Norman Scown Obituary

Norman DeMile Scown The sun went behind a cloud today, And the World lost a good man. 11/1/1925 ~ 7/13/2007 Norman D. Scown, (Champ), was born in Lehi, UT to Norman and Alta Fox Scown, as the oldest of seven brothers and sisters. He attended Lehi High School and in his senior year (1944) enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during World War II in the Pacific and saw action on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the war, Norm returned to Lehi and began working at the Salt Lake City Airport for United Airlines, there he met his future wife, Shirley Smith, who also worked for United. They were married in 1949. After a short time in Salt Lake City; they built their home in Lehi where they lived for 48 years. There they raised their three children Dave, Mike and Cathy. Norm retired from United Airlines after 41 years and he and Shirley began an active, fun-filled retirement. They enjoyed their family-built summer cabin at Scofield Reservoir and traveled much of the United States. They celebrated their 50th anniversary on a tour of the British Isles. But best of all, they loved their trailer time, camping many places throughout the western U.S. They were particularly fond of Mayflower County Park in Blythe, CA, where they spent time with so many special friends. In 1998 they moved from Lehi to a condo in Salt Lake City, that their son David remodeled for them, a home they loved. Norm was active for many years in the American Legion, Post #19 in Lehi as well as the United Airlines Retirees group in Salt Lake. Norman was the hardest working man his family has ever seen. He was fiercely independent and lived life on his terms. He had been so healthy his entire life that his death was a great shock to family and friends. He missed only six days sick in 41 years at United Airlines. He was a rock and his family will miss him. Norman is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley; sons, David D. and Michael S. Scown; daughter, Catherine Scown Christofferson; former daughter-in-law, Susan Sundstrom and grandson, Simon Russell Scown; brothers, LaMar Scown (LaRetta), Overland Park, KS; Paul Scown (Edith); sisters, Gloria Finch (Dennis), Elaine MacLean (John), Rosalie Seamons (Fred) and sister-in-law, Melba Scown (Vince). He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Vincent. A viewing will be held on Thursday Evening, July 19, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr. Also a viewing will be held on Fri. morning from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at Wing Mortuary, 118 E. Main, Lehi, Utah. Graveside services for Norm will be held on Fri. July 20, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Lehi City Cemetery, 1100 N. 400 E. Following this, a Celebration of Life will be held Fri. July 20th at the Old Farm Community Center, 601 East 4110 South, Salt Lake City, from 2 to 4 p.m. All who knew and loved him are invited. Our gratitude and many thanks to the wonderful doctors and staff at St. Marks Hospital who truly serve with their hearts.

Dear Shirley and family, I am so saddened to know that our good friend, elite gentleman at SRD, and devoted husband has moved on to his next adventure. My memories of Norm are his kindness to all of your TOPS friends, his tender way of escorting you as you received recognition each year at SRD, and the warm smile and hugs he gave so freely to all of us! Our candle of continuity just might flicker a bit this next SRD as you light it and Norm looks on from the other side! Please know I'm there for you, I'm as close as an email or the telephone. And for now lean on the boys and Cathy, let them be your rock! Love, Annette

Shirley,

I am so shocked and saddened by the news of Norm's passing. He has always been such a pleasure to be around. A strong but gentle man; and a man of few words, but meaningful ones when spoken. I will miss him very much. You know I’m here if there is anything I can do for you. Please stay in touch. I think I can speak for everyone when I say, we all care very much for you and want you to remain in our lives for years to come. Our thoughts are with you.

Love
