Mike Barnard Obituary

March 10, 1961 ~ November 15, 2014
When you were talking with Mike Barnard you felt like his best friend and the sun shone only on you. He always told the funniest joke and was the quickest to laugh. His open energy and warm smile allowed him to make friends and feel love everywhere he went.
Michael Allan Barnard was born March 10, 1961 and passed away November 15, 2014, due to a liver transplant and following complications. His last moments were spent with his family and cherished daughter Bailey at his side, tenderly kissing him and making him comfortable.
Mike was one of three busy brothers, born within four years of each other. His charm, charisma, and energy guaranteed everyone always wanted to be near him.
Mike was a great athlete and loved all sports, especially skiing. His brothers Jeff and Richard remember spending winters together at Brighton, flying off the highest ski jump, over and over. Five year old Mike would confidently wait in line watching the teenagers and adults attempt this feat. When his turn came, Oohs, ahhs, and then cheers would erupt from all corners of the resort as young Mike traveled faster and farther than anyone else.
Whether it was a pocket knife or a painting, Mike saw beauty where others couldn't. His last work as a picker took Mike all over the valley through yard sales and thrift stores, making his living and many friends along the way. He had a great eye for treasure and loved hunting for that special piece.
Mike's heaven was eating Grandma Mary's home cooking. He absolutely loved her cream gravy and biscuits, ribs and potatoes, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Mike's mother Lanny and wife Mary Pat learned to prepare these meals just like Grandma did and Mike let them know if it wasn't exact. It was worth it to them to see the huge grin on his face as he leaned back in satisfaction from his last piece of warm apple pie.
Mike was one of many people we all know and love that struggled daily with the disease of addiction. Everyone in Mike's life including his wife Mary Pat, daughter Bailey, Mom Lanny, Dad Jack, and brothers' Jeff and Richard tried to help him conquer this disease. They are his heroes, standing by his side through all times, never giving in to the disease and never giving up.
Mike succeeded in having several years of sobriety many times throughout his life. We enjoyed these times with him thoroughly and are very grateful for them.
Mike was encircled by cherished family during his last days. We will remember him this same way with a small service for immediate family. Our family feels everyone's prayers, thoughts, love and we thank you. Our family also wishes to thank the many care givers, therapists, doctors, friends, and facilities that cared for and supported Mike over the years.
We would love to see your pictures, videos, and read your memories of Mike. Please share them with us on Legacy.com and in Lieu of flowers please make donations to Odyssey House of Utah.
We'll be enjoying holiday meals soon, and we will miss Mike with every bite. His spirit lives on through each of us, and we promise to laugh quicker, tell more jokes, and enjoy the moment, just like he did. We love you Mike.

I was shocked to see Mike's obituary, I didn't realize he had been sick. I just wanted to let your family know that I have many, many fond memories of Mike and the rest of the family. You treated me like family too. Our experience living in New York City was one I often refer to. Mike made me laugh even through hard times. I remember watching him in the showroom deciding which shoes to buy for The Chalk Garden, he had an amazing talent when it came to fashion and what would sell. One time I came out of the house ready to go and he said to me " are you wearing that!?" it had taken me forever to get ready! We went back into the house and after seeing what he had to work with he pulled a blouse and skirt out of my closet and said "put this on". I'll have to admit he was right! He will truly be missed. Please accept my deepest condolences.

The first time I met Mike, we talked about music. Our tastes and genres were so similar that by the end of our conversation, I felt like I'd known him for years. You can always tell a lot about a person by the kind of music they listen to, and Mile liked the good classics. I can remember sending his daughter Bailey home with stacks of my vinyls for him to listen to, Good to know someone else would enjoy them, and impressed that Bailey knew some of the bands. I know he will be missed dearly by her. My love and prayers to Bailey, Mary Pat, and the rest of Mike's family. May they get some comfort in knowing he is in a safe place.

I was on 39th S on my way to see Mike on Saturday when my mom called and gave me the news. I was so sorry to hear about his passing and miss seeing him one more time. Since then I've had a flood of great memories from sitting on Lanny's trunk with our skis on as little kids to get a ride to the top of the elementary school hill, to Brighton, endless summers at the Tennis Club, dozens of sleepovers and staying out most of the night, playing golf and seeing each other over the holidays and Hebgen. Mike holds a special place in my life and I know he's reached a better place. I'm so sorry I can't be with the family this week to celebrate his life. Much love to Jack, Lanny, Jeff and Rich....John Preston

To the Barnard family I send my condolences. As you may remember, Mike was my best friend growing up as little boys until I moved to Washington D.C. when we were both 11. I have many fond memories of my youth running around with Mike and finding things to get us into trouble. Lot's of playing around on the rocks by the water tanks, riding his little Honda 50, shooting BB guns in the Oak bushes, and sleepovers. Great childhood memories. I am really sorry to hear of his struggles but pleased to read he continued to be a bright light for many throughout his short life. I am confident he is now in a better place and that you will all see him again.
