Norman Johnson Obituary

Norman Clyde Johnson 1940 ~ 2005 HEBER CITY / FLAGSTAFF - Norman Clyde Johnson, of Flagstaff for 35 years, died in his home on Tuesday, May 10th, 2005. He was 64. He was born on August 24th, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was raised in Heber City where he graduated from Wasatch High. He was married on November 28th, 1959 to Lynette Peterson. Their marriage was solemnized on the same date one year later in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. After attending college at the University of Utah where he majored in Business Management, he began his career in pharmaceutical sales in Tucson Arizona. Following his heart and his passion, Norm purchased Clark's Sporting Goods in Flagstaff in 1969 and soon after changed the name to The Village Sports Den. As Chairman of the Citizen's Committee to keep the Arizona Snow Bowl open, he was heavily involved in the ecological, political and environmental battles that ensued over the next four years. As the President of Northland Recreation, Norm submitted a comprehensive 10-year master plan to the United States Forest Service that included the construction of lodges, maintenance facilities, and five additional chair lifts. During the following eight years, he fought a legal battle that included nine appeals reaching the Secretary of Agriculture in Washington D.C. and ultimately prevailed. After selling the Arizona Snow Bowl, he was involved with many other real estate and development activities in the Flagstaff area including Circle G, Walnut Canyon, Walnut Ridge and Pine Canyon. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying scuba diving, kayaking, flying, riding motor cross and ATV, hiking, skiing, boating, and his life's passion, golf. He loved life, family and God. He is survived by his father, one brother and two sisters, his wife of 45 years, Lynette, three children, Lori Marick, Barry and Brad Johnson and 13 grandchildren. His mother and younger brother precede him in death. "Today the world cries and heaven rejoices". Funeral services will be held Mon., May 16, 2005 - 1 p.m. in the Heber LDS 1st Ward, 365 East 500 North, Heber City, Utah. Friends may call from 11:45 - 12:45 p.m. prior to the services at the LDS Church. Interment will be in the Heber City Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Olpin-Hoopes Funeral Home, Heber City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society at 2724 E. Lakin Dr., Ste. 9, Flagstaff AZ 86004.

Dear Aunt Net, Lori, Barry and Brad,

Words cannot begin to express the sadness or the sense of loss I feel at Norm's passing, and I can only imagine what you are going through. I can't begin to tell you how much he and your family has meant to me during my life. Growing up wasn't always easy; thank you for including me in your family during those very special summers, spending precious time together, all the great vacations, baseball games and fun times we've had. Uncle Norman was a great man, a great leader and always knew with confidence and certainty the way to go. He had the type of charisma that could've persuaded anyone to his side, without him ever saying a word. He was always smarter and faster than anyone else I ever knew and I will miss his quick stride and wit and ready smile for the rest of my life.

With Love and Deepest Sympathy,

Janet Paul
