrell who has been a rock for our family and my lifelong love and partner. I graduated from BYU with a BA degree in business administration and was immediately drafted into the US Army. I must admit, I was a little lucky as the military was great for Pat and I. I was stationed in Orleone, just a short drive from Paris. We lived in our own apartment where Pat had a good job and I worked at Maison Fort in an engineering group. I played basketball in the winter and baseball all summer long, with a little work. We had the good fortune to travel all around Europe but we came home broke and with no jobs. In early 1957, I went to work for Conoco Oil Co. in Salt Lake City as a sales representative. While living in SLC we were married for time and all eternity and had our children sealed to us in the Salt Lake Temple. I have enjoyed my service in the wards we have lived in, especially coaching most of the youth teams and teaching youth classes. I worked in Salt Lake City, Provo, and then Houston, Texas as a division manager. In 1968, Pat and I decided we wanted to raise our children in Provo and I quit my job and started my own business in the petroleum industry. This turned out to be a good move for our family. The business became quite successful and provided us a good living. We sold the business in 1998 but I really never retired as we kept many properties to be managed. With a great family, great friends and many opportunities, I really have lived a wonderful life. I didn't know why I was chosen to live the life I have but I am grateful for every day. I am survived by my wife Patricia; our children, Erin (Dr. David) Boorman, Alayne (Tim) Mahoney, Teresa (Thomas) Cooke and Lee A. (Anne) Eggertsen; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild and sister Larita Juber. I was preceded in death by one sister, Peggy Crandall Broadhead. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ward Chapel, 3535 North 180 East. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 East Center, Provo and Wednesday, 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Interment will be in East Lawn Memorial Hills, 4800 North 650 East, Provo. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Utah County, 1060 East 150 North, Provo, Utah 84606. Condolences may be sent to [email protected]

(evening of Jan, 28, 2009)

Dear Pat, I was distressed to hear from Marbra about Mick's passing. I was caught up in celebrating my 75th birthday for two days and didn't check my e.mail until this evening. It has been good to see you those times recently, (after 40 years plus) and I look forward to our group of incredible gals getting together again soon. I was prompted to reminisce about all of the fun, crazy times we had runing around Provo--driving up and down Center St. and ending up at your house.
I just read Mick's obituary on line and was happy to learn that you are an Eternal family. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Love, Patty Greenwood (Pat Tanner)

Pat and family,

Your loss is also my loss.

Mick was a wonderful friend.

I knew him best on the golf course. The Wattses versus Mo and Mick will remain forever as one of my favorite memories. Win or lose, Mick was always fun to play with. He was very competitive and had an enormous will to win. His determination made the matches more meaningful to all of us.

I admired him for his work ethic and his success in business, and I admired him for his love of his family.

He has many, many friends and he will be missed, but not forgotten.

Whenever I go to Riverside I will pause to remember Mick---and then go play with his determination and spirit.

My love to all of you,

Joe Watts
